When using deformable models for the segmentation of biological data, the choice of the best weighting parameters for the internal and external forces is crucial. Especially when dealing with 3D fluorescence microscopic data and cells within dense tissue, object boundaries are sometimes not visible. In these cases, one weighting parameter set for the whole contour is not desirable. We are presenting a method for the dynamic adjustment of the weighting parameters, that is only depending on the underlying data and does not need any prior information. The method is especially apt to handle blurred, noisy, and deficient data, as it is often the case in biological microscopy. © 2010 IEEE.

The correct simulation and visualisation of textiles comprises many research fields such as mathematics, physics, materials science, and computer graphics. It consists of modelling the physical behaviour of textiles based on real data of garment patterns which have to be placed around an avatar. Therefore efficient numerical algorithms have to be developed to solve the appearing differential equations. Finally the obtained results are displayed photorealistically). The aim of the national research project "Virtual Try-On" consists in providing a prototype of a virtual try-on scenario in a real shop or the internet realizing cost-efficient made-tomeasure wear. In this article we present the whole process chain from the choice of clothes up to the final visualisation and the individual evaluation of fit. © 2005 Emerald Group Publishing Limited.

We consider minimal-perimeter lattice animals, providing a set of conditions which are sufficient for a lattice to have the property that inflating all minimal-perimeter animals of a certain size yields (without repetitions) all minimal-perimeter animals of a new, larger size. We demonstrate this result on the two-dimensional square and hexagonal lattices. In addition, we characterize the sizes of minimal-perimeter animals on these lattices that are not created by inflating members of another set of minimal-perimeter animals. © 2022, CC BY.

We consider the separability of two point sets inside a polygon by means of chords or geodesic lines. Specifically, given a set of red points and a set of blue points in the interior of a polygon, we provide necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a chord and for the existence of a geodesic path which separate the two sets;when they exist we also derive efficient algorithms for their obtention. We study as well the separation of the two sets using a minimum number of pairwise non-crossing chords.

Gating is a very important technique of data association. Creating an excellent gate algorithm, which could efficiently decrease the number of extraneous returns falling within the gate, can improve the data association accuracy and decrease the computation complexity. Hence, a novel tracking gate algorithm is presented. The main feature of our method is to estimate the size of gate by calculating the optimal solution of an appraising function of the performance of the data association algorithm. A comparison of our method to classical methods demonstrates that our algorithm is superior to these methods, especially in a heavy clutter and false alarm environment.

Vehicle occupants that are out-of-position can be deadly injured by the deployment of the air bag in a crash situation. In recent years many different sensors and systems have been proposed to detect the type of occupant and the position of the occupant's head. This paper presents a method for classification and occupant's head detection based on passive stereo vision. The proposed system uses depth surface analysis and scene statistics together with support vector machines for classification and selection of head candidates. Evaluation of the method shows 99% correct for classification and 98% correct for head detection, using large sets of image data, and image sequences recorded in a driving vehicle.

This paper presents two new region-based active contour models in a variation framework for image segmentation. In these models, to quantify the similarity measurement between two regions, we propose to compare their respective cumulative histograms with the L 1 ,L 2 ,L ∞ distances which are often applied in image comparison. For example, to compute the similarity, the KolmogorovSmirnov test by using the L ∞ distance is the most popular one. Our first energy model is based on minimizing Lv distance between two cumulative histograms of different regions, together with a geometric regulation term that penalizes the length of region boundaries. The second model is the localization of the first model with the popular local method. To solve these models, we describe a fast minimization algorithm with the Split-Bregman method, which can find the global minimizer. Finally, to illustrate the robust and accurate segmentations with the proposed models, we show some experimental results on some images.

The most strings with few bad columns problem is an NP-hard combinatorial optimization problem from the bioinformatics field. This paper presents the first integer linear programming model for this problem. Moreover, a simple greedy heuristic and a more sophisticated extension, namely a greedy-based pilot method, are proposed. Experiments show that, as expected, the greedy-based pilot method improves over the greedy strategy. For problem inst.nces of small and medium size the best results were obtained by solving the integer linear programming model by CPLEX, while the greedy-based pilot methods scales much better to large problem inst.nces.

In the last decade, Fourier volume rendering (FVR) has obtained considerable attention due to its O(N/sup 2/logN) rendering complexity, where O(N/sup 3/) is the volume size. Although ordinary volume rendering has O(N/sup 3/) rendering complexity, it is still preferred over FVR for the main reason, that FVR offers bad localization of spatial structures. As a consequence, it was assumed, that it is hardly possible to apply ID transfer functions, which arbitrarily modify voxel values not only in dependence of the position, but also the voxel value. We show that this assumption is not true for threshold operators. Based on the theory of Fourier series, we derive a FVR method, which is capable of integrating all sample points greater (or alternatively, lower) than an iso-value T during rendering, where T can be modified interactively during the rendering session. We compare our method with other approaches and we show examples on well-known datasets to illustrate the quality of the renderings.
