This paper presents solutions to some problems in real-time video surveillance system such as robust object detection in illumination mutation situation and merge/split event in multi-target tracking. We propose a new moving object detection approach. Our approach can handle the problems result from illumination sudden changes in real scene by combining Gaussian Mixture Model algorithm with temporal frame difference. For multi-target tracking, we use Mean Shift algorithm and introduce a "record" strategy to handle targets merge and split. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed approach. © 2009 Copyright SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering.

This paper focuses on preprocessing methods for the infrared images. Due to noises, low contrast and local difference of materials, Forward-looking Infrared targets have a great difference of local gray levels. Such different gray levels add the difficulty of targets detection and may lead a decrease in accuracy and rate of detection in Gray-based template matching. To overcome the difficulty, we present a novel preprocessing method based on non-subsampled contourlet transform (NSCT) which is good at multi-direction and multi-scale. This method firstly do Non-subsampled contourlet transform to infrared images. The level of decomposition is decided by the size of the template which is considered as the basic structure and the directions of decomposition are chosen by the imaging angles. Then we reconstruct the image according to the coefficients of the decomposition. Experiments based on template matching in forward-looking infrared images show that the proposed preprocessing method based on NSCT can significantly improve the detection rate (DR) and the stability. Experimental results also show that our proposed method has better performance than some other preprocessing methods. © 2009 Copyright SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering.

This paper presents an implementation of a real-time video surveillance system based on TMS320DM6437 DVDP (Digital Video Development Platform). We propose an improved motion detection method based on adaptive Gaussian Mixture Model. In tracking module, association matrix is built between two frames for targets association according to a kind of cost function of features. Besides, Mean Shift algorithm is used to predict targets' parameters, so target tracking can be maintained in the case of short-term loss. In the test scene, the system shows a satisfactory performance. © 2009 Copyright SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering.

Correlation match is widely used in the field of target recognition for its stability and adaptability, but traditional correlation matching does not meet the demand for real time performance. For this reason, this paper presents an improved recursive pyramid correlation image matching algorithm and accomplishes the algorithm's parallel implementation on Multi-DSPs interconnected by FPGA with using several effective optimization strategies. Moreover, we design detailed experiments which give a comparison of different matching speed using optimization methods step by step. The results prove that our system is the best optimum with high efficiency compared with conventional methods. © 2009 Copyright SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering.

In this paper, the joint distribution of the Nonsubsampled Contourlet Transform coefficients is studied. It is found that the estimation of the joint distribution is implement impossible due to the complex of joint empirical distribution function and dependence of NSCT coefficient vector components. To distinguish different joint distributions of different images, the sample covariance matrix feature is proposed. The texture retrieval experiment is conducted in order to evaluate the performance of the sample covariance matrix feature. The result shows that the proposed feature is efficient in representing the texture and the difference of the joint distribution of the Nonsubsampled Contourlet Transform coefficients. © 2009 Copyright SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering.

Modulation Classification Based on Spectrogram

The aim of modulation classification (MC) is to identify the modulation type of a communication signal. It plays an important role in many cooperative or noncooperative communication applications. Three spectrogram-based modulation classification methods are proposed. Their reccgnition scope and performance are investigated or evaluated by theoretical analysis and extensive simulation studies. The method taking moment-like features is robust to frequency offset while the other two, which make use of principal component analysis (PCA) with different transformation inputs,can achieve satisfactory accuracy even at low SNR (as low as 2 dB). Due to the properties of spectrogram, the statistical pattern recognition techniques, and the image preprocessing steps, all of our methods are insensitive to unknown phase and frequency offsets, timing errors, and the arriving sequence of symbols.

Global Motion Estimation with Gabor Wavelet Transform

A novel algorithm of global motion estimation is proposed. First, through Gabor wavelet transform (GWT), a kind of energy distribution of image is obtained and checkpoints are selected according to a probability decision approach proposed. Then, the initialized motion vectors are obtained via a hierarchal block-matching based on these ***, by employing a 3-parameter motion model, precise parameters of global motion are found. From the experiment, the algorithm is reliable and robust.

Fully-supervised learning requires expensive and laborious annotations of labeled data for crowd-counting tasks. To alleviate this burden, it is desirable to explore methods that reduce the need for extensive labeling. Fortunately, there are a vast number of unlabeled images available in the world, making them easily accessible compared to labeled datasets. This paper proposes a self-supervised learning-based M-CNN framework with an attention mechanism that aims to leverage unlabeled data for pre-training the model. The framework consists of four sub-modules: a data augmentation framework, a self-supervised training network, a multi-column CNN, and an attention mechanism. These networks receive the images that undergo random processing using two defined augmentation transformations. Transformed images are then subjected to self-supervised learning and fed to a feature extraction network. FEN consists of M-CNN with five convolutional branches to extract features at a multi-scale level. These extracted features are then employed as an attention mechanism to focus on the head or shoulder location of people. To evaluate the effectiveness of our proposed model, experiments are conducted on two public datasets: ShanghaiTech Part A, Part B, and UCFQNRF. The experimental results demonstrate that our approach outperforms state-of-the-art semi-supervised methods, showcasing the effectiveness of our proposed approach in leveraging both unlabeled and limited labeled data for crowd counting tasks.

We present an algorithm for infrared target recognition based on edge features, aiming to improve the performance of recognition within low contrast and low SNR infrared images. The main process including: using nonlinear anisotropic diffusion equation to smooth noise as preprocessing after enhancing the image contrast through equalizing the image gray-level histogram, so as to filter out noise as well as maintain edge and shape features;then considering the greater differences between the target template and the fragmentary edges extracted directly from infrared images, Otsu threshold segmentation algorithm is selected to extracted the region feature before we use Canny operator to extract target edge features;finally, we match the target edge template with infrared images to recognize the target, using Hausdorff distance as a matching measure. Through experiment on several infrared image sequences, the results show that comparing with other preprocessing algorithms, our method achieve better performance for target recognition. © 2009 Copyright SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering.

Car plate detection is a key component in automatic license plate recognition system. This paper adopts an enhanced cascaded tree style learner framework for car plate detection using the hybrid object features including the simple statistical features and Harr-like features. The statistical features are useful for simplifying the process on cascade classifier. The cascaded tree-style detector design will further reduce the false alarm and the false dismissal while retaining a high detection ratio. The experimental results obtained by the proposed algorithm exhibit the encouraging performance. © 2006 IEEE.
