Living in information society we spend a lot of time in front of visual display units such as comp.ter monitors or TV screens. This has positive as well as negative effects on our lives. Negative effects are mostly health related and one major concern is the increasing number of people affected by the comp.ter Vision Syndrome (CVS) [1], Most CVS-related problems can be avoided by suitable preventive actions, but the majority of comp.ter users ignore them. To help remedy the situation we present a prototype of a comp.ter vision system for real-time eye blink based detection of eye fatigue, which is a common symptom leading towards CVS. Our program records video of the user by a comp.ter monitor mounted web-camera, processes the frames and detects hazardous behaviour based on user s eye dynamics and blink patterns. Experimental results show that the proposed system is capable of detecting common cases of fatigued behaviour linked with long-term comp.ter use. We believe regular use of the proposed system could significantly reduce the CVS symptoms for long-time comp.ter workers. However, the techniques used can also be applied to other similar applications, such as driver fatigue detection, human-comp.ter interaction, etc.

A modification to the fuzzy connectedness image segmentation is presented. Through checking the property affinity between the seed pixel and the pixel along the optimal path which has the largest fuzzy connectedness from the pixel to seed pixel, good results can be achieved, especially for those objects with blurred boundary. Additionally, an image-scanning mechanism algorithm for detecting optimal paths is proposed to calculate the fuzzy connectedness between pixels and the seed pixel one by one. This algorithm can make full use of the properties of fuzzy connectedness and property affinity, and detect the optimal path between two pixels effectively. Experimental examples show that the new method is simple, fast, and works well for some images.

This contribution presents a video analysis system which provides automatic content analysis and enables manual and semi-automatic annotation. In particular, we focus on object recognition and visual video indexing. We briefly review the current state of the art based on interest point extraction (e.g. Harris points, Maximally Stable Extremal Regions) and calculation of invariant descriptors around these points (e.g. SIFT, differential invariants). The main challenge for recognition from videos is the efficiency due to the huge size of the database. We will illustrate these concepts on the recently started project, TheoMedia (joint work between TU Graz, Joanneum Research and inst.tute for Fundamental Theology at KFU Graz) where we use recognition and indexing technology for analyzing films in order to find religious symbols. The goal of the project is to use all the available information retrieval technology to substantially speed up the analysis process.

We consider the generalized assignment problem in which the objective is to find a minimum cost assignment of a set of jobs to a set of agents subject to resource constraints. The presented new approach is based on a previously published, successful hybrid genetic algorithm and includes as new features two alternative initialization heuristics, a modified selection and replacement scheme for handling infeasible solutions more appropriately, and a heuristic mutation operator. Tests are performed on standard test inst.nces from the literature and on newly created, larger and more difficult inst.nces. The presented genetic algorithm with its two initialization variants is comp.red to the previous genetic algorithm and to the commercial general purpose branch-and-cut system CPLEX. Results indicate that CPLEX is able to solve relatively large inst.nces of the general assignment problem to provable optimality. For the largest and most difficult inst.nces, however, the proposed genetic algorithm yields on average the best results in shortest time.

In this paper the author wants to engross his thesis according to a project he is working for. The use of generic and generative methods for the development and application of interactive educational software is a relatively unexplored area in industry and education. Advantages of generic and generative techniques are, among other things, the high degree of reusability of systems parts and the reduction of development costs. Furthermore, generative methods can be used for the development or realization of novel learning models. In this paper, we discuss such a learning model that propagates a new way of explorative learning in comp.ter science education with the help of generators. A realization of this model represents the educational software GANIFA on the theory of generating finite automata from regular expressions. In addition to the educational system's description, we present an evaluation of this system.
