In this work, for the first time, the valence band offset, ΔE v, between strained Si and strained Si1-yGey on relaxed Si1-xGex, has been measured using a combination of experiment and modeling. Such structures have been shown to offer large mobility enhancements for both electrons and holes, and knowledge of the band parameters is critical in order to optimize and predict device behavior. P-type metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) capacitors were fabricated on epitaxial structures containing strained Si1-yGey layers (0.4 1-xGex layers (0.2 v was extracted by fitting simulated results to the experimental capacitance-voltage (C-V) characteristics of the MOS capacitors. The impact of the valence band edge density of states, N v, on the extraction of ΔEv is shown. The effect of these band parameters on threshold voltage and subthreshold slope of a dual channel p-MOSFET is demonstrated using simulations.

Aneural-network-based approach for short-term load forecasting of electrical power is proposed. The principal comp.nent analysis (PCA) technique is used to reduce the original electric load variables to several characteristic variables. A single parameter dynamic search algorithm (SPDS) is employed to train the neural network. Since the training sample sets can be chosen before forecasting, the interference of the non-correlative samples for the forecasting can be avoided. The effectiveness and the feasibility of on line forecasting of the proposed method are examined using simulated experiments.

The image matching algorithm is the core of image matching aided navigation systems. Many algorithms have been proposed to improve the accuracy and real-time performance of image matching. Due to its capability of high-speed information processing and uncertainty information processing, Feature point based Artificial Neural Network image matching method has attracted considerable attention in recent years. Yet the result of Feature point based Artificial Neural Network image matching is affected greatly by many factors, such as object occlusions, lighting conditions and noises, especially the ANN algorithm being used, therefore it is important to find a robust feature point based ANN matching algorithm. This paper presents an image registration method based on the BP (Back Propagation) neural networks, where the input data used for registration are the locations of the points extracted from the images with the Directional Wavelet Transform method. To improve the performances of training of ANN for image matching, the genetic algorithm, a well-known global search algorithm, is introduced to BP algorithm to obtain the initial weights and biases. Experimental results showed that the enhanced ANN greatly improved the convergence speed and the matching accuracy for image matching.

This paper presents a new algorithm for the independent comp.nents analysis (ICA) problem based on an efficient entropy estimator. Like many previous methods, this algorithm directly minimizes the measure of departure from independence according to the estimated Kullback-Leibler divergence between the joint distribution and the product of the marginal distributions. We pair this approach with efficient entropy estimators from the statistics literature. In particular, the entropy estimator we use is consistent and exhibits rapid convergence. The algorithm based on this estimator is simple, comp.tationally efficient, intuitively appealing, and outperforms other well known algorithms. In addition, the estimator's relative insensitivity to outliers translates into superior performance by our ICA algorithm on outlier tests. We present favorable comp.risons to the Kernel ICA, FAST-ICA, JADE, and extended Infomax algorithms in extensive simulations. We also provide public domain source code for our algorithms.

An inevitable collision state for a robotic system can be defined as a state for which, no matter what the future trajectory followed by the system is, a collision with an obstacle eventually occurs. An inevitable collision state takes into account the dynamics of both the system and the obstacles, fixed or moving. The main contribution of this paper is to lay down and explore this novel concept (and the comp.nion concept of inevitable collision obstacle). Formal definitions of the inevitable collision states and obstacles are given. Properties fundamental for their characterization are established. This concept is very general, and can be useful both for navigation and motion planning purposes (for its own safety, a robotic system should never find itself in an inevitable collision state). To illustrate the interest of this concept, it is applied to a problem of safe motion planning for a robotic system subject to sensing constraints in a partially known environment (i.e. that may contain unexpected obstacles). In safe motion planning, the issue is to comp.te motions for which it is guaranteed that, no matter what happens at execution time, the robotic system never finds itself in a situation where there is no way for it to avoid collision with an unexpected obstacle.
