From Watson-Crick L systems to Darwinian P systems

Watson-Crick L systems are language generating devices making use of Watson-Crick complementarity, a fundamental concept of DNA computing. These devices are Lindenmayer systems enriched with a trigger for complementarity transition: if a "bad" string is obtained, then the derivation continues with its complement which is always a "good" string. Membrane systems or P systems are distributed parallel computing models which were abstracted from the structure and the way of functioning of living cells. In this paper, we first interpret the results known about the computational completeness of Watson-Crick E0L systems in terms of membrane systems, then we introduce a related way of controlling the evolution in P systems, by using the triggers not in the operational manner (i.e., turning to the complement in a "bad" configuration), but in a "Darwinian" sense: if a "bad" configuration is reached, then the system "dies", that is, no result is obtained. The triggers (actually, the checkers) are given as finite state multiset automata. We investigate the computational power of these P systems. Their computational completeness is proved, even for systems with non-cooperative rules, working in the non-synchronized way, and controlled by only two finite state checkers;if the systems work in the synchronized mode, then one checker for each system suffices to obtain the computational completeness. © 2003 Kluwer Academic Publishers.

The relationship between cellular neural/nonlinear networks (CNNs) and partial differential equations (PDEs) is investigated. The equivalence between a discrete-space CNN model and a continuous-space PDE model is rigorously defined. The problem of the equivalence is split into two sub-problems: approximation and topological equivalence, that can be explicitly studied for any CNN models. It is known that each PDE can be approximated by a space difference scheme, i.e. a CNN model, that presents a similar dynamic behavior. It is shown, through examples, that there exist CNN models that are not equivalent to any PDEs, either because they do not approximate any PDE models, or because they have a different dynamic behavior (i.e. they are not topologically equivalent to the PDE, that approximate). This proves that the spatio-temporal CNN dynamics is broader than that described by PDEs.

Analysis of complex systems such as hierarchically structured network systems that are employed in modelling and analysis various aspects and issues of control and management in telecommunications is investigated. Theory of graphs and binary matrices appear to be most suitable tools for modelling the overall structure of complex systems, in general, and of systemic hierarchies, in particular. A systematic methodology has been developed for computer simulation analysis and detecting general hierarchies in communications networking as well as for synthesis of system hierarchies. This methodology is an improved extension of Warfield's technique. © 2001 EUCA.

The problem of the pricing equilibrium in multi-service priority-based networks isstudied by using Stackelberg game theory. Some concepts of the game theory were revisited first. Then, the existing results on two-user, twolevel Nash problem was reviewed briefly. Following this background, a new one-leader, two-level, two-user incentive Stackelberg strategy was derived and proved by employing the time delay involved.

In this paper the output-tracking problem of a class of composite nonlinear systems is studied. Composite system can be represented solely by models on the grounds of its inputs and measurable outputs. It is assumed that (i) the plant system belongs to aclass of composite non linear systems, and that the fuzzy logic control system applied can efficiently use adjustable parameters to approximate its non linear system function. The new theorem guarantees the synthesized indirect fuzzy adaptive control does ensure stable output tracking and possesses the ability to reduce the number of fuzzy rules.

The problem of networking supervision and traffic rate control in multi-service network systems is studied by using concepts of Nash equilibrium and Stackelberg strategy under assumption of two-level system architecture. Models of users, network provider and overall system in game-theoretic setting are presented. Linear Stackelberg incentive strategies are derived for both elastic and non-elastic traffic, and verified using Kelly's example. Outlines of the two-level integrated control and supervision architecture, and of the proposed fuzzy-Perti-net supervisor are given.

This paper proposes a genetic-based algorithm for surface reconstruction of three-dimension (3-D) objects from a group of contours representing its section plane lines. The algorithm can optimize the triangulation of the surface of 3-D objects with a multi-objective optimization function to meet the needs of a wide range of applications. Further, a new crossover operator for triangulation and a new 3-D quadrilateral mutation operator are also introduced.

A new design method for two-dimensional (2-D) recursive digital filters is investigated. The design of the 2-D filter is reduced to a constrained minimization problem the solution of which is achieved by the convergence of an appropriate Neural Network. An illustrative example is given and a comparison with the results of previous methods is attempted. Many advantages of the present method against.previous methods of the literature can be ascertained.

Efficient Window Block Retrieval in Quadtree-Based Spatial Databases

An algorithm is presented to answer window queries in a quadtree-based spatial database environment by retrieving all of the quadtree blocks in the underlying spatial database that cover the quadtree blocks that comprise the window. It works by decomposing the window operation into sub-operations over smaller window partitions. These partitions are the quadtree blocks corresponding to the window. Although a block b in the underlying spatial database may cover several of the smaller window partitions, b is only retrieved once rather than multiple times. This is achieved by using an auxiliary main memory data structure called the active border which requires O(n) additional storage for a window query of size n × n. As a result, the algorithm generates an optimal number of disk I/O requests to answer a window query (i.e., one request per covering quadtree block). A proof of correctness and an analysis of the algorithm's execution time and space requirements are given, as are some experimental results.

The cellular neural network Universal Machine (CNNUM) is applied to object-oriented image compression algorithms and proves its universality as a hardware platform for future applications. The estimated processing times allow a real-time analysis of the video sequence and outdo the performance of other comparable digital devices reported.
