Pervasive games form a problematic digital games category. On the one hand, they appear extremely promising for purposes such as learning and for encouraging players to engage in healthy outdoor activities. They widen the horizon of game contents by direct access to reality. On the other hand, a larger number of pervasive games failed badly bearing abundant evidence for the need of better understanding the essentials of pervasive games and of the experiences in playing pervasively. Hierarchies of pervasive games reveal strengths and weaknesses of those games and allow for partially ordering pervasive games. Storyboarding is an appropriate technology for the representation of several essentials characterizing experiences of game play. ALIENS ON THE BUS is some novel pervasive game to illuminate the reach of the storyboarding approach to games classification.

There is an interesting category of digital games particularly challenging consumer electronics: pervasive games. On the one hand, pervasive games appear extremely promising for purposes such as learning and for encouraging players to engage in healthy outdoor activities. They widen the horizon of games content by direct access to reality. On the other hand, a larger number of pervasive games failed badly bearing abundant evidence for the need of better understanding the essentials of pervasive games and of the experience in playing them. The authors have developed not only a single pervasive game concept, but a whole family of concepts quite suitable for systematically challenging consumer electronics aiming at a wide spectrum of effects ranging from amusement to game-based learning.

Segmenting page images into text lines is a crucial pre-processing step for automated reading of historical documents. Challenging issues in this open research field are given e.g. by paper or parchment background noise, ink bleed-through, artifacts due to aging, stains, and touching text lines. In this paper, we present a novel binarization-free line segmentation method that is robust to noise and copes with overlapping and touching text lines. First, interest points representing parts of characters are extracted from gray-scale images. Next, word clusters are identified in high-density regions and touching components such as ascenders and descenders are separated using seam carving. Finally, text lines are generated by concatenating neighboring word clusters, where neighborhood is defined by the prevailing orientation of the words in the document. An experimental evaluation on the Latin manuscript images of the Saint Gall database shows promising results for real-world applications in terms of both accuracy and efficiency. © 2012 IEEE.

The physiotherapy and rehabilitation process is an expensive and time consuming affair. It also requires the direct supervision of the specialists for effective results. This high cost coupled with high demand prohibits many patients from receiving appropriate care. Moreover, the emotional and mental strain is excessive for patients and is counterproductive to the therapy. In this paper, we tackle the boredom aspect of the rehabilitation process wherein we develop a therapy system that uses computer games to emulate the therapeutic activities. We describe, in some details, the issues involved in the development process. Commercial of the shelf product is employed (the Xbox Kinect) so the cost is significantly reduced and the accessibility is greatly increased. The system was tested on children at a local hospital, and the feedback was highly encouraging. This work opens avenues for more research to be conducted in exercise development, movement emulation, and game design. Moreover, commercialization of these games is an interesting endeavor.

Underwater Acoustic Networks (UANs) are an emerging technology that are being used to facilitate new aquatic applications in our water world. This is accomplished by linking underwater sensors, vehicles and devices together using acoustic communication. Network protocol development for UANs often relies on simulations because deploying real systems in the ocean is a resource heavy operation. However, acoustic communication performance is dynamic and dependent upon the environment. Therefore, simulations may not be entirely accurate. In this paper we introduce an advanced channel model that considers environmental impacts and real system characteristics on acoustic communication performance for use in an established open-source simulation environment, Aqua-Sim. We provide detailed simulation results and compare the results of our channel model with the existing simulation environment and against.the results from a field experiment in the Chesapeake Bay from 2011.

One aspect of self-organizing systems is their desired ability to be self-learning, i.e., to be able to adapt dynamically to conditions in their environment. This quality is awkward especially if it comes to applications in security or safety-sensitive areas. Here a step towards more trustful systems could be taken by providing transparency of the processes of a system. An important means of giving feedback to an operator is the visualization of the internal processes of a system. In this position paper we address the problem of visualizing dynamic processes especially in self-learning systems. We take an existing self-learning system from the field of computer vision as an example from which we derive questions of general interest such as possible options to visualize the flow of information in a dynamic learning system or the visualization of symbolic data. As a side effect the visualization of learning processes may provide a better understanding of underlying principles of learning in general, i.e, also in biological systems. That may also facilitate improved designs of future self-learning systems. © 2012 IEEE.

Future semiconductors no longer guarantee permanent deterministic operation. They are expected to show probabilistic behavior due to lowered voltages and shrinking structures. Compared to radiation-induced errors, probabilistic systems face increased error frequencies leading to unexpected bit-flips. Approaches like probabilistic CMOS provide methods to control error distributions which reduce the error probability in more significant bits. However, inst.uctions handling control flow or pointers still expect deterministic operation, thus requiring a classification to identify these inst.uctions. We apply our transient error classification to probabilistic circuits using differing voltage distributions. Static analysis ensures that probabilistic effects only affect unreliable operations which accept a certain level of impreciseness, and that errors in probabilistic components will never propagate to critical operations. To evaluate, we analyze robustness and quality-of-service of an H.264 video decoder. Using classification results, we map unreliable arithmetic operations onto probabilistic components of a simulated ARM-based architecture, while the remaining operations use deterministic components. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

Regression models have been widely studied to investigate whether multimodal neuroimaging measures can be used as effective biomarkers for predicting cognitive outcomes in the study of Alzheimer's Disease (AD). Most existing models overlook the interrelated structures either within neuroimaging measures or between cognitive outcomes, and thus may have limited power to yield optimal solutions. To address this issue, we propose to incorporate an 2,1 norm and/or a group 2,1 norm (G 2,1 norm) in the regression models. Using ADNI-1 and ADNI-GO/2 data, we apply these models to examining the ability of structural MRI and AV-45 PET scans for predicting cognitive measures including ADAS and RAVLT scores. We focus our analyses on the participants with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), a prodromal stage of AD, in order to identify useful patterns for early detection. Compared with traditional linear and ridge regression methods, these new models not only demonstrate superior and more stable predictive performances, but also identify a small set of imaging markers that are biologically meaningful. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

We initiate the study of a new parameterization of graph problems. In a multiple interval representation of a graph, each vertex is associated to at least one interval of the real line, with an edge between two vertices if and only if an interval associated to one vertex has a nonempty intersection with an interval associated to the other vertex. A graph on n vertices is a κ-gap interval graph if it has a multiple interval representation with at most n + κ intervals in total. In order to scale up the nice algorithmic properties of interval graphs (where κ = 0), we parameterize graph problems by κ, and find FPT algorithms for several problems, including Feedback Vertex Set, Dominating Set, Independent Set, Clique, Clique Cover, and Multiple Interval Transversal. The Coloring problem turns out to be [1]-hard and we design an XP algorithm for the recognition problem. © 2012 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
