In this presentation, the application of optical coherence tomography (OCT) to the prevention of myocardial infarction and early identification of osteoarthritis is discussed. Myocardial infarction or a heart attack is the leading cause of death worldwide. It results from an acute loss of blood flow to a region of the heart resulting in death to that heart tissue. Most heart attacks are caused by small, thin walled lipid filled plaques which can not be detected by currently available imaging technologies. This paper outlines some of the advances demonstrating the potential of OCT for the identification of high risk plaque. Osteoarthritis is a major cause of morbidity in the industrialized world. The hallmark of the disease is a degradation of articular cartilage. As new therapeutics have been shown to be effective in animal models, there effectiveness in humans remains unclear as there is no effective method for accurate monitoring changes in cartilage. In the second part of this manuscript, the effectiveness of OCT for monitoring articular cartilage is described.

This paper proposes an approach for processing speech from multiple microphones to enhance speech degraded by noise and reverberation. The approach is based on exploiting the features of the excitation source in speech production. In particular, the characteristics of voiced speech can be used to derive a coherently added signal from the linear prediction (LP) residuals of the degraded speech data from different microphones. A weight function is derived from the coherently added signal. For coherent addition the time-delay between a pair of microphones is estimated using the knowledge of the source information present in the LP residual. The enhanced speech is generated by exciting the time varying all-pole filter with the weighted LP residual.

The light scattering effect by rough surface of amorphous silicon was examined by several methods. We newly adopted Integral equation method developed by Fung et. al and comp.red with the first order approximation or high frequency approximation (geometric optics solution) of Kirchhoff method. The surface of amorphous silicon was assumed as Gaussian rough surface. The enhancement of light absorption by surface scattering can be predicted more accurately by the method suggested here.

In this paper, we propose an enhanced reverse link transmission procedure for 1×EV-DV which is an evolution of the cdma2000 1× for the support of circuit-switched voice and data as well as packet-switched high speed data on the same spectrum. The proposed scenario controls all mobile terminals separately. To dedicate control of each user, this scenario induces Rate Control (RC), MT Status Indication (MSI), and Rate Variation Indication (RVI). It supports a large variance of the data rate due to the estimation of the mobile location and speed. To verify the performance of the proposed scenario, we investigated portion of overshoot, goodput and delay. The results shows that the proposed scenario can utilize the reverse link resource efficiently by providing a rapid adaptation and accurate control of the data rate.

The optimal architecture of personal digital assistants (PDA) system for real-time 3D graphics was analyzed by simulating the 3D applications on the various Advanced RISC Machines (ARM) processor platforms. Simulation results show that for 256×256 screen resolution, even the performance of 200MHz StrongARM with 160MHz floating point unit (FPU) show only 1.78% of the requirement of full 3D pipeline. To realize the real-time 3D graphics on PDA, the optimal architecture must contain hardware acceleration engine with embedded DRAM as the rendering stage. In this architecture, MAC-enhanced ARM9 without FPU that is used as a host processor can provide the necessary geometry operations and we verified this architecture by the implementation of a PDA chip.

Based on this architecture, we provide the software block diagram involved in the packet data service and describe the functionality of each block. We first propose a simple and efficient multicast partitioning protocol, called Lookback protocol, for employment in an asynchronous WDM single optical star network. Network nodes use random access schemes to send reservation packets over a dedicated packet reservation channel. A central traffic scheduler is allocated to coordinate message transmissions. It executes the Lookback scheduling scheme in real time by searching (back into the input queue) for a candidate multicast message that can be received by all of the intended recipients. Such an approach effectively reduces the head-of-line blocking effects. Performance results conducted via simulations have shown that networks employing such scheduling mechanisms can exhibit superior network throughput levels and delay performances. To apply this mechanism to a wider range of networking environments, we further consider an interconnected dual-star architecture and propose the Modified Lookback (Mlookback) mechanism. By using a simple heuristic approach, the Mlookback scheme is able to successfully exploit the inter data channels and properly utilize the wavelength reuse property of the intra data channels. Performance results have demonstrated the merits of deploying the underlying Mlookback multicast algorithm in such a dual-star structure.
