Efficient realization of givens rotation through algorithm-architecture co-design for acceleration of qr factorization

We present efficient realization of Generalized Givens Rotation (GGR) based QR factorization that achieves 3-100x better performance in terms of Gflops/watt over state-of-the-art realizations on multicore, and General Purpose Graphics Processing Units (GPGPUs). GGR is an improvement over classical Givens Rotation (GR) operation that can annihilate multiple elements of rows and columns of an input matrix simultaneously. GGR takes 33% lesser multiplications compared to GR. For custom implementation of GGR, we identify macro operations in GGR and realize them on a Reconfigurable Data-path (RDP) tightly coupled to pipeline of a Processing Element (PE). In PE, GGR attains speed-up of 1.1x over Modified Householder Transform (MHT) presented in the lit ENGLerature. For parallel realization of GGR, we use REDEFINE, a scalable massively parallel Coarse-grained Reconfigurable Architecture, and show that the speed-up attained is commensurate with the hardware resources in REDEFINE. GGR also outperforms General Matrix Multiplication (gemm) by 10% in-terms of Gflops/watt which is counter-intuitive. Copyright © 2018, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Humans use signs, e.g., sentences in a spoken language, for communication and thought. Hence, symbol systems like language are crucial for our communication with other agents and adaptation to our real-world environment. The symbol systems we use in our human society adaptively and dynamically change over time. In the context of artificial intelligence (AI) and cognitive systems, the symbol grounding problem has been regarded as one of the central problems related to symbols. However, the symbol grounding problem was originally posed to connect symbolic AI and sensorimotor information and did not consider many interdisciplinary phenomena in human communication and dynamic symbol systems in our society, which semiotics considered. In this paper, we focus on the symbol emergence problem, addressing not only cognitive dynamics but also the dynamics of symbol systems in society, rather than the symbol grounding problem. We first introduce the notion of a symbol in semiotics from the humanities, to leave the very narrow idea of symbols in symbolic AI. Furthermore, over the years, it became more and more clear that symbol emergence has to be regarded as a multifaceted problem. Therefore, secondly, we review the history of the symbol emergence problem in different fields, including both biological and artificial systems, showing their mutual relations. We summarize the discussion and provide an integrative viewpoint and comprehensive overview of symbol emergence in cognitive systems. Additionally, we describe the challenges facing the creation of cognitive systems that can be part of symbol emergence systems. Copyright © 2018, The Authors. All rights reserved.

In this paper, we propose a novel data transformation scheme over a big data platform, aiming at injecting production data from the local database in the factory side and transforming them into the workpiece-centric form that many manufacturing analytics systems need. The key idea is to blend big data processing techniques, including table composition with external distributed files, columnar storage, partition, massively parallel processing into the data transformation scheme for minimizing the data processing time. Our proposed scheme brings two main impacts to the smart manufacturing. First, our scheme plays the key component to develop data-driven manufacturing decision systems, since large-volume production data sources can be efficiently transformed into the workpiece-centric form that other smart manufacturing services require. Second, our proposed scheme provides a development exemplar to assist a manufacturing factory toward the Industry-4.0 realm, since big data techniques are ingeniously blended in building data-intensive manufacturing services. We finally implement the prototype of the proposed scheme on the Hadoop platform and apply the prototype to a semiconductor factory for conducting integrated tests. Testing results of a case study physically applying the proposed scheme to a semiconductor factory demonstrate the success of our work.

This paper discusses opportunities to parallelize graph based path planning algorithms in a time varying environment. Parallel architectures have become commonplace, requiring algorithm to be parallelized for efficient execution. An additional focal point of this paper is the inclusion of inaccuracies in path planning as a result of forecast error variance, accuracy of calculation in the cost functions and a different observed vehicle speed in the real mission than planned. In this context, robust path planning algorithms will be described. These algorithms are equally applicable to land based, aerial, or underwater mobile autonomous systems. The results presented here provide the basis for a future research project in which the parallelized algorithms will be evaluated on multi and many core systems such as the dual core ARM Panda board and the 48 core Single-chip Cloud computer (SCC). Modern multi and many core processors support a wide range of performance vs. energy tradeoffs that can be exploited in energyconstrained environments such as battery operated autonomous underwater vehicles. For this evaluation, the boards will be deployed within the Slocum glider, a commercially available, buoyancy driven autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV). Copyright © 2017, The Authors. In the paper, a new approach to the robust optimal design is proposed. The idea is to consider the sensitivity as an extra objective function which is cost-effective. The optimal design of a switched-reluctance motor is considered as the case study: since the case study exhibits two design criteria, the Pareto front trading off three objective functions is approximated by means of evolutionary computing. © 2017 IEEE.

In the paper, the Wind Driven Optimization WDO algorithm is applied to the optimal shape design of a class of switched reluctance motors. The goal of the optimization is to identify a class of geometries which maximize the torque and simultaneously minimize the iron losses of the motor. Because of the twofold design criterion, the multi-objective version of the wind driven algorithm M-WDO is used. Results are eventually compared with those obtained by means of a standard genetic algorithm GA. © 2017 IEEE.

Complete and incomplete additive/multiplicative pairwise comparison matrices are ap- plied in preference modelling, multi-attribute decision making and ranking. The equivalence of two well known methods is proved in this paper. The arithmetic (geometric) mean of weight vectors, calculated from all spanning trees, is proved to be optimal to the (loga- rithmic) least squares problem, not only for complete, as it was recently shown in Lundy, M., Siraj, S., Greco, S. (2017): The mathematical equivalence of the "spanning tree" and row geometric mean preference vectors and its implications for preference analysis, European Journal of Operational Research 257(1) 197{208, but for incomplete matrices as well. Unlike the complete case, where an explicit formula, namely the row arithmetic/geometric mean of matrix elements, exists for the (logarithmic) least squares problem, the incomplete case requires a completely different and new proof. Wireless sensor networks operate in open environments with potentially rough conditions. The utilised protocols to implement routing decisions in such networks are typically designed to work under challenging external influences. In this paper, we focus on the most popular representative, the Routing Protocol for Low Power and Lossy Networks (RPL), and propose a set of techniques to improve the routing schemes. We transfer the concepts of computational trust and forgiveness as known from the Organic Computing domain and equip participating nodes with dynamic decision schemes to choose interaction partners in RPL. We evaluate the different concepts in simulations with changing topological structure and different attacks. Based on this setting, we identify which concept promises the highest benefit and outline how this can be utilised in RPL.

Recent technological developments in Unmanned Aerial systems (UAS) have allowed the integration of UAS into the field of marine science. UAS provide a low risk, low cost platform to collect and relay data at various spatial and temporal scales. As an integral part of Ocean Observation systems (OOS), UAS can provide an agile platform for delivering high-bandwidth, high-frequency data between surface sensors, roving sensors (AUVs and other UAS's), OOS hubs, and surface stations. Harnessing this new capability can improve the quality and efficiency of data collection and distribution by OOS, which yields improved data for the adaptive management of marine resources.
