Advances in digitization and resource-sharing business models have created new opportunities for manufacturing companies, enhancing competitiveness and resilience. However, these benefits bring computational challenges in efficiently planning and scheduling shared resources. Therefore, there is a need for scalable and quick solutions for practical applications. Shared manufacturing systems share characteristics with parallel machine scheduling, allowing for the application of advancements from this domain. This research focuses on Multi-Agent Parallel Machine Scheduling (MAPMS) in shared manufacturing, specifically addressing scenarios involving two parallel machines and distinct agents managing exclusive, set of non-overlapping orders. The study introduces a novel multi-objective mixed integer programming (MIP) model for order scheduling across multiple facilities, accounting for sequence-dependent setup times between orders. It also proposes a new heuristic method designed for industrial use. Benchmark instances demonstrate the practicality of both the MIP model and heuristic, contributing valuable insights into MAPMS challenges in shared manufacturing environments. © 2025 The Authors.

The development of models that can cope with noisy input preferences is a critical topic in artificial intelligence methods for interactive preference elicitation. A Bayesian representation of the uncertainty in the user preference model can be used to successfully handle this, but there are large costs in terms of the processing time required to update the probabilistic model upon receiving the user’s answers, to compute the optimal recommendation and to select the next queries to ask;these costs limit the adoption of these techniques in real-time contexts. A Bayesian approach also requires one to assume a prior distribution over the set of user preference models. In this work, dealing with multi-criteria decision problems, we consider instead a more qualitative approach to preference uncertainty, focusing on the most plausible user preference models, and aim to generate a query strategy that enables us to find an alternative that is optimal in all of the most plausible preference models. We develop a non-Bayesian algorithmic method for recommendation and interactive elicitation that considers a large number of possible user models that are evaluated with respect to their degree of consistency of the input preferences. This suggests methods for generating queries that are reasonably fast to compute. Our test results demonstrate the viability of our approach, including in real-time contexts, with high accuracy in recommending the most preferred alternative for the user. © 2024, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Everyone now uses social media to communicate information and ideas, which has become a requirement for everyone. Social media posts can offend people or be helpful or educational for them. Memes are one type of media that is disseminated in this way through direct messages, videos, or photographs. A meme is an image or video that captures the opinions and sentiments of a particular group of people. Memes can be trolling or not, and they include an image and text that express an emotion. Most memes are unique to a particular linguistic group of people. The most frequent cause of this is different languages. Memes must be categorized since studying them can help us understand the interests of each user. As both are necessary for interpretation, the meme cannot be considered acceptable if we only gaze at the text or the image. In this article, we provided a method for categorizing memes in Telugu that considers both the meme’s text and visual features, classifies trolling and non-trolling memes, attempt to determine the emotion the meme conveys and categorizes the meme according to the domain it belongs to. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.

Physical fatigue refers to a state of exhaustion or reduced capacity for physical performance due to prolonged exertion, repetitive movements, or lack of rest. It is a multifaceted condition that can severely impact performance, especially in activities requiring sustained effort, precision, or concentration. In physical tasks, fatigue manifests as a decrease in muscle strength, coordination, and endurance, leading to diminished performance and an increased risk of injury. Detecting physical fatigue is crucial in a variety of domains: professional sports, collaborative robotics, construction, and more. This research introduces a novel framework for predicting fatigue during shoulder movements using data collected from wearable inertial measurement units and electromyography sensors. By integrating the Borg Scale, a subjective measure of perceived exertion, our approach uniquely combines objective sensor data with user-reported fatigue levels, creating a more holistic fatigue assessment model. The primary aim of this study is to develop a predictive model capable of accurately estimating fatigue, as measured by the Borg Scale. An investigation of the best machine learning algorithm for this task ensures that the chosen method provides the most reliable predictions. Furthermore, by systematically reducing the number of sensors and analyzing the impact on model performance, it is possible to find a minimal sensor configuration that maintains the model’s predictive power while reducing complexity and cost. The Ridge Regression model, after hyperparameter tuning, outperformed other models, achieving a mean absolute error of 2.417 in predicting fatigue. This preliminary study shows the potential of integrating data from different inertial and electromyography sensors for fatigue prediction in shoulder movements, with potential applications in occupational safety. © 2024 Copyright for this paper by its authors.

Air pollutant monitoring and its efficient visualisation can support accurately assessing the air quality and harmful emissions;and it can guide us towards potential mitigation strategies to reduce its impact on public health and our environment. This paper presents a case study of employing dataspaces and proposing an ontology for modelling mobility to address the challenges posed by the heterogeneity of data sources in environmental monitoring, as well as using machine learning for forecasting pollutants. We employ Linked data as a powerful paradigm for harmonising and interlinking diverse and publicly available environmental data with private company data to create a dataspace for environmental monitoring. By applying semantic technologies and ontological modelling to integrate heterogeneous data, our approach fosters data interoperability and facilitates enhanced data exploration and decision support. For decision support, we demonstrate the utility of integrated data for forecasting air pollutants with the help of models developed using machine learning. Finally, a spatio-temporal visualisation platform harnesses the power of semantic relationships and contextual enrichment to support data exploration. © 2024 Copyright for this paper by its authors. The agriculture sector is vital to a country's economic and productive development. With technological advancements, we can identify plant diseases in their early stages, similar to how human diseases are diagnosed, and avoid significant financial loss. For example, a new technique has been developed to detect diseases in maize crops, a widely used raw product in the food industry and precision agriculture. Furthermore, farmers ensure the fields do not remain wet for extended periods to prevent fungus infection. Currently, machine learning and deep learning approaches are being utilized, making agriculture one of the most researched topics in AI. This study proposes a novel framework for predicting maize plant disease using a fusion of multi-deep learning models. The proposed framework uses a four-stage pipeline for detecting disease in maize plants by fusion of Xception, DenseNet-121, and ensembling of Xception and DenseNet-121 models to achieve excellent results on the OSF drone image dataset, which consists of 1821 high-resolution images of maize plants taken from unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The accuracy of our proposed approach is 96.95%, which is highly effective, considering the challenges posed by drone images. © 2023 IEEE.

Our research in Natural Language Processing (NLP) aims to detect hate speech comments specifically targeted at the LGBTQ+ community within the YouTube platform shared task conducted by the LT-EDI workshop1. The dataset provided by the organizers exhibited a high degree of class imbalance, and to mitigate this, we employed NLPAUG, a data augmentation library. We employed several classification methods and reported the results using recall, precision, and F1-score metrics. The classification models discussed in this paper include a Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (BiLSTM) model trained with Word2Vec embeddings, a BiLSTM model trained with Twitter GloVe embeddings, transformer models such as BERT, DistilBERT, RoBERTa, and XLM-RoBERTa, all of which were trained and fine-tuned. The metaverse is a universal and immersive virtual world, which are components of cyber-physical-social systems (CPSS). The traditional centralized approach to building a metaverse poses risks to user privacy, security, and autonomy. A growing movement towards a decentralized metaverse, built on blockchain and distributed networks, has emerged as a response. This paper presents a conceptual framework for building a de-centralized metaverse emphasising security, user autonomy, and inclusivity within situation-aware CPSS. Drawing on literature from blockchain, virtual worlds, and decentralized systems, we explore the technical and regulatory challenges that must be addressed to create a more secure, autonomous, and inclusive virtual world. Our framework highlights the importance of community-driven governance and transparent data management for building a decentralized metaverse that empowers users and promotes collaboration. © 2023 IEEE.

The widespread adoption of electronic health records has generated a vast amount of patient-related data, mostly presented in the form of unstructured text, which could be used for document retrieval. However, querying these texts in full could present challenges due to their unstructured and lengthy nature, as they may contain noise or irrelevant terms that can interfere with the retrieval process. Recently, large language models (LLMs) have revolutionized natural language processing tasks. However, despite their promising capabilities, their use in the medical domain has raised concerns due to their lack of understanding, hallucinations, and reliance on outdated knowledge. To address these concerns, we evaluate a Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) approach that integrates medical knowledge graphs with LLMs to support query refinement in medical document retrieval tasks. Our initial findings from experiments using two benchmark TREC datasets demonstrate that knowledge graphs can effectively ground LLMs in the medical domain. © 2024 IEEE.

Our research aims to address the task of detecting homophobia and transphobia in social media code-mixed comments written in Spanish. Code-mixed text in social media often violates strict grammar rules and incorporates non-native scripts, posing challenges for identification. To tackle this problem, we perform pre-processing by removing unnecessary content and establishing a baseline for detecting homophobia and transphobia. Furthermore, we explore the effectiveness of various traditional machine-learning models with feature extraction and pre-trained transformer model techniques. Our best configurations achieve weighted F1 scores of 0.86 on the test set and 0.86 on the development set for Spanish, demonstrating promising results in detecting instances of homophobia and transphobia in code-mixed comments. © 2023 LTEDI 2023 - 3rd Workshop on Language Technology for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, associated with the 14th International Conference on Recent Advances in Natural Language Processing, RANLP 2023 - Proceedings.
