This paper presents a working implementation of a course in Air Traffic Control (in the Rep. of Macedonia), which is believed to be properly tailored according to the needs of small developing countries that are likely to be users of this technology only. One version was designed for the undergraduate studies in Traffic engineering at the Technical Faculty (TFB) in Bitola. The other version is designed for the graduate studies in Automation & systems engineering at Faculty of Electrical engineering (FEE) in Skopje. While it may not he widely suitable for developing countries in general, it is believed these have largely met the objectives for such dedicated comes. Since, in all countries, some knowledge on air traffic control is indispensable in order to meet the internationally approved criteria, requirements and standards for proper world-wide air traffic operations. © 2003 IEEE.

The Level 1 Muon Trigger subsystem for BTeV will be implemented using the same architectural building blocks as the BTeV Level 1 Pixel Trigger: pipelined field programmable gate arrays feeding a farm of dedicated processing elements. The muon trigger algorithm identifies candidate tracks, and is sensitive to the muon charge (sign);candidate dimuon events are identified by complementary charge track-pairs. To insure that the trigger is operating effectively, the trigger development team is actively collaborating in an independent multi-university research program for reliable, self-aware, fault adaptive behavior in real-time embedded systems (RTES). Key elements of the architecture, algorithm, performance, and engineered reliability are presented.

A useful function of augmented reality (AR) systems is their ability to visualize occluded infrastructure directly in a user's view of the environment. This is especially important for our application context, which utilizes mobile AR for navigation and other operations in an urban environment. A key problem in the AR field is how to best depict occluded objects in such a way that the viewer can correctly infer the depth relationships between different physical and virtual objects. Showing a single occluded object with no depth context presents an ambiguous picture to the user. But showing all occluded objects in the environments leads to the "Superman's X-ray vision" problem, in which the user sees too much information to make sense of the depth relationships of objects. Our efforts differ qualitatively from previous work in AR occlusion, because our application domain involves far-field occluded objects, which are tens of meters distant from the user. Previous work has focused on near-field occluded objects, which are within or just beyond arm's reach, and which use different perceptual cues. We designed and evaluated a number of sets of display attributes. We then conducted a user study to determine which representations best express occlusion relationships among far-field objects. We identify a drawing style and opacity settings that enable the user to accurately interpret three layers of occluded objects, even in the absence of perspective constraints.

In this paper we present a genetically enhanced version of the classical fuzzy c-means clustering algorithm. Our algorithm uses an evolutionary method to find optimal values for some scaling constants which are used to scale the various dimensions of the given data set so that clusters can be more easily detected by compensating for differences in distributions among features. We demonstrate how using un-scaled data with the conventional fuzzy c-means algorithm can lead to incorrect classification and how our algorithm overcomes the problem. We present the results of applying our method to both a synthetic data set, which we created to demonstrate the problem, and the standard Iris data set. In both cases, reduction of misclassifications was obtained by the new method, demonstrating improvement over the standard fuzzy c-means algorithm. © 2002 World Scientific Publishing Company.

This paper provides a framework for doing facial gaze correction in video sequences. The proposed framework involves stages of face registration, face parameter mapping and face synthesis. We introduce the concept of analogous views, and derive a novel formulation which, extends view transfers based on epipolar geometry to cope with non-rigid motion. Additionally, a disparity mapping function is derived which is learned from training data and handles both spatial disparities as well as pixel-value changes. The disparity mapping function generalizes to facial expressions, illumination conditions and individuals not in the training set, as shown by the results obtained.

There is growing interest in accessing, relating, and combining data from multiple sources on the Web. Today, web users access the web through two dominant interfaces: clicking on hyperlinks (browsing) and searching via keyword queries (crawling). This process is often time-consuming and unsatisfactory because of the many inaccurate and irrelevant results that are returned. Better support is needed for expressing one's information requirements and dealing in more structured and systematic ways with one's search results. This paper presents ALII, our proposal for providing this support. ALII is an Active Logic based framework for Information integration, which can utilize a compact context representation and constructs a hierarchy model of query and web pages. The ALII project aims developing methods and tools for a model based, semantic integration of information sources on web pages.

This paper describes the performance evaluation of an SIMD system on a commonly encountered Standard Linear Equation problem. We introduce a prototype SIMD system, called the Systola 1024, whose parallel architecture is based upon the inst.uction Systolic Array concept. To evaluate the performance of this architecture we have implemented an in-cache problem to measure its MFLOP by solving the Gaussian Elimination problem to obtain the LU factorization. We also examine the effects of increasing the array processors by a certain factor.

Layered Surface Acoustic Wave (SAW) transducers were fabricated and modelled by finite-element method. A comparison of the frequency response of the measured devices and simulated structures are presented. The transducer structure is based on a two-port delay line, employing x-cut, y-propagating lithium niobate (LiNbO/sub 3/) substrate and a thin film zinc oxide (ZnO) guiding layer. A finite-element approach was employed to simulate a 3-dimensional version of the fabricated device. A transient analysis was conducted, where electrical and mechanical boundary values were applied. Simulation results show good agreement with experimental results, indicating that a finite-element approach is appropriate for modelling layered SAW transducers.

We present a simulation and design framework for simultaneously designing and modeling electromechanical systems. By inst.ntiating component objects and connecting them to each other via ports, a designer can configure complex systems. This configuration information is then used to automatically generate a corresponding system-level simulation model. The building block of our framework is the component object. It encapsulates design data and behavioral models and their inter-relationships. Component objects are composed into systems by connecting their ports. However, when converting a system configuration into a corresponding simulation model, the corresponding models for the component objects do not capture the physical phenomena at the component interfaces the interactions. To obtain an accurate composition, the interaction dynamics must also be captured in behavioral models. In this paper, we introduce the concept of an interaction model that captures the dynamics of the interaction. When two ports are connected, there is an intended interaction between the two components. For composition of component objects to work, an interaction model must be introduced between each pair of connected behavioral models. We illustrate these ideas using an example.
