With the development of small satellites, housekeeping software is becoming more and more comp.ex. To meet the requirement of automatic flying and management of small satellites, the main functions, architecture and design of a certain small satellite are introduced. The principle of housekeeping software design, multi-task design, data communication, double comp.ter fault diagnosing and processing are described. Based on the powerful multi-task embedded operating system, the onboard comp.ter management, attitude management, data communication and fault tolerance system are integrated designed. The reliability is improved and the difficulty of automatic flying and management of small satellites is solved.

An approach of lip-movement features extraction and recognition based on chroma analysis are presented. By the lip chromatic filter, enhanced lip-movement images are obtained. The contours are described and feature parameters are extracted using deformable templates. Sequence images of lip-movement with the features are recognized by employing the HMM model. This method is quite robust to illumination and speaker independent, and it is fit for realistic surroundings under natural condition. It works out the problem of high resolution on object contours which deformable template needs, and makes itself more practicable. All lip-movement recognition experiments are based on visual information alone, the experimental set is limited within single Chinese vowels, and the accuracy rate of recognition gets up to 95.8%.

The features of signer-independent sign language are analyzed: (1) The convergence difficulty caused by mass data and noticeable distinctions between different people data. (2) The urgent need to extract common features from different people data. Aiming at these features, the SOFM/HMM model presented combines the powerful feature extraction performances of self-organizing feature maps (SOFM) with excellent temporal processing properties of hidden Markov models (HMM) within a novel scheme. Each SOFM eigenvector centroid is regarded as one of the comp.nents in the state of HMM which construct the state probability density function in terms of the weighted sum. The model parameters can be estimated through the Expectation-Maximization (EM) algorithm. When the proposed model is applied to signer-independent Chinese Sign Language (CSL) recognition with a vocabulary of 208 signs, 95.3% recognition rate is obtained in the registered test (Reg.) and 88.2% in the unregistered test (UnReg.). Experimental results show the SOFM/HMM system increases the recognition accuracy by 5% than conventional HMM one.

The exploding of information in data warehouses makes a great challenge to data warehouse research. How to increase query efficiency across web data warehouse plays an important role in data warehouse research. After analysis of several data warehouse implementation, a kind of hierarchy architecture of the web data warehouse is proposed, and an asynchronous iteration approach for query processing on web data warehouses is presented based on the hierarchy architecture of web data warehouse. In the asynchronous iteration approach, the pipelining parallel processing technique is exploited. During the processing of the queries on web data warehouses, all the nodes in difference layers of web data warehouse are executed in pipelining parallel manner so that the performance of the query processing is tremendously improved. The theoretical analysis shows that the asynchronous iteration approach is very efficiently for the query processing on web data warehouses.

Task scheduling is one of the crucial factors influencing the efficiency of a network of workstations (NOW). Fork-Join task graphs can represent many parallel structures. All of the existing algorithms which schedule Fork-Join task graphs ignore the problem that communications cannot be executed in parallel in non-fully-connected NOW, and some of algorithms with high efficiency even did not take the problem of how to save the processors into account. A new static task scheduling algorithm called TSA_FJ is proposed, which is based on task duplication and trying to synthetically take the problems of schedule length shortening, unparallel communications and processor saving into account. By randomly generating the task execution time and communication time, several Fork-Join task graphs are got and the scheduling results of TSA_FJ are comp.red with that of other algorithms for the generated task graphs. It shows that TSA_FJ algorithm has the shortest scheduling length and uses much less processors. It is much suitable to non-fully-connected NOW.

This paper discusses the development of software engineering class projects that have produced tools which have been used to enrich the educational experience of engineering students, the end users of the software. The projects have involved the creation, maintenance and evolution of software that helps the students determine their major, understand their learning style, develop a semester-by-semester plan of study, and formulate a class schedule each semester. The evolution of the structure of the software engineering project process is first presented. Having "internal" clients (i.e. those who are employees of the university) for projects that directly benefit engineering students is then comp.red to having "external" clients. The benefits gained by all stakeholders through these projects and data supporting the satisfaction levels of those stakeholders is presented. Finally, there is a discussion of funded research projects that have been spun off from of these projects, and the plans for the further educational software development through these grants.

The scheme was used to synchronize a picosecond mode-locked Nd:YVO4 laser as the slave and a femtosecond mode-locked Ti:Sapphire laser as the master osci.lator. All optical synchronization was achieved by modulating the intracavity losses of the slave laser with the pulse train of the master osci.lator.
