The functions of the evidential probability in examining some of the situations in which conflict can arise and that can explore the tension between classical statistics and Bayesian conditioning was discussed. It was found that the evidential probability provided an objective framework for adjudicating conflicts within statistical inference mainly the conflicts between classical and Bayesian inference. A first order language with rich resources was employed for statistical purposes. The results shows that evidential probability has an important role to play where imprecise prior knowledge competes with classical statistics and that can help when the statistical knowledge was imprecise.

STORM-LK (System To Organize Representations in Meteorology-Local Knowledge) is a hum.n-Centered system that used the CMap Tools© software to represent the knowledge and reasoning of expert forecasters. It demonstrates the feasibility of using Concept-Mapping to generate large-scale multi-media knowledge models. STORM-LK can support knowledge preservation, distance learning and collaboration, and navigation through the data that are used in weather forecasting.

Distributed Constraint Satisfaction Problems (DCSP) is a general framework for multi-agent coordination and conflict resolution. While inter-agent communication in most DCSP algorithms is restricted to only exchanging values of variables, this paper provides a detailed experimental investigation of the impact of inter-agent exchange of additional legal values among agents, within a collaborative setting. We present a new run-time model that takes into account the overhead of the additional communication in various computing/networking environments and show that DCSP strategies with extra communication can lead to significant performance improvement in realistic domains.

This paper discusses the effects of tactile cueing on performance in a fixed base simulated helicopter hover task. Sixteen active-duty military helicopter pilots participated in a repeated measures two minute stationary hover test. Participants performed the hover task under four treatment conditions;tactile cueing (on/off) and secondary arithmetic task (on/off). Following each 2-minute hover, participants reported subjective situation awareness using the five point China Lake Situation Awareness Scale (CLSA). Total time on target improved with tactile cueing with a significant task by display interaction. Performance on the arithmetic task remained consistent across conditions and no significant change was seen on CLSA scores between the tactile/no tactile conditions. Results demonstrate that tactile cues can be used to improve performance in spatial tasks, such as hovering a helicopter, especially in the presence of distracting secondary workload tasks. The lack of a significant difference in SA scores may be more related to the pilots' overall high confidence in their SA, despite their variation in performance, and highlights some of the difficulties encountered when attempting to measure SA.

Behavioral treatment of migraine: Current status and future directions

The empirical support for three behavioral treatments (relaxation, biofeedback and cognitive therapy) for managing migraine headaches in children and adults is reviewed. Meta-analyses and evidence-based reports show that these approaches are of considerable value, they appear to work equally well when applied individually, in groups or in limited contact formats. Meta-analyses comparing behavioral and prophylactic medication show equivalent results. However, outcomes are optimized when these treatments are combined. Researchers are currently seeking to identify factors predictive of response to behavioral approaches. Patients experiencing medication-overuse, refractory, cluster or post-traumatic forms of headache or comorbid conditions present special challenges that can require intensive, comprehensive and multidisciplinary approaches to treatment. Behavioral treatments have met with mixed success for menstrual migraine in the few studies that have been conducted. This review concludes by highlighting directions for future research efforts such as importing treatments to settings where headache patients most often seek care and developing algorithms for optimizing combinations of behavioral and pharmacological treatments to enhance effectiveness, reduce costs, minimize dosing requirements and improve adherence to needed medications. Other research efforts include developing treatments that target the underlying pathophysiology more directly, gaining a greater understanding of mediators and moderators of behavioral treatments, exploiting e-technology for assessment and treatment, and assessing outcome in multiple ways - such as quality of life.

In this paper we present a survey of literature pertaining to graphical representations that facilitate generation and sharing of organizational knowledge. From this survey, we have culled a model of organizational knowledge in service of the identification of areas where graphical representations of knowledge might provide benefit. We also provide a discussion of the strengths and weaknesses of graphical representations for the generation and sharing of organizational knowledge.

The Mobile Agents model-based, distributed architecture, which integrates diverse components in a system for lunar and planetary surface operations, was extensively tested in a two-week field "technology retreat" at the Mars Society's Desert Research Station (MDRS) during April 2003. More than twenty scientists and engineers from three NASA centers and two universities refined and tested the system through a series of incremental scenarios. Agent software, implemented in runtime Brahms, processed GPS, health data, and voice commands - monitoring, controlling and logging science data throughout simulated EVAs with two geologists. Predefined EVA plans, modified on the fly by voice command, enabled the Mobile Agents system to provide navigation and timing advice. Communications were maintained over five wireless nodes distributed over hills and into canyons for 5 km;data, including photographs and status was transmitted automatically to the desktop at mission control in Houston. This paper describes the system configurations, communication protocols, scenarios, and test results.

A DAML ontology to provide runtime policy-based control over information exchange is described. Two different control mechanisms including semantic (content-based) filtering of messages and in-stream transformation of messages driven by policies at run-time are discussed. These mechanisms allow a more fine-grained control over dynamic and autonomous agent interactions and increases the confidence of system designers to adopt agent-based approaches in building dynamic, heterogeneous systems. Semantic filtering protects sensitive data transmission from agents of one country to the rest of the coalition members and dynamic transformation reduces the resolution of a data feed from a sensor agent of one country to a client agent in another country.

In this paper, we outline an approach to policy-based coordination in joint hum.n-agent activity. The approach is grounded in a theory of joint activity originally developed in the context of discourse, and now applied to the broader realm of hum.n-agent interaction. We have been gradually implementing selected aspects of policy-based coordination within the KAoS services framework and have been developing a body of examples that will guide additional testing of these ideas through detailed studies of work practice. © 2004 IEEE.
