Beach recession is spreading in Mediterranean by effects of climatic change. RUSICA is a Cellular Automata model, that is in developing phase for simulating such a complex phenomenon, considering its main mechanisms: loose particles (sand, gravel, silt, clay, etc.) mobilization, suspension, deposit and transport, triggered by waves and currents. A simplified version of the model was implemented and applied to data, related to the sandy shore of Torre Lapillo (Porto Cesareo, Italy), in August 2010, where shore evolution was monitored, even if data quality and quantity aren’t ideal in order to feed RUSICA. Simulations of different scenarios of stormy sea in that area evidenced the adequate performance of the model in capturing the main emergent features of the phenomenon in despite of the simplified approach.

Image registration technique has played a major role due to the use of data from different medical imaging modalities in which your main goal is to find anatomical and/or functional matches in two or more images. SIFT algorithm was used to extract a set of descriptors in IVUS images of two different pullbacks and to determine the number of common features between each pair of images. Similarity map was created to establish correspondences between two PCI images. Our method, with saltatory condition, was proved be a good choice in the experiments and in the real case, showing great stability in the establishment of correspondences and reducing overall time used for the diagnosis and/or monitor the development of coronary heart disease.

CAs coastal dynamics is a very complex system, computer simulation is a valid approach to plan real action. During SIGIEC Project a new Macroscopic Cellular Automata was designed i.e. RUSICA for morphodynamics studies of the beaches. MCA methodology, used for investigating natural macroscopic systems, is an alternative approach to PDE. Through local interactions of their constituent parts MCA operating on different specification levels to be compared to experimental data. Simulation allowed to study the dynamics and modified orography with artificial solutions for erosion contrast as at Porto Cesareo (Apulia Italy). Results of simulations of different scenarios of stormy sea in that area here are given together with evidence of effect of artificial barrier built in order to contrast the coastal erosion progress.

To share information more effectively in a laboratory, this study develops a method to collect and visualize research documents as well as research activities efficiently without exception. First, this paper introduces a research information relation graph that reflects research activities that obtain information. Furthermore, this paper makes research activities modeled as productions that help to generate the graph and defines the graph grammar, which generates a research information relation graph, by using the production. It is expected that conducting research in accordance with this grammar can reduce the burden of laboratory members in making research information graphs and make information sharing easy by visualizing both research documents and the context information. Customizing the graph grammar in accordance with a particular scenario and applying this method to various scenarios can make it easy to realize a system for collecting and sharing research information in different research fields.

This work proposes an intelligent decision system for a residential infrastructure based on wireless sensors and actuator networks, called ResiDI. ResiDI is equipped with battery-powered nodes to ensure that they are deployable anywhere in the house without the need for wiring, drilling or any pre-existing infrastructure. The key intelligence of ResiDI is distributed in the decider nodes, which are able to make decisions locally without the need to send traffic from the sensor nodes to the sink. The network intelligence core is based on a neural network that seeks to improve the accuracy of the decision-making, together with a temporal correlation mechanism that is targeted at reducing the energy consumption. When compared with an approach adopted in the literature, the results show that ResiDI is efficient in different scenarios in all evaluations performed.

In the past few decades, a standard model of cosmology, ΛCDM, has emerged. According to our understanding, our Universe is about 13.8 billion years old, and expanded from an initial hot and dense state. Baryonic matter accounts for 5% of its present matter-energy content, non-baryonic dark matter for about 25%, and some unknown form of energy with negative pressure, dubbed dark energy, for the remaining 70%. The galaxies and clusters of galaxies that we observe today form by the gravitational collapse of tiny primordial fluctuations of the spacetime metric, thought to originate from an early stage of fast accelerated expansion, known as cosmic inflation. But very fundamental questions remain unanswered: we do not know what the dark matter and dark energy are, whether dark matter interacts, or if extra light particles exist. We are unsure whether inflation did indeed take place and exactly what physics was at work in the very early Universe. We still have to reconcile the laws of gravitation with the standard model of particle interactions – both of which are known to be incomplete and require extensions to explain existing observations. We do not know the topology of the Universe, or whether it is finite or infinite. We do not fully understand how structure forms, or why some structures on small scales appear to be incompatible with ΛCDM predictions. We do not have a convincing explanation for anomalies in the large-scale statistics of cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropies, except invoking chance multipole alignments and excursions in tails of the realization of a Gaussian random field. The distribution of matter and energy in the Universe, by virtue of being the product of physical laws and their effect on the Universe’s constituents, encodes answers to these questions. Current research in neural tissue engineering relies heavily on in vivo animal models of neurological injury. This has a number of major drawbacks. Using innovative imaging technologies and allied data analytics, this paper presents our current work on analysing advanced 3-D models of the hippocampal circuitry, using a laminar 3-D network of orthogonally orientated nanoscale fibres constructed within a 3-D collagen gel matrix. Preliminary work on primary animal neuronal cells was able to reveal the complex responses of the neuronal cells to chemical attachment factors and topographical cues present in the in vivo-like environment of the constructed 3-D scaffold. Results suggest that the approach has validity and has helped in defining important parameters for future investigations.

In this paper, we present a technique that uses multimodal interactions of users to generate a more accurate list of recommendations optimized for the user. Our approach is a response to the actual scenario on the Web which allows users to interact with the content in different ways, and thus, more information about his preferences can be obtained to improve recommendation. The proposal consists of an ensemble technique that combines rankings generated by unimodal recommenders based on particular interaction types. By using a combination of implicit and explicit feedback from users, we are able to provide better recommendations, as shown by our experimental evaluation presented in this paper.

This paper analyzes the execution behavior of web services on devices with limited resources. The experiments compare web services in the Axis2 and CXF frameworks analyzing performance and power consumption. To determine which framework is better suited for service provision, a testing environment and a performance and energy evaluation between them are presented. We show that the Raspberry Pi can be useful in service-oriented applications for different types of tasks. Bringing together the best features of small devices and SoC, it is possible to provide diverse, mobile and green applications.
