For enhancing image contrast, global histogram equalization uses the histogram information of the entire input image for designing its transformation function. However, such global approach is suitable for overall enhancement, and it fails to adapt with the local image brightness features. In this paper, we present an effective method for image contrast enhancement that combines local information and global information. In local enhancement, we get multiple intensity mapping functions from the recursive mean-separate histogram equalization method. According to intensity level, we map different transformation functions to the center sub-block and its neighboring sub-blocks. This method is combined with unsharp masking to enhance the local detail of the image. Experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Mobile advertising refers to communication in which mobile phones are used as a medium to efficiently attract potential customers. Among mobile advertising applications, barcodes are becoming a very powerful mobile commerce tool. By capturing a barcode with a camera scanner, people can easily access a wealth of information online. Barcodes have thus converted hard copies of newspapers, wallpapers, and magazines into crucial platforms for mobile commerce. However, although barcodes are frequently used for embedding information in printed matter, they have unsightly overt patterns. Concealing data in visually meaningful image barcodes (such as trademarks) inst.ad of using extra barcode areas has the advantage of increasing the added value of using conventional barcode patterns, and thus it is desirable for future mobile advertising. This paper presents a novel data-hiding method for halftone images. Data-hiding and halftoning algorithms are integrated into the method to prevent extreme bi-level quantization in the halftoning process, for printing purposes. We first applied regular ordered dithering to divide the input continuous-tone image into discrete-parameter halftone cells. The hidden data message was embedded in the halftone cells by using a screen column-shift method. A modified direct binary search (DBS) optimization framework was then used to enhance the output image quality. Simulation results demonstrated that the proposed method outperformed a state-of-the-art method in terms of image quality and data capacity.

An unconditionally stable finite difference scheme for systems whose dynamics are described by a second-order partial differential equation is developed. The scheme is motivated by the well-known Crank-Nicolson discretization which was developed for first-order systems. The stability of the finite-difference scheme is analysed by von Neumann's method. Using the new scheme, a discrete in time and space model of a deformable mirror is derived as the basis for control law design. The convergence of this scheme for various values of the discretization parameters is checked by numerical simulations.

Real time in situ medical monitoring has become increasingly common in the past few decades, driven by the development of a wide variety of affordable sensors and power autonomous, energy efficient microcontroller platforms. Portable and unobtrusive multi-sensor data acquisition is considered routine, including real-time data processing and alerting based on measurements within or around the human body. Project MAIA has developed an intelligent baby cot system capable of monitoring sleeping infants and remotely notifying their carers under pre-programmed circumstances. It aims to add a layer of protection for infants during the first 6 months of their life, primarily targeting medical emergencies such as choking, suffocation and the elusive Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). The MAIA system also aims to contribute to current paediatric medical knowledge by providing rare in situ research data. Copyright 2014 ACM.

Large scale image understanding is drawing more and more attention from the researchers and industry. Inspired by the game theory and machine learning algorithm, this paper proposes a semantic dictionary to solve the key problem of visual polysemia and concept polymorphism in the large scale image understanding. The semantic dictionary characterizes the probability distribution between visual appearances and semantic concepts, and the learning of semantic dictionary is formulated into a minimization problem of the payoffs, where the players adjudge their strategies (i.e. the probability distribution) at each iteration. Non-convex multi-task learning is introduced to solve the above optimization problem. Finally, the wide applications of semantic dictionary are validated in our experiments, including the large scale semantic image search and image annotation.

This paper considers the problem of the compensation of an unknown dead zone in the input of a plant. A new compensation method is presented based on the estimation of an equivalent input disturbance (EID). Unlike other methods, this method does not require the exact information of a dead zone. First, we consider the dead zone as an input-dependent disturbance and employ an EID estimator to estimate it. Then, we incorporate the estimate in the control input and compensate the effect of the dead zone almost completely. Simulation results demonstrate the validity of the method. This paper describes the TALOS, which is an experimental system designed to test suitability of automatic vehicles to nearly autonomously (i.e. without constant human supervision) perform routine patrol duties for the Border Guard. The goal of the TALOS system is to test all the technical aspects of the idea of use of autonomous robots for routine patrols, and especially to answer the question is the today available technology adequate to make such autonomous automatic system technically feasible.

A key question for system testing of a software product is how to determine that the semantics of its requirements is adequately realized in the given implementation, or alternatively to find a series of concrete counter-examples demonstrating the violation of (a) particular requirement(s). An adequate test suite will aid in this determination. This paper formulates three types of requirements coverage criteria to establish the adequacy of a test suite. The suggested approach to system testing was validated in a number of medium and large size industrial projects. © 2011 Springer-Verlag.

This paper presents a novel action selection method for multi robot task sharing problem. Two autonomous mobile robots try to cooperate for push a box to a goal position. Both robots equipped with object and goal sensing, but do not have explicit communication ability. We explore the use of fuzzy signatures and decision making system to intention guessing and efficient action selection. Virtual reality simulation is used to build and test our proposed algorithm.
