In various application areas of pattern recognition, combining multiple classifiers is regarded as a new method for achieving a substantial gain in performance of systems. This paper discusses the properties of the diversity of classifiers and its applications. A method is presented for combining multiple classifiers based on the diversity. Fusion strategies are discussed for providing a basis for combining classifiers. These combination strategies are experimentally tested on online handwritten Chinese character recognition system and their effectiveness is considered.

A method to isolate the base pad from the intrinsic device structure for reducing the extrinsic base-collector capacitance of InP/InGaAs single heterojunction bipolar transistors(SHBTs) is reported, which uses a new base pad layout. The new layout is designed based on the lateral etching characteristics of an InGaAs collector layer with different crystal orientations. The new layout allows more effective and easier base pad isolation for InP-based HBTs, which have the emitter aligned to [011] or [011¯] directions, without excessive lateral or additional etching. The maximum fT and fmax, of the fabricated device with a 2 × 10 μm2 emitter size using the new layout were found to be 72 and 242 GHz, respectively.

Semantic query optimization (SQO) is comp.ratively a recent approach for the transformation of given query into equivalent alternative query using matching rules in order to select an optimal query based on the costs of executing alternative queries. The key aspect of the algorithm proposed here is that previous proposed SQO techniques can be considered equally in the uniform cost model, with which optimization opportunities will not be missed. At the same time, the authors used the implication closure to guarantee that any matched rule will not be lost. The authors implemented their algorithm for the optimization of decomp.sed sub-query in local database in Multi-Database Integrator (MDBI), which is a multidatabase project. The experimental results verity that this algorithm is effective in the process of SQO.

The traveling wave ring lasers with the direct calculation and measurement of the counter-mode suppression ratios were demonstrated by geometrically breaking reciprocity without using isolators. Intraoperative imaging using optical coherence tomography (OCT) was discussed. A sterilizeable hand-held surgical probe was developed and used with a portable OCT system for imaging. We study the problem of comp.ting classification rule sets from relational databases so that accurate predictions can be made on test data with missing attribute values. Traditional classifiers perform badly when test data are not as comp.ete as the training data because they tailor a training database too much. We introduce the concept of one rule set being more robust than another, that is, able to make more accurate predictions on test data with missing attribute values. We show that the optimal class association rule set is as robust as the comp.ete class association rule set. We then introduce the k-optimal rule set, which provides predictions exactly the same as the optimal class association rule set on test data with up to k missing attribute values. This leads to a hierarchy of k-optimal rule sets in which decreasing size corresponds to decreasing robustness, and they all more robust than a traditional classification rule set. We introduce two methods to find k-optimal rule sets, i.e. an optimal association rule mining approach and a heuristic approximate approach. We show experimentally that a k-optimal rule set generated by the optimal association rule mining approach performs better than that by the heuristic approximate approach and both rule sets perform significantly better than a typical classification rule set (C4.5Rules) on incomp.ete test data.

For the first time, the picosecond electric-pulse propagation characteristics of a few coplanar waveguide (CPW) comp.nents, including transmission lines, capacitive open and short terminations and a right-angle bend, have been successfully measured by mapping the time-dependent tangential near-electric-field distributions. The measurement was performed using a two-dimensional photoconductive (PC) near-field mapping system incorporating a recently developed novel PC electric-field probe, which could measure the separate picosecond orthogonal electric-field comp.nents with minimal loading effects. The resulting field-images mapped over the structural capacitive open termination and the short termination, showed previously unknown, and quite remarkable, transient picosecond electric-pulse reflection phenomena, which cannot be measured using conventional test inst.uments. In addition, the images showed that reflection-phenomenon itself required about 1 ps of propagation delay, and that the pulse-reflection from the capacitive open-termination required additional time delay matched to the length of the open-gap between the two slots of the CPW. We also found that at a CPW right-angle bend, comp.rable part of the energy of the guided signal leaks from the bend to the outer ground plane as radiating energy, and that two series-connected CPW discontinuities can remove the coupled-slotline mode generated at one of the discontinuities without using any additional comp.nent, such as an air-bridge.
