In the field of cranio-maxillofacial surgery, there is a huge demand from surgeons to be able to automatically predict the post-operative face appearance in terms of a pre-specified bone-remodeling plan. Collision detection is a promising means to achieve this simulation. In this paper, therefore, an efficient collision detection method based on a new 3D signed distance field algorithm is proposed to accurately detect the contact positions and compute the penetration depth with the moving of the bones in the simulation, and thus the contact force between the bones and the soft tissues can be estimated using penalty methods. Thereafter, a nonlinear finite element model is employed to compute the deformation of the soft tissue model. The performance of the proposed collision detection algorithm has been improved in memory requirements and computational efficiency against the conventional methods. In addition, the proposed approach has the superior convergence characteristics against other methods. Therefore, the usage of the collision detection method can effectively assist surgeons in automatically predicting the pos-operative face outline.

New Method of Reconstruction from Nonparallel Stereo and Application to Surgical Navigator

A new method to reconstruct 3D scene points from nonparallel stereo is proposed. From a pair of conjugate images in an arbitrarily configured stereo system that has been calibrated, coordinates of 3D scene points can be computed directly using the method, bypassing the process of rectifying images or iterative solution involved in existing methods. Experiment results from both simulated data and real images validate the method. Practical application to surgical navigator shows that the method has advantages to improve efficiency and accuracy of 3D reconstruction from nonparallel stereo system in comparison with the conventional method that employs algorithm for standard parallel axes stereo geometry.

Model of federated evidence fusion for real-time urban traffic state estimation

In order to make full use of heterogeneous multi-sensor data to serve urban intelligent transportation systems, a real-time urban traffic state fusion model was proposed, named federated evidence fusion model. The model improves conventional D-S evidence theory in temporal domain, such that it can satisfy the requirement of real-time processing and utilize traffic detection information more efficaciously. The model frame and computation al procedures are given. In addition, a generalized reliability weight matrix of evidence is also presented to increase the accuracy of estimation. After that, a simulation test is presented to explain the advantage of the proposed method in comparison with conventional D-S evidence theory. Besides, the validity of the model is proven by the use of the data of loop detectors and GPS probe vehicles collected from an urban link in Shanghai. Results of the experiment show that the proposed approach can well embody and track traffic state at character level in real-time conditions.

This paper discussed the reliability of computing the road link speed from probe vehicles. An algorithm for the smallest probe vehicle sampling sizes for traffic flow estimation was proposed. Many factors are considered, such as road style, road link speed and information transmit period of probe vehicle. The field testing using traffic data of Xuhui district in Shanghai presents a good result which validates the effecfiveness of the new model.

This paper discussed a novel segmentation algorithm B-JSEG for color images based on color information and region growing. This method is proposed on the base of JSEG, a popular method in segmentation of color images, and directional operators for edge detection in images. Compared with other methods existed, new parameters are used to characterize the property of color-texture images in the proposed method. With the aim of alleviating over-segmentation, directional operators are integrated into the JSEG method to take account of both homogeneity and discontinuity in regions. It is shown from the experiments on large amounts of images that the proposed method is robust and able to match better with human's perception than JSEG.

Aiming at the characters of weak and small targets in infrared images, an algorithm based on Least Squares Support Vector Machines (LS-SVM) is presented to fuse long-wave and mid-wave infrared images and detect targets. image intensity surfaces for the neighborhood of every pixel of the original long-wave infrared image and mid-wave infrared are well-fitted by mapped LS-SVM respectively. And long-wave and mid-wave infrared image gradient images are obtained by LS-SVM based on radial basis kernels function. Fusion rule is set up according to the features of gradient images. At last, segment fused image and targets can be detected with contrast threshold. Compared with wavelet fusion detection algorithm and morphological fusion detection algorithm, when a target is affected by baits, the experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach in the paper based on LS-SVM to fuse and detect weak and small target is reliable and efficient.

In this paper, we propose a matching method for remote sensing images based on corner structures. Firstly corner angle vector is defined to analysis corner structure, and the process of how to obtain it is discussed in detail. Then some measures are given to eliminate the false corners. Finally a relaxation matching scheme is presented. The experiments show the effectiveness and feasibility of our matching method.

In accordance with the outer skin and model segmentation issues in simulated plastic surgery, a simplified axis extraction method based on active window was proposed. The new method simplifies the M-Reps by using priori shape information of regions. It is applied to the segmentation of outer skin and model in the plastic surgery simulation. The results show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Nonlinear image enhancement algorithm based on single scale retinex

A nonlinear image enhancement algorithm based on single scale retinex was proposed. Unlike classical retinex methods estimate the illumination image in a complex way, the proposed algorithm estimates the illumination image approximately, and then compensates the approximate estimation in a nonlinear way. Compared with classical retinex methods, the experimental results show that the proposed method can offer better performance not only in visual enhancement but also in fast processing.
