Actor-critic methods are widely used in offline reinforcement learning practice, but are not so well-understood theoretically. We propose a new offline actor-critic algorithm that naturally incorporates the pessimism principle, leading to several key advantages comp.red to the state of the art. The algorithm can operate when the Bellman evaluation operator is closed with respect to the action value function of the actor's policies;this is a more general setting than the low-rank MDP model. Despite the added generality, the procedure is comp.tationally tractable as it involves the solution of a sequence of second-order programs. We prove an upper bound on the suboptimality gap of the policy returned by the procedure that depends on the data coverage of any arbitrary, possibly data dependent comp.rator policy. The achievable guarantee is comp.emented with a minimax lower bound that is matching up to logarithmic factors. Copyright © 2021, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Modern 3D reconstruction algorithms offer a wide range of methods and tools for building a model of the surrounding space. Most of the approaches require the use of additional equipment, such as: lidars, laser scanners, stereo cameras. At best, a video camera with high-definition resolution is required. The cost of auxiliary equipment limits the availability of these methods. In addition, using 3D reconstruction approaches for the task of obtaining a video surveillance scene leads to the problem of determining the location of the camera in the resulting model. To avoid this problem, the spatial information obtaining by the surveillance cameras itself is suggested. Since the cameras using in surveillance are usually not a stereo pairs and in a worst scenario placed without overlapping, the suggested approach is to extract the spatial information during the calibration. This article presents an algorithm for obtaining a 3D model of the camera scene using the reference points acquired during calibration. © 2021 IEEE.

The experiment and evaluation of the performance of electronic information equipment require a reasonable quantitative evaluation method. In this paper, the theory of the gray correlation method is described and applied to the performance evaluation of electronic information equipment. This paper screens seven performance indicators of electronic information equipment, quantify the subjective assessments on the indicators by the AHP method, and assigns weights to the indicators. The gray correlation method is adopted to calculate and evaluate four sets of electronic information equipment performance data and derive the performance evaluation results of the equipment, proving the feasibility of the method in the field of electronic information equipment performance experiments and evaluations. © 2021 IEEE.

Background: Several researchers have reported their experiences in applying secondary studies in Software engineering (SE), however, there is a lack of studies discussing the distinction between Systematic Mappings (SMs) and Systematic Literature Reviews (SLRs). Aims: The objective of this paper is to present the results of a tertiary study conducted to collect and evaluate evidence to better understand similarities and differences between SLRs and SMs related to four aspects: Research question, search string, search strategy and quality assessment. Method: We identified 170 secondary studies that were reviewed to answer a set of Research Questions (RQ) related to the practical conduction of secondary studies in SE. Results: Results show that both SLRs and SMs have generic RQs, broad search strings, and adopt automatic search as search strategy. However, quality assessment has been more widely adopted in SLRs. Conclusions: In practice, only the quality assessment is conducted differently in SLRs and SMs.

Context: Despite being defined during the first phase of the Systematic Literature Review (SLR) process, the protocol is usually refined when other phases are performed. Several researchers have reported their experiences in applying SLRs in Software engineering (SE) however, there is still a lack of studies discussing the iterative nature of the protocol definition, especially how it should be perceived by researchers conducting SLRs. Objective: The main goal of this study is to perform a survey aiming to identify: (i) the perception of SE researchers related to protocol definition; (ii) the activities of the review process that typically lead to protocol refinements; and (iii) which protocol items are refined in those activities. Method: A survey was performed with 53 SE researchers. Results: Our results show that: (i) protocol definition and pilot test are the two activities that most lead to further protocol refinements; (ii) data extraction form is the most modified item. Besides that, this study confirmed the iterative nature of the protocol definition. Conclusions: An iterative pilot testcan facilitate refinements in the protocol.

Planning prblems are usually expressed by specifying which actions can be performed to obtain a given goal. In temporal planning problems, actions come with a time duration and can overlap in time, which noticeably increase the comp.exity of the reasoning process. Action-based temporal planning has been thoroughly studied from the comp.exity-theoretic point of view, and it has been proved to be EXPSPACE-comp.ete in its general formulation. Conversely, timeline-based planning problems are represented as a collection of variables whose time-varying behavior is governed by a set of temporal constraints, called synchronization rules. Timelines provide a unified framework to reason about planning and execution under uncertainty. Timeline-based systems are being successfully employed in real-world comp.ex tasks, but, in contrast to action-based planning, little is known on their comp.tational comp.exity and expressiveness. In particular, a comp.rison of the expressiveness of the action-and timeline-based formalisms is still missing. This paper contributes a first step in this direction by proving that timelines are expressive enough to capture action-based temporal planning, showing as a byproduct the EXPSPACE-comp.eteness of timeline-based planning with no temporal horizon and bounded temporal relations only.

The sensitivity analysis of systems' characteristics to the shape of distributions is a very important task of reliability engineering of stochastic systems and networks. One of the earliest result concerning insensitivity of systems' characteristics to the shape of service time distribution was obtained in case of Erlang's formulas for loss queues with Poisson arrival stream, where steady-state distribution depends only on the mean service times. The paper deals with simple finite-source queueing models which comp.etely fail if a source area becomes empty. The inter-arrival or service times are assumed to be generally distributed. It is shown that the steady-state probabilities of the systems with a buffer or with generally distributed inter-arrival times are sensitive to the shape of distributions but simultaneously the waiting time distributions have a weak sensitivity. It was observed that the sensitivity vanishes if the comp.ete failure becomes a rare event. The results are comp.red with loss queues.

Several key problems in machine learning, such as feature selection and active learning, can be formulated as submodular set function maximization. We present herein a novel algorithm for maximizing a submodular set function under a cardinality constraint - the algorithm is based on a cutting-plane method and is implemented as an iterative small-scale binary-integer linear programming procedure. It is well known that this problem is NP-hard, and the approximation factor achieved by the greedy algorithm is the theoretical limit for polynomial time. As for (non-polynomial time) exact algorithms that perform reasonably in practice, there has been very little in the literature although the problem is quite important for many applications. Our algorithm is guaranteed to find the exact solution finitely many iterations, and it converges fast in practice due to the efficiency of the cutting-plane mechanism. Moreover, we also provide a method that produces successively decreasing upper-bounds of the optimal solution, while our algorithm provides successively increasing lower-bounds. Thus, the accuracy of the current solution can be estimated at any point, and the algorithm can be stopped early once a desired degree of tolerance is met. We evaluate our algorithm on sensor placement and feature selection applications showing good performance.
