Characterizing the phase transitions of convex optimizations in recovering structured signals or data is of central importance in comp.essed sensing, machine learning and statistics. The phase transitions of many convex optimization signal recovery methods such as l_1 minimization and nuclear norm minimization are well understood through recent years' research. However, rigorously characterizing the phase transition of total variation (TV) minimization in recovering sparsegradient signal is still open. In this paper, we fully characterize the phase transition curve of the TV minimization. Our proof builds on Donoho, Johnstone and Montanari's conjectured phase transition curve for the TV approximate message passing algorithm (AMP), together with the linkage between the minmax Mean Square Error (MSE) of a denoising problem and the high-dimensional convex geometry for TV minimization.

Genome-wide association studies (GWASs) are widely used to investigate statistically significant associations between diseases and single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) to identify causal factors of diseases. In GWAS, statistical significance of more than one million SNPs have been recently assessed, but in many case, no associations are found because of the application of conservative multiple testing corrections, such as Bonferroni correction. While more sensitive methods, such as Westfall-Young permutation procedure (WY), would relate more SNPs with diseases, its extremely long comp.tational time has prohibited from the application of WY to GWAS. We introduce an algorithm to accelerate WY, named High-speed Westfall-Young permutation procedure (HWY). HWY utilizes three techniques to make WY comp.tationally practical. First, P-value calculations for SNPs that cannot affect the adjusted significance level are pruned. Second, a lookup table of P-values is used to avoid frequent duplicate calculations. Finally, comp.tations are parallelized using a GPGPU. HWY was 619 times faster than WY and more than 122 times faster than PLINK, a widely used GWAS software, and analyzed a dataset contained one million SNPs and one thousand individuals in approximately two hours. Re-analysis of existing GWAS datasets with HWY may uncover additional hidden SNP-trait associations. Copyright 2015 ACM.

The increasing Machine-Type Communications (MTC) devices will make the network congestion because enormous devices simultaneously perform the random access to obtain the uplink resources. The group paging mechanism may solve this issue via centralized control to disperse the devices. Machine-to-Machine (M2M) or machine-type communication technology standardized by ETSI/3GPP has recently gained a great deal of attention, and has been utilized in a variety of M2M applications, which commonly require real-time data reporting. This paper investigates the energy minimized scheduling problem for real-time reporting of data-critical M2M applications. Although many uplink scheduling algorithms have been proposed for different wireless mobile networks, they are mainly designed for human-to-human communication paradigms. This paper proves this energy minimized scheduling problem is NP-hard, and proposes a heuristic energy-efficient algorithm to address it. Our algorithm effectively schedules the transmissions of an M2M node in the same time slots, so that the active time of the M2M node can be minimized. The experiment results show that under limited bandwidth resource, our algorithm can maintain fairness and low data dropping ratios while achieving energy efficiency for a reasonable number of M2M nodes.

The sensitivity analysis of systems' characteristics to the shape of distributions is a very important task of reliability engineering of stochastic systems and networks. One of the earliest result concerning insensitivity of systems' characteristics to the shape of service time distribution was obtained in case of Erlang's formulas for loss queues with Poisson arrival stream, where steady-state distribution depends only on the mean service times. The paper deals with simple finite-source queueing models which comp.etely fail if a source area becomes empty. The inter-arrival or service times are assumed to be generally distributed. It is shown that the steady-state probabilities of the systems with a buffer or with generally distributed inter-arrival times are sensitive to the shape of distributions but simultaneously the waiting time distributions have a weak sensitivity. It was observed that the sensitivity vanishes if the comp.ete failure becomes a rare event. The results are comp.red with loss queues.

We consider several variations of the problems of covering a set of barriers (modeled as line segments) using sensors that can detect any intruder crossing any of the barriers. Sensors are initially located in the plane and they can relocate to the barriers. We assume that each sensor can detect any intruder in a circular area centered at the sensor. Given a set of barriers and a set of sensors located in the plane, we study three problems: the feasibility of barrier coverage, the problem of minimizing the largest relocation distance of a sensor (MinMax), and the problem of minimizing the sum of relocation distances of sensors (MinSum). When sensors are permitted to move to arbitrary positions on the barrier, the problems are shown to be NP-comp.ete. We also study the case when sensors use perpendicular movement to one of the barriers. We show that when the barriers are parallel, both the MinMax and MinSum problems can be solved in polynomial time. In contrast, we show that even the feasibility problem is NP-comp.ete if two perpendicular barriers are to be covered, even if the sensors are located at integer positions, and have only two possible sensing ranges. On the other hand, we give an O(n3/2) algorithm for a natural special case of this last problem. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

sci.ntific comp.ting applications are quickly adapting to leverage the massive parallelism of GPUs in large-scale clusters. However, the current hybrid programming models require application developers to explicitly manage the disjointed host and GPU memories, thus reducing both efficiency and productivity. Consequently, GPU-integrated MPI solutions, such as MPI-ACC and MVAPICH2-GPU, have been developed that provide unified programming interfaces and optimized implementations for end-to-end data communication among CPUs and GPUs. To date, however, there lacks an in-depth performance characterization of the new optimization spaces or the productivity impact of such GPU-integrated communication systems for sci.ntific applications. In this paper, we study the efficacy of GPU-integrated MPI on sci.ntific applications from domains such as epidemiology simulation and seismology modeling, and we discuss the lessons learned. We use MPI-ACC as an example implementation and demonstrate how the programmer can seamlessly choose between either the CPU or the GPU as the logical communication end point, depending on the application's comp.tational requirements. MPI-ACC also encourages programmers to explore novel application-specific optimizations, such as internode CPU-GPU communication with concurrent CPU-GPU comp.tations, which can improve the overall cluster utilization. Furthermore, MPI-ACC internally implements scalable memory management techniques, thereby decoupling the low-level memory optimizations from the applications and making them scalable and portable across several architectures. Experimental results from a state-of-the-art cluster with hundreds of GPUs show that the MPI-ACC - driven new application-specific optimizations can improve the performance of an epidemiology simulation by up to 61.6% and the performance of a seismology modeling application by up to 44%, when comp.red with traditional hybrid MPI+GPU implementations. The Hadoop MapReduce is the programming model of designing the scalable distributed comp.ting applications, that provides developers can attain automatic parallelization. However, most comp.ex manufacturing systems are arduous and restrictive to migrate to private clouds, due to the platform incomp.tible and tremendous comp.exity of system reconstruction. For increasing the efficiency of manufacturing systems with minimum efforts on modifying source codes, a high-performance framework is designed in this paper, called Multi-users-based Cloud-Adaptor Framework (MC-Framework), which provides the simple interface to users for fairly executing requested tasks worked with traditional standalone data analysis packages in MapReduce-based private cloud environments. Moreover, this framework focuses on multiuser workloads, but the default Hadoop scheduling scheme, i.e., FIFO, would increase delay under multiuser scenarios. Hence, a new scheduling mechanism, called Job-Sharing Scheduling, is designed to explore and fairly share the jobs to machines in the private cloud. Then, we prototype an experimental virtual-metrology module of a manufacturing system as a case study to verify and analysis the proposed MC-Framework. The results of our experiments indicate that our proposed framework enormously improved the time performance comp.red with the original package. © 2013 IEEE.
