An automation control program based on LabVIEW is designed to measure thermal conductivity of phase change material (PCM). The program is composed of file storage function of all test data and calculation results, temperature-controlled with only one heating plate or both heating plates, NI-DAQ-based data acquisition system, and steady state judgment system. During the testing procedure, the setting temperature is transmitted to heat plates while real-time parameters are read to the computer by using the Modbus protocol. When the temperature reach to stable state determined by the program automatically, the thermal conductivity of PCM is measured. The development of this automatic control program can realize the automatic test of thermal conductivity, and obtain the variation of temperatures and heat fluxes to research the phase change process in the future.

When the backscattering method is adopted to test the concentration and the size of soot, it's very important to analyze the backscattering characteristics of soot to determine the optimal light source, detector and detection angle. In this paper, the backscattering characteristics of nonspherical soot particles swarm are investigated. The size and shape of soot particles are determined by microscopic measurement. According to the micrograph, both Ellipsoid model and generalized Chebyshev models are selected to imitate soot particles. With the Monte-Carlo method, a random oriented particles swarm is created, and backscattering relative intensity is calculated by T-matrix method with different parameters. A simple backscattering test system was established, in which the light source and detector are selected based on the calculation results. The numerical and experimental results show that the combination of the Monte- Carlo method and the T-matrix calculation can be successfully applied to simulate the backscattering of the nonspherical particles swarm, and the experimental system has higher backscattering intensity according to simulation result. It provides a reference for improving the measurement accuracy of particles size and concentration. © 2010 IEEE.

Coherent anti-stokes Raman spectroscopy (CARS) is introduced, and several existing CARS methods are discussed and compared. Application in vehicle research is attempted through necessary modification on the basis of classical CARS theory. Classical theoretical spectrum calculation model is still suitable for the new situation. The design of CARS setup, which provides solutions for not only exhaust gas analysis but also engine combustion evaluation, is put forward. As the typical probe molecule, N 2 is modeled for combustion evaluation while CO 2 is emphasized on exhaust gas analysis. For multi-species analysis, several advanced CARS methods are introduced and expanded setup design using dual-pump CARS is shown. Elementary analysis has demonstrated that CARS has the capabilities of combustion evaluation and exhaust gas analysis. Temperature measurement accuracy can be plusmn10 K or higher and spatial resolution can be 1 cm or higher according to the instrument performance. Despite of some drawbacks the setup we developed can be useful for vehicle detection.
