This paper considers a version of the control system structure for the oxidative pyrolysis process in the production of acetylene with the safety criterion taken into account. In the presented variant of the two-level process control system, the upper level ensures the safe process flow. It determines the settings of the controllers for the local control loops of the lower level with the help of the correction unit. In designing the controllers, the fuzzy logic is used. It is shown that due to this system, the critical values of variables determining technological safety of the process are not exceeded, which reduces the number of the emergency stops during the process. © 2022 IEEE.

Manual Control with Pursuit Displays: New Insights, New Models, New Issues

Mathematical control models are widely used in tuning manual control systems and understanding human performance. The most common model, the crossover model, is severely limited, however, in describing realistic human control behaviour in relevant control tasks as it is only valid for tracking with a compensatory display. This paper first discusses the state-of-the-art in modelling human control in tracking with pursuit displays. It is shown that, although both tasks seem very similar, the separate presentation of target and system output signals allows operators to adopt a huge variety in control strategies, which makes the development of a universal model for pursuit control a challenge. Two recent models are then described which can act as precursors to such a universal model. Third, system identification choices and issues are discussed for pursuit tracking tasks. Finally, it is argued that it is inevitable that time-varying rather than time-invariant methods are needed to properly describe human behaviour in the pursuit tracking task, as skilled operators will learn to characterize the probabilistic nature of the task, which cannot be captured in a single, linear, time-invariant model.

Robust PID Controller Design for Plants with Delay Using Similarity Theory

Novel robust PID controller tuning is designed for second-order processes with varying delay in terms of the similarity theory. Similarity numbers are provided to characterize class of dynamically similar control loops enabling to tune all the robust PID controller settings together with a measurement filter adjustment. The novelty of the paper consists in the controller gain and filter constant settings by means of dominant four-pole placement such that the quadruple of placed poles is simultaneously robust. In addition these settings are generalized due to plant's dynamics characteristics expressed by the similarity numbers that describe sets of dynamically similar plants considered stable. For proving the robust stability of the similar control loops an algorithm for the pseudospectral abscissa evaluation is applied. Finally an example of the stability proof is given. © 2018

A study to which extent of parameter setting the PID controller can be designed by means of dominant pole assignment for non-minimum-phase plant with delay is dealt with in the paper. Two options of the control loop are investigated, namely with and without the measurement filtering where the latter leads to a neutral time delay system which therefore has to satisfy the strong stability condition. The control loop is described in dimensionless quantities obtained by dimensional analysis. The influence of filtering on the loop dynamics is investigated particularly the effect of filter absence at all. This effect is demonstrated by the position of neutral root chain, i.e. how far from the origin lie the roots on a vertical line parallel to the imaginary axis of complex plane. To show boundaries of the dominant three-pole placement possibility in the control loop the trio of poles is placed repeatedly as long as the neutral root chain crosses the imaginary axis and the boundaries are mapped in the space of similarity numbers. © 2018

Optical imaging systems have a resolution limit due to the diffraction nature of light. Moreover, point spread function is distorted and blurred in the presence of both the wavefront aberrations, and the optical system. One way to overcome the diffraction limit is the amplitude or phase apodization of the optical system. However, as a rule, apodization allows not only reducing the size of the light spot, but also leads to the appearance of side lobes which degrade depicting properties. Thus, it is necessary to observe a compromise between reducing the size of the light spot and the side lobe level, which requires appropriate studies. In this paper we simulate the formation of spread functions from two closely spaced point light sources. We carried out a study of the change in the resolving power of a focusing system with its amplitude apodization by a quadratic function in the absence and with various aberrations. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

The spatial distribution of the focused high-order vortex Gauss-Laguerre beams is investigated subject to the change of the numerical aperture of the diffraction axicon and order of the vortex phase in the 3D model. Humans use signs, e.g., sentences in a spoken language, for communication and thought. Hence, symbol systems like language are crucial for our communication with other agents and adaptation to our real-world environment. The symbol systems we use in our human society adaptively and dynamically change over time. In the context of artificial intelligence (AI) and cognitive systems, the symbol grounding problem has been regarded as one of the central problems related to symbols. However, the symbol grounding problem was originally posed to connect symbolic AI and sensorimotor information and did not consider many interdisciplinary phenomena in human communication and dynamic symbol systems in our society, which semiotics considered. In this paper, we focus on the symbol emergence problem, addressing not only cognitive dynamics but also the dynamics of symbol systems in society, rather than the symbol grounding problem. We first introduce the notion of a symbol in semiotics from the humanities, to leave the very narrow idea of symbols in symbolic AI. Furthermore, over the years, it became more and more clear that symbol emergence has to be regarded as a multifaceted problem. Therefore, secondly, we review the history of the symbol emergence problem in different fields, including both biological and artificial systems, showing their mutual relations. We summarize the discussion and provide an integrative viewpoint and comprehensive overview of symbol emergence in cognitive systems. Additionally, we describe the challenges facing the creation of cognitive systems that can be part of symbol emergence systems. Copyright © 2018, The Authors. All rights reserved.

This paper presents a modification of reference-model adaptive control with a layered network of higher-order neural units (HONUs) as adaptive state-feedback controllers. The degree of freedom of such neural controller is deemed here as the number of applied HONUs of a customizable polynomial order and as of their individually customizable input vectors. Furthermore, the control scheme is enhanced because potentially occurring disturbances of controlled variable can result in that the sample-by-sample adapted controllers may tend to adaptively force the plant output to merely follow the reference model output because input data are affected by the error of disturbance, while the overall control loop dynamics would be more accurately adapted if no perturbation occurs or if the reference model is actuated with actually measured variables. Furthermore, the controller weight updates usually involve some step-delayed computations that might be in fact recalculated with the latest updated weights, so the controller learning can be improved.

Okra (Abelmoschus esculentus (L) Moench), is widely grown all over tropical, subtropical and warm temperature regions of the world. It is a popular crop in India due to its ease of cultivation and adaptability to varying moisture conditions. But the crop is prone to damage by various diseases caused by various insects, fungi, nematodes and viruses. The most common disease of okra is Yellow Vein Mosaic Virus (YVMV), spread by white fly (Bemisiatabaci). This paper presents an efficient technique to detect and classify the presence of YVMV disease in okra leaf with the joint use of image processing, K-means and Naive Bayesian classifier. The proposed technique is experimented on 79 standard diseased and non-diseased okra leaf images. The input leaf images are of four classes, namely Highly Susceptible (HS), Moderately Susceptible (MS), Tolerable (T) and Resistive (R), depending upon the severity of the YVMV infection. The proposed technique achieves 87% success rate using 10 features only.

The article describes problems in the area of engineering education in Russia. These problems were addressed by international TEMPUS project which involves several Russian universities, Association for engineering Education of Russia and four European universities (Tampere University of Technology, Claude Bernard University Lyon 1, Saarland University, Chemnitz University of Technology). This project's aim is the modernization of the Russian education system in accordance with international trends, best practices of European universities and account of Russia's cultural and educational traditions as well as needs of business and industry. The article analyses the experience of modernization of educational programs based on produced methodology. Currently obtained results of approbation of the methodology showed that the chosen modernization methods are an effective tool for solving the designated math-related problems in engineering education in Russian universities and, consequently, students will start to correspond more adequately to the labour market needs.
