We report on using comp.ted tomography (CT) as a model acquisition tool for comp.ex objects in comp.ter graphics. Unlike other modeling and scanning techniques the comp.exity of the object is irrelevant in CT, which naturally enables to model objects with, for example, concavities, holes, twists or fine surface details. Once the data is scanned, one can apply post-processing techniques for data enhancement, modification or presentation. For demonstration purposes we chose to scan a Christmas tree which exhibits high comp.exity which is difficult or even impossible to handle with other techniques. However, care has to be taken to achieve good scanning results with CT. Further, we illustrate post-processing by means of data segmentation and photorealistic as well as non-photorealistic surface and volume rendering techniques.
This paper introduces importance-driven volume rendering as a novel technique for automatic focus and context display of volumetric data. Our technique is a generalization of cut-away views, which - depending on the v...

The Earth is still rather "flat". Therefore geographic data still tend to be two-dimensional and are stored in 2-dimensional information systems. But we do live in a three-dimensional world. In technical systems, the 3rd dimension has long been merely an attribute of 2-dimensional graphical data. This is subject to rapid change. Three-dimensional models of the human habitat are emerging. The required tools to create and use such models are the topic of the paper. This is at the intersection of comp.ter graphics and comp.ter vision and reflects a recent trend in comp.ter science, where vision and graphics increasingly tend to meet. The paper discusses procedures for a fully automated creation of 3-dimensional models of today's buildings and cities, but also of interior spaces, even of microscopic worlds and of the lost cities of the antique. Methods will be described, but also their performance, accuracies, limitations and costs, to better understand what it takes to create and use a "virtual habitat".

This paper intends to generalize given techniques in modeling semantic content according to the purpose of transferring them from industrial application scenarios to the requirements of design for all. User groups like deaf people assimilate information in a different manner than hearing ones. In [1] several requirements of deaf users of information visualization are described as a basis for barrier free technology. In this paper the author wants to engross his thesis according to a project he is working for. In the project WIDE [2] two user groups - designers and engineers in industrial product design and development - have different views on the search results according their needs and interests. WIDE is an EU-funded project (IST-2001-34417).

Digital Reconstruction Radiography (DRR) is an important technique in radiotherapy imaging applications. DRR volume rendering aims at rendering DRR images using CT or other tomographic data sets. In addition to the appropriate optical model, the interactive and realistic DRR imaging depends mainly on an accurate attenuation coefficient transfer function, which is usually a piecewise function, and an interactive rendering algorithm with reasonable rendering quality. In this paper, we first present a realistic DRR transfer function based on the mass attenuation coefficient comp.sition. Then, we introduce an object space DRR rendering algorithm, DRR splatting in the sheared object space. The DRR image qualities under different rendering algorithms are comp.red, including ray casting, Fourier volume rendering, projective shear-warp and splatting shear-warp. Finally, a line encoding technique is adopting to accelerate DRR rendering.

This paper presents the optical tracking solution developed in the ArcheoGuide project (The Augmented Reality based Cultural Heritage On-site GUIDE, IST-1999-11306). The system enables to recover precisely the user head position and orientation at predetermined viewing location without the support of markers. The tracking approach is novel and bases on the real-time registration of the live video-image with so called "reference images" of the site. Once the matching between a live- and a reference-images could have been established, the virtual information can be presented correctly to the user, either using a 2D image warping transformation or after deduction of the current 3D position/orientation of the camera. The image matching algorithm represents the core of the tracking system. It must have real-time performance and be particulary robust to intensity and local changes. We opted for an analysis in frequency space and exploit the invariance properties of the Mellin-Fouricr transform. The tracking system has been tested outdoor in the context of the Archeoguide project. It runs on a laptop at around 10 to 15 Hz and provides views of virtual monuments in a Head Mounted Display superposed to the ruins of the archaeological site.

Visualization of tubular structures such as blood vessels is an important topic in medical imaging. One way to display tubular structures for diagnostic purposes is to generate longitudinal cross-sections in order to show their lumen, wall, and surrounding tissue in a curved plane. This process is called Curved Planar Reformation (CPR). We present three different methods to generate CPR images. A tube-phantom was scanned with comp.ted Tomography (CT) to illustrate the properties of the different CPR methods. Furthermore we introduce enhancements to these methods: thick-CPR, rotating-CPR and multi-path-CPR.

Present-day technical infrastructures and appliances provide aplenty of opportunities for simplifying and supporting the everyday life. However, many of the systems available today - such as typical feature loaded multimedia or infotainment systems - are not always efficiently usable for the average person. This paper presents a planning-based approach to helping the user to control such comp.ex infrastructures. It describes the architectural concept, which makes it possible to integrate classical Artificial Intelligence technology - such as planning and scheduling - into the domain of networked consumer appliances, like multimedia systems and room control. Especially, we concentrate on the architectural concepts, which allows us to create systems that can be extended dynamically and that are not build by a single vendor.

Living in information society we spend a lot of time in front of visual display units such as comp.ter monitors or TV screens. This has positive as well as negative effects on our lives. Negative effects are mostly health related and one major concern is the increasing number of people affected by the comp.ter Vision Syndrome (CVS) [1], Most CVS-related problems can be avoided by suitable preventive actions, but the majority of comp.ter users ignore them. To help remedy the situation we present a prototype of a comp.ter vision system for real-time eye blink based detection of eye fatigue, which is a common symptom leading towards CVS. Our program records video of the user by a comp.ter monitor mounted web-camera, processes the frames and detects hazardous behaviour based on user s eye dynamics and blink patterns. Experimental results show that the proposed system is capable of detecting common cases of fatigued behaviour linked with long-term comp.ter use. We believe regular use of the proposed system could significantly reduce the CVS symptoms for long-time comp.ter workers. However, the techniques used can also be applied to other similar applications, such as driver fatigue detection, human-comp.ter interaction, etc.

This paper presents an efficient volume measurement method for quantitative assessments within a virtual liver surgery planning system. The measurement is carried out by hardware-accelerated voxelization of surface-based models in order to be applicable for interactive applications. The focus of this paper is the presentation of our voxelization technique suitable for off-the-shelf PC graphics cards including two different data retrieval approaches. Moreover, the measurement can be performed off-screen while not disturbing the rest of the application. Another important issue discussed in this paper is the applicability study within the planning system. Our measurement toolkit has been applied on several medical objects and delivers interactive response times.
