Techniques such as genetic algorithms, simulated annealing and evolutionary programming constitute a discipline often referred to as computational intelligence. During the past decade, a number of computationally difficult problems in optimization have been solved reasonably well by application of these techniques. The authors' goal in the paper is to present a brief description of these techniques and consider some applications to engineering problems.< >
One missing link between CAD and CAM is the lack of a systematic methodology for generating and evaluating alternative ways to manufacture a proposed design. To address this problem, we are developing a systematic app...

An improved potential-based method for robot path planning is developed by connecting all the local minima and local maxima of the potential function defined in the configuration space of the robot. The authors construct an adjacency graph of the local minima and maxima of the potential function. An edge connecting a local minimum and a local maximum has an associated pair of perturbations which gives a way of moving between them. The method is based on the stability theory of dynamical systems. The usefulness of the method was demonstrated on a two-dimensional piano mover's problem with three degrees of freedom.< >
In this paper we give k-sets (k>-q+1) of the Hall planes with q-√q nuclei. This shows that the results of BICHARA - KORCHMÁROS [1] and WETTL [16] cannot be extended to non-desarguesian planes. We construct so...

Research of discrete event systems is strongly motivated by applications in flex ible manufacturing, in traffic control and in concurrent and real-time software verification and design, just to mention a few important areas. Discrete event system theory is a promising and dynamically developing area of both control theory and computerscience. Discrete event systems are systems with non-numerically-valued states, inputs, and outputs. The approaches to the modelling and control of these systems can be roughly divided into two groups. The first group is concerned with the automatic design of controllers from formal specifications of logical requirements. This re search owes much to the pioneering work of P.J. Ramadge and W.M. Wonham at the beginning of the eighties. The second group deals with the analysis and op timization of system throughput, waiting time, and other performance measures for discrete event systems. The present book contains selected papers presented at the Joint Workshop on Discrete Event Systems (WODES'92) held in Prague, Czechoslovakia, on Au gust 26-28, 1992 and organized by the inst.tute of Information Theory and Au tomation of the Czechoslovak Academy of sciences, Prague, Czechoslovakia, by the Automatic Control Laboratory of the Swiss Federal inst.tute of Technology (ETH) , Zurich, Switzerland, and by the Department of Computing science of the University of Groningen, Groningen, the Netherlands.
