One missing link between CAD and CAM is the lack of a systematic methodology for generating and evaluating alternative ways to manufacture a proposed design. To address this problem, we are developing a systematic approach for generating and evaluating alternative ways to manufacture machined parts, in order to provide information to the designer about the manufacturability of the proposed design, and information to the process engineer about how best to machine the part. This paper describes our overall approach, and how MRSEVs (Material Removal Shape Element Volumes, a STEP library of machining features) can be used to support it. © 1993 ASME 1993 International computers in engineering Conference and Exposition, CIE 1993. A bottom-up state-space size estimation algorithm for Petri nets (PNs) is described. The algorithm permits fairly arbitrary subnets and interconnections. State counting (SC) functions are associated with subnets and manipulated by the interconnections. As illustrated by a flexible manufacturing system (FMS) example, if no approximations of the subnets are needed, the state-space size estimation is exact. Other benefits include simple tabular representation of SC functions, and the ability to interject hand-computed results. While all conceivable PNs cannot be handled by any bottom-up method, the interconnection can be extended to permit analysis on a larger class of systems.< >

Over the years, communication speed of networks has increased from a few Kbps to several Mbps, as also has the bandwidth demand. Communication protocols, however, have not improved to that extent. With the advent of Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM), it is now possible to "tune" protocols to current and future demands. It is shown that fractal dimension estimates and Gabor wavelet coefficients are valid features of segmenting high-resolution polarimetric synthetic aperture radar imagery. Results of training a radial basis function neural network using fractal dimension features, Gabor wavelet coefficients, and a combination of both fractal and Gabor wavelet features are presented. Current research into combining these two techniques both theoretically and empirically is presented. One-foot resolution polarimetric synthetic aperture radar imagery is successfully segmented into culture, tree, field, and shadow regions.< >

The authors study the ergodic control problem of switching diffusions of representing a typical hybrid system that arises in numerous applications such as fault-tolerant control systems and flexible manufacturing systems. Under certain conditions, they establish the existence of a stable Markov nonrandomized policy which is almost certainly optimal for the pathwise long-run average cost criterion. They they study the corresponding Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) equation and establish the existence of a unique solution in a certain class. Using this, they characterize the optimal policy as a minimizing selector of the Hamiltonian associated with the HJB equations. They apply these results to a failure-prone manufacturing system and show that the optimal production rate is of the hedging point type.< >

A general approach to synthesizing a class of Petri nets that model shared-resource automated manufacturing systems is proposed. The approach imposes minimal restrictions on the interactions among the subsystems initially so that the modeler is given more freedom. To modularize the synthesis procedure, a shared-resource system is formulated as the processes, i.e., the subsystems, that control the system resources and the interactions among the processes. For modeling the processes, resource control nets are defined as the generic modules. The system model is built by merging these modules through their common transitions and common transition subnets, which denote the interactions among the processes. The merged net is proved to be conservative and thus bounded. An algorithm is also developed for checking two sufficient conditions for structural liveness of the net. This algorithm examines only the net's structure, and appears to be more efficient than state enumeration techniques such as the reachability graph method.< >

A new method for the solution of continuous time Markov chains is proposed. The method is based on the numerical integration of the underlying differential equation. The stepsize of the integration is chosen to minimize the error of the steady state solution. Results show that for a given number of floating point operations; the integration method converges faster than the Gauss-Seidel or successive over-relaxation method when sparse and stiff transition rate matrices are considered.< >

Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) is acknowledged as being of vital importance to economy. The demand that NWP places on computing system performance has increased dramatically since the introduction of computer systems and is siili growing. This paper describes the implementation of a one-level barotropic spectral NWP model using the high level functional language SISAL. Our initial approach was a direct transliteration from FORTRAN to SISAL, the result of which was a large amount of array copying and loss of parallelism. The algorithm of the model was then rearranged to enable effective exploitation of parallelism by an optimising SISAL compiler. The parallel implementation technique and its potential for modeling with larger model sizes are discussed, and the improved results for an Encore Multimax multiprocessor are presented. © 1990 ACM.

Minority carrier lifetimes in the base of solar cells made on GaAs and InP were measured by the open-circuit voltage decay method. The measurement technique and the conditions under which the minority carrier lifetimes can be measured are described. Minority carrier lifetimes ranging from 1.6 to 34 ns in InP of different doping concentrations were measured. A minority carrier lifetime of 6ns was measured in n-type GaAs, which agrees well with the lifetime of 5.7 ns measured by transient microwave reflection.< >

Research results regarding synthesis techniques for Petri nets are reviewed. These methods can be adopted for modeling parallel and distributed application environments such as automated manufacturing systems to provide a solution for handling complex and concurrent interactions. Significant synthesis techniques, which are basically classified into bottom-up and top-down methods, are discussed. Bottom-up techniques, consisting of merging of places and sharing of simple elementary paths, have the advantage of ease of system description since the modeled subsystems usually have real-life correspondences. Nevertheless, with existing techniques the synthesized system may not exhibit the same control properties as the subsystems. Top-down methods, including refinement of transitions and refinement of places, have the advantage of viewing the system globally, which may generate more structured designs. However, it is difficult to apply these methods to environments with highly shared resources. Automated manufacturing system examples are given to demonstrate the applications of the methods.< >
