The use of FEC coding, possibly in conjuction with ARQ techniques, has emerged as a promising approach for video transport over ATM networks with/without wireless links for cell recovery and/or bit error recovery. Although FEC provides cell loss recovery capabilities it also introduces overhead which can possibly cause more cell losses. A methodology based on information-theoretic limits is described to maximize the number of sources multiplexed by using FEC codes.

With several commercial tools becoming available, the high-level synthesis of application-specific integrated circuits is finding wide spread acceptance in VLSI industry today. Existing tools for synthesis focus on optimizing cost while meeting performance constraints or vice versa. Yet, verification and testing have emerged as major concerns of IC vendors since the repercussions of chips being recalled are far-reaching. In this paper, we concentrate on the synthesis of testable RTL designs using techniques from Artificial Intelligence. We present an adaptive version of the well known Simulated Annealing algorithm and describe its application to a combinatorial optimization problem arising in the high-level synthesis of digital systems. The conventional annealing algorithm was conceived with a single perturb operator which applies a small modification to the existing solution to derive a new solution. The Metropolis criterion is then used to accept or reject the new solution. In some of the complex optimization problems arising in VLSI design, a set of perturb functions become necessary, leading to the question of how to select a particular function for modifying the current system configuration. The adaptive algorithm described here uses the concept of reward and penalty from the theory of learning automata to "learn" to apply the appropriate perturb function. We have applied both the conventional simulated annealing algorithm and the adaptive simulated annealing algorithm to the problem of testability-oriented datapath synthesis for signal processing applications. Our experimental results indicate that the adaptive algorithm can yield better solutions in shorter time.

Data security is an important issue in today's computer networks. This paper presents the HiPCrypto chip, which implements the IDEA cryptographic algorithm. HiPCrypto is oriented towards computer network applications demanding high throughput. Its architecture exploits both the spatial and the temporal parallelism available in the IDEA algorithm. When operating at a 53 MHz clock, HiPCrypto can encrypt/decrypt at data rates up to 3.4 Gbps.

Channel compensation has been proved to be an effective approach for robust speech recognition. We first use two level cepstral mean substraction (CMS) for channel compensation in telephone speech recognition, and then propose a new channel compensation method, RMFCC. For all experiments, a Korean isolated 84 words database consisting of 80 speakers collected from a local telephone line is adopted. Using the RMFCC, a 39.8% reduction in word error rate is obtained relative to the conventional HMM system. It is shown from the experiments that the RMFCC, compared with RASTA, reduces the computational complexity without losing accuracy, and is also better than the CMS and two level CMS in performance.

The general question considered in this paper is how to embed the 2D dynamics of discrete linear repetitive processes into a standard (1D) linear state space model for control related analysis. Previous work had obtained a partial answer in the form of an affine model structure due to a time varying term arising from the initial conditions on each pass. This paper shows how this term can be removed by state variable transformations and hence complete the solution of this general question.

Spread spectrum techniques are often utilized when designing wireless communication systems. The success of a spread spectrum system depends greatly upon the spreading codes employed by the transmitters. In this paper, a novel approach to the generation of spreading codes is examined. In particular, spreading codes are generated as the impulse responses of a multirate subband filter bank. A methodology is presented for designing the filter banks such that the resulting spreading codes have properties which are desirable in a multiuser wireless communications environment. Several examples are given for different types of commonly encountered interference sources. Results are then generated which compare the newly developed spreading codes to more traditional spreading techniques.

This work investigates visual characteristics of specular surfaces during rotation, and gives approaches to qualitatively identify and quantitatively recover shapes of these surfaces. Continuous images are taken when an object rotates. We look at specularly reflected patterns on the surfaces and their motion in the EPIs parallel to the rotation plane, from which estimation of each surface point and construction of the object model are carried out. We find very simple and direct methods to fulfill this objective; linear equations for multiple lights illumination, and a 1st-order differential equation for single light illumination. The motion of specular reflection has nice global characteristics in EPI. The surface types range from very shiny metal surfaces to surfaces with only week specular reflectance. We give both simulation and experiments on real objects.< >

In this paper we propose a general framework for viewing a class of heuristics for track assignment in channel routing from a purely graph theoretic angle. Within this framework we propose algorithms for computing routing solutions using optimal or near optimal number of tracks for several well-known benchmark channels in the two-layer VH. Three-layer HVH, and multi-layer V/sub i/H/sub i/ and V/sub i/H/sub i+1/ routing models. Within the same framework we also design an algorithm for minimizing the total wire length in the two-layer VH and three-layer HVH routing models.

Multivariable controller design for the regulation of blood pressure and flowrate in congestive heart failure patients is typically limited by the sample time for blood flowrate. We present a multirate model predictive control (MPC) design for the multidrug infusion problem, based on a comprehensive nonlinear model of the system. The MPC design is based on NL-QDMC, with a selective linearization method introduced to reduce computation time. External constraints on dopamine infusion specify a 'forbidden zone' in addition to upper and lower bounds. The multirate MPC design includes a novel rule-based override that is used to avoid any infusion in this region. Simulation results are used to illustrate the performance of the controller.
