Physics-Informed Machine Learning for Power Grid Frequency Modeling

The operation of power systems is affected by diverse technical, economic, and social factors. Social behavior determines load patterns, electricity markets regulate the generation, and weather-dependent renewables introduce power fluctuations. Thus, power system dynamics must be regarded as a nonautonomous system whose parameters vary strongly with time. However, the external driving factors are usually only available on coarse scales and the actual dependencies of the dynamic system parameters are generally unknown. Here, we propose a physics-informed machine learning model that bridges the gap between large-scale drivers and short-term dynamics of the power system. Integrating stochastic differential equations and artificial neural networks, we construct a probabilistic model of the power grid frequency dynamics in continental Europe. Its probabilistic prediction outperforms the daily average profile, which is an important benchmark, on a time horizon of 15 min. Using the integrated model, we identify and explain the parameters of the dynamical system from the data, which reveal their strong time-dependence and their relation to external drivers such as wind power feed-in and fast generation ramps. Finally, we generate synthetic time series from the model, which successfully reproduce central characteristics of the grid frequency such as their heavy-tailed distribution. All in all, our work emphasizes the importance of modeling power system dynamics as a stochastic nonautonomous system with both intrinsic dynamics and external drivers.

Nowadays, the heterogeneous network and devices of IoT become more complex and encountered several challenges. The investigations of social networks show that social network analysis methods are useful for the evolution and development of communication and social network models allow solving Internet- related problems. And they can provide more exact answers for complex problems. This article analyzes some methods of SNA and investigated compatible methods to apply in IoT.

Vision system-based inspection and alignment of laminated polymer films for 3D-Integration of microsystems

The SMARTLAM project proposes a new paradigm of modular, flexible, scalable 3D-Integration (3D-I) scenarios for 3D manufacturing of microsystems out of laminated polymer films. During the integration of discrete parts and laminated polymer sheets, a fast and precise vision system is needed to inspect the top layer of functional elements and align laminated films. A pattern matching vision approach is implemented in this project to assure production quality and detect faults between production processes and/or at the end. The system’s key hardware components are a high-resolution line camera system and an X/Y/Z-axis system for positioning setup. The software architecture of the inspection module builds on a plugin like structure, based on software design pattern criterion, in order to facilitate fast adaptation of algorithms for new updates of manufacturing requirements. The results demonstrate the high ability of the developed vision system to accurately detect features and defects of the laminated polymer films for layers alignments and assurance of in-process and final quality.

Macro-energy system modelling is used by decision-makers to steer the global energy transition toward an affordable, sustainable and reliable future. Closed-source models are the current standard for most policy and industry decisions. However, open models have proven to be competitive alternatives that promote science, robust technical analysis, collaboration and transparent policy decision making. Yet, two issues slow the adoption: open models are often designed with limited geographic scope, hindering synergies to collaborate, or are based on low spatially resolved data, limiting their use. Here we introduce PyPSA-Earth, the first open-source global energy system model with data in high spatial and temporal resolution. It enables large-scale collaboration by providing a tool that can model the world energy system or any subset of it. This work is derived from the European PyPSA-Eur model using new data and functions. It is suitable for operational as well as combined generation, storage and transmission expansion studies. The model provides two main features: (1) customizable data extraction and preparation scripts with global coverage and (2) a PyPSA energy modelling framework integration. The data includes electricity demand, generation and medium to high-voltage networks from open sources, yet additional data can be further integrated. A broad range of clustering and grid meshing strategies help adapt the model to computational and practical needs. A data validation for the entire African continent is performed and the optimization features are tested with a 2060 net-zero planning study for Nigeria. The demonstration shows that the presented developments can build a highly detailed energy system model for energy planning studies to support policy and technical decision-making. We anticipate that PyPSA-Earth can represent an open reference model and we welcome to join forces to address the challenges of the energy transition together. © 2022, CC BY-NC-ND.

Different challenges due to the energy transition lead to higher loadings of the existing grid infrastructure in the transmission grid as well as in the distribution grids. The consequences are increasing costs for grid expansion, redispatch and curtailment in the German grids. Therefore, different new technologies and approaches aiming at a better utilization of grid infrastructure are actually proposed and realized: in this light, this paper gives a literature review and summary of the state of research concerning planned or applied technologies to optimize grid operation. Thereafter, this paper provides a comprehensive overview of the German transmission and distribution grid infrastructure utilization based on simulations as well as on real measurements. Theoretical potentials and thus unused capacities are discussed. Requirements and challenges in the field of information and communication technology, automated grid operation, monitoring the current grid state, and control concepts are discussed.

In this paper some implementation aspects of the continuous-time stabilizing model predictive control (MPC) based on B-spline functions are addressed. Specifically, two problems are discussed: (a) suitable parametrization of control variables and (b) intersample satisfaction of constraints. The proposed solution relies on B-spline functions parametrization of the control variable during a continuous-time cost function minimization. The close relation between B-spline curves and their control polygons is utilized for the intersample satisfaction of constraints. Stability of the closed-loop system is standardly ensured through a quasi-infinite horizon approach by means of a terminal cost, a terminal constraint set, and an auxiliary (local) controller.

Manipulated energy metering devices lead not only to severe economic damages, they also can directly lead to unfortunate decisions concerning stable grid operation, especially for Smart Grids of the future with less and less rotating inertia and more and more volatile infeed of renewables. For this reason, we propose in the present paper a new manipulation detection method using Super State Hidden Markov Models (SSHMMs) in combination with an additional central metering device. The proposed new method does not only allow the detection of the manipulation of the Smart Meters, but additionally infers which meters are most likely manipulated. Thus, the new method is able to detect attacks on the grid and to pinpoint the manipulated devices, enabling the network provider to initiate further counteractions. The accuracy and effectiveness of the new method are shown by its application to a distribution grid example. It is ready-to-use for network providers of classical distribution grids.

Minimization of energy functionals is based on a discretization by the finite element method and optimization by the trust-region method. A key tool to an efficient implementation is a local evaluation of the approximated gradients together with sparsity of the resulting Hessian matrix. The most frequent research methods applied in various areas of scientific research are computer modelling and numerical simulation. The trend of using finite element method (FEM) gradually replaces classical methods of exploring phenomena. The method is suitable for investigating technical phenomena in the field of construction, mechanics and strength, as well as in other disciplines. Its suitability for the area of strength will be demonstrated in the current paper which presents solutions to various embeddings of a beam under bend. The beam was loaded with an external uniformly distributed load q(x) along its entire length. The research aim was to determine the maximum load and maximum deflection of the beam depending on the beam position and the material used. The beam under bend was selected as the most commonly used structural element. Analytical solution to bending moment and displacement forces is suitable for simple beam loads. Modelling and numerical simulations provide solution to complex problems and different load variations, while identifying changes in material properties of the structural element under consideration. The results are then evaluated and judged on the basis of the maximum strength of the structural material, while meeting the safety condition of the maximum load or maximum deflection. Modelling via FEM is a flexible research method applicable in all research areas. © 2018 Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

Current in vivo microscopy allows us detailed spatiotemporal imaging (3D+t) of complete organisms and offers insights into their development on the cellular level. Even though the imaging speed and quality is steadily improving, fullyautomated segmentation is often not accurate enough in lowsignal image regions. This is particularly true while imaging large samples (100 μm -1 mm) and deep inside the specimen. Drosophila embryogenesis, widely used as a developmental paradigm, presents an example for such a challenge, especially where cell outlines need to imaged - a general challenge in other systems as well. To deal with the current bottleneck in analyzing quantitatively the 3D+t light-sheet microscopy images of Drosophila embryos, we developed a collection of semi-automatic open-source tools. The presented methods include a semi-automatic masking procedure, automatic projection of non-convex 3D isosurfaces to 2D representations as well as cell segmentation and tracking.
