We consider distributed optimization where N nodes in a generic, connected network minimize the sum of their individual, locally known, convex costs. Existing literature proposes distributed gradient-like methods that are attractive due to computationally cheap iterations and provable resilience to random inter-node communication failures, but such methods have slow theoretical and empirical convergence rates. Building from the centralized Nesterov gradient methods, we propose accelerated distributed gradient-like methods and establish that they achieve strictly faster rates than existing distributed methods. At the same time, our methods maintain cheap iterations and resilience to random communication failures. Specifically, for convex, differentiable local costs with Lipschitz continuous and bounded derivative, we establish (with respect to the cost function optimality) convergence in probability and convergence rates in expectation and in second moment.

Educational inst.tutions across the World rely heavily on IT in teaching-learning that accept the services provision and business needs. Whereas buying and preserving a huge number of devices used in educational process whether it is licensed software and/or original hardware require great investment and special skills to support them in the current financial crisis which affect the growing needs while the Higher Education System is facing many obstacles in supplying vital technology support for educational process and its performance measurements. This paper highlights the advantages of Cloud Computing which is the better mechanism for using ICT to enhance Egyptian Higher Education, such technology provides easy accessibility and scalability, storage and cost minimization. Accordingly, implementing the proposed framework of the Hybrid Cloud Computing for the Egyptian Virtual University will have a significant contribution for enhancing the educational process in the country.

In this study, we perform a device evaluation from trial device production (a computer simulation) using technology CAD (TCAD) in an integrated circuit consistent education system, which consists of a series of processes: system design, semiconductor process, trial device production, and device evaluation. By changing the device parameters (kinds of material, film thickness, impurities density) of the semiconductor process, the simulation can more closely approximate the electrical property of the desired target performance. By integrating the simulation technology using TCAD with each piece of knowledge mastered by the integrated circuit consistent education system, which is currently under development, we are able to construct an education system that can be mastered not only for an integrated circuit for information processing but also for the semiconductor process and the global perspective of the device structure in a power device. Furthermore, the possibility of applicability to a new device structure and process development is shown by means of a simulation using TCAD in virtual processing conditions.

The Prosthesis-User-in-the-Loop simulator concept represents an approach to integrate users to prosthetic development by a holistic simulation of gait with a prosthesis. It aims at a more user-centered design of lower limb prosthetic devices by utilizing user experience and assessment. As this requires a complex mechanical robot design and sophisticated control strategies that allow for restoring lost biomechanical function, this paper presents the conception and design of a hardware simulator for proof-of-concept studies of those issues. For those investigations, the ankle joints of healthy praticpants are locked mechanically to induce a temporary disability. The task of the simulator is to provide a simulation of physiological gait by artificially restoring ankle functionality. Therefore, the biody-namic behaviour of the locked ankle joint and the enviroment have to be mimicked mechnically. After introducing Prosthesis-User-in-the-Loop simulator idea, the conception of a proof-of-concept simulator is presented. From this, an analytical model is derived and inverse dynamics simulation are used for design. The resulting mechanism is limited to sagittal plane movements and thus has three degrees of freedom. The actuators are dimensioned to meet the requirements of walking motions in the human subject with maximum body height among the test population.

With the increasing performance demand in real-time systems it becomes more and more relevant to provide feed-back to engineers and programmers, but also software development tools, on the performance-relevant code parts of a real-time program. So far, the information provided to programmers through tools was limited to an estimation of the worst-case execution time (WCET) and its associated worst-case execution path (WCEP). However, these metrics only provide partial information. Only those code parts that are on one of the WCEPs are indicated to the programmer. No information is provided for all other code parts. To give an accurate view covering the entire code base, tools in the spirit of standard program profiling tools are required. This work proposes an efficient approach to compute worst-case timing information for all code parts of a program using a complementary metric, called criticality. Every statement of a real-time program is assigned a criticality value, expressing how critical the respective code is with respect to the global WCET. This gives an accuratc view to programmers how closc the worst execution path passing through a specific part of a real-time program is to the global WCEP. We formally define the criticality metric and investigate some of its properties with respect to dominance in control-flow graphs. Exploiting some of those properties, we propose an algorithm that reduces tlic overhead of computing the metric to cover complete real-time programs. Copyright 2012 ACM.

This paper introduces a robotic concept for the assessment of psychological factors in prosthetic design. Its aim is to imitate the postural movements of the participants while those are conducting squatting movements in order to investigate the integration of artificial limbs to the subject's body scheme. Therefore, the robot mimics the functionality and appearance of the human foot, shank and thigh as well as the ankle and knee joint. To induce a more realistic outer appearance, the hull of a shop-window mannequin is used as cladding. The robot is controlled by a computed torque control combined with a RGB-D sensor for the acquisition of the desired trajectories from the participant. In the test setup one leg of the participant is hidden from his view while the robot stands next to him and imitates the movements of this leg. This paper gives an insight in the theory of body schema integration. The concept of the robot is described and detailed information about the mechanical design and actuator dimensioning in accordance with psychological and biomechanical requirements are given. Furthermore, the concept of the human-machine interface, the control algorithm and simulations based on experimental data from a human subject are presented.

In this paper, a novel driver for high brightness LED applications that can directly run from AC voltage is presented. Conventional LED drivers for such applications consist of switching-type converters which require passive components like high value inductors and electrolytic capacitors for their operation. The use of such components increases the size and cost of the LED system while decreasing the overall life time. The proposed circuit only needs active devices like MOSFETs and op-amps for power processing. The input current is selectively controlled to follow a sinusoidal waveform to achieve low harmonic distortion and high power factor. A simple start-up circuit is also designed for selfsufficient operation with a more efficient set-up under development. The efficiency of the proposed system is around 82% for a 1.5W converter with 9% total harmonic distortion. Such an implementation is also more suitable for IC design. Both simulation and experimental results have been presented to validate the operation of the proposed set-up.

In this paper, we propose a model of Long-reach Passive Optical Network (LR-PON) using multi-wavelength optical code-division multiplexing (OCDM) and Erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA). In addition, we analyze the effects of EDFA noise on the performance of OCDM-based LR-PON. Other noise and interference such as shot noise, thermal noise, beat noise, and multiple-access interference (MAI) are included in our theoretical analysis and simulation. We found that the location of EDFA on the link between OLT and ONUs plays an important role in network design since it affects network performance. According to the simulation results, to achieve low bit error rate, the EDFA should be located around 15 to 25 km from OLT when total link distance of 90 km.
