(Big) Data analysis techniques are able to mine hidden correlations in data sets and/or data streams. Based on identified correlations, a causality analysis can generate new knowledge about happenings in a digitalised environment such as in smart manufacturing systems. Such knowledge can be suitable for further exploitation e.g. in system observation, diagnosis or optimization. However - in general, (Big) Data analysis of complex systems needs highly trained data scientists and application domain experts to define objectives and to perform the analysis of the data (streams). One research objective in smart manufacturing is the unification and provision of semantical meta data which describe structures, abilities, specifications, life-cycle information, etc. of a cyber-physical system (CPS), enrichable with dynamic context information (as the current location of a mobile CPS). This work describes an approach to use such meta-data and (dynamic) context data to support the data preparation phase (search, filter, select and prepare data (streams)) through a semantical supported CPS Data Marketplace. © 2018 IEEE.

The operation of power systems has become more challenging due to feed-in of volatile renewable energy sources. Chance-constrained optimal power flow (ccOPF) is one possibility to explicitly consider volatility via probabilistic uncertainties resulting in mean-optimal feedback policies. These policies are computed before knowledge of the realization of the uncertainty is available. On the other hand, the hypothetical case of computing the power injections knowing every realization beforehand - called in-hindsight OPF (hOPF) - cannot be outperformed w.r.t. costs and constraint satisfaction. In this paper, we investigate how CCOPF feedback relates to the full-information HOPF. To this end, we introduce different dimensions of the price of uncertainty. Using mild assumptions on the uncertainty we present sufficient conditions when ccOPF is identical to hOPF. We suggest using the total variational distance of probability densities to quantify the performance gap of hOPF and CCOPF. Finally, we draw upon a tutorial example to illustrate our results.

In case of light aircrafts, in uncontrolled airspace the navigation and the air traffic monitoring is the responsibility of the pilot. Navigation and driving of the airplane simultaneously amongst complicated meteorological conditions means intensified load from the viewpoint of the pilot, even with the continuous support of the flight information service. Recently several applications are developed to support navigation tasks. Despite their obvious utility, according to our experiences, they are usually solving only some specific problems. Therefore, improvement of auxiliary navigational applications and their services is still actual and important topic. In our paper several algorithms and applications are presented to emulate classic IFR (Instruments Flight Rules) instruments on the basis of the commercially available GPS (Global Positioning System) service, which were developed on different platforms at the institute of Instrumentation and automation [1] [2] [3]. © 2018 IEEE.

Dispatchability of renewable energy sources and inflexible loads can be achieved using a volatility-compensating energy storage. However, as the future power outputs of the inflexible devices are uncertain, the computation of a dispatch schedule for such aggregated systems is non-trivial. In the present paper, we propose a novel scheduling method that enforces the feasibility of the dispatch schedule with a pre-determined probability based on a description of the operation of the system as a two-stage decision process. Thereby, a crucial point is the use of probabilistic forecasts, in terms of cumulative density function, of the inflexible energy consumption/production profile. Then, for the sake of comparison, we introduce a second scheduling method based on state-of-the-art scenario optimization, where, unlike the proposed method, the focus is on the minimization of the expected final cost. We draw upon simulations based on real consumption and production data to compare the methods and illustrate our findings. Copyright © 2018, The Authors. All rights reserved.

This paper compares the quality of standardly used ON-LINE identification algorithms like directional forgetting and regularized exponential forgetting with the hybrid algorithm of exponential forgetting with an alternative covariance matrix. It points also to the behavior of selected algorithms in different deployment conditions and different run times. Particularly interesting is the long-run deployment, which correlates with use in industry. Based on the results obtained, decisions will be taken about the suitability of the hybrid regularized exponential forgetting algorithm with an alternative covariance matrix for selected industrial deployment scenarios. © 2018 Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava. A generalized framework for chance-constrained optimal power flow

Deregulated energy markets, demand forecasting, and the continuously increasing share of renewable energy sources call-among others-for a structured consideration of uncertainties in optimal power flow problems. The main challenge is to guarantee power balance while maintaining economic and secure operation. In the presence of Gaussian uncertainties affine feedback policies are known to be viable options for this task. The present paper advocates a general framework for chance-constrained OPF problems in terms of continuous random variables. It is shown that, irrespective of the type of distribution, the random-variable minimizers lead to affine feedback policies. Introducing a three-step methodology that exploits polynomial chaos expansion, the present paper provides a constructive approach to chance-constrained optimal power flow problems that does not assume a specific distribution, e.g. Gaussian, for the uncertainties. We illustrate our findings by means of a tutorial example and a 300-bus test case. Copyright © 2018, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) give rise to progenitors that continuously replenish mature blood and immune cells. Previous studies have revealed extensive heterogeneity within the phenotypic HSC compartment regarding self-renewal capacity, cell cycle activity, transcriptomic programs and functional lineage outcomes of individual HSCs. However, the mechanisms underlying HSC heterogeneity and how heterogenous cell states, molecular programs and functional properties of individual HSCs are related to each other remain poorly understood. In order to unravel these mechanisms, we conducted a comprehensive single-cell analysis of clonal hematopoietic systems derived from 54 single transplanted murine HSCs and linked these data to functional reconstitution outcomes. We examined the sustained engrafting hematopoietic systems across eight immunological organs in-depth, which revealed unique patterns of lineage output, self-renewal capacity and repopulation dynamics. Modeling the repopulation of blood cell types over time identified distinct kinetic patterns of lineage reconstitution, which were directly linked to the self-renewal capacity and the differential repopulation of the hematopoietic stem and progenitor cell compartment. Moreover, single-cell transcriptomic analyses revealed that lineage-, stemness- and dormancy-associated programs, as well as gene regulatory networks were distinctly regulated within the HSC compartment of clonally-derived systems and could partially explain the observed functional heterogeneity. Collectively, our data unveils multiple layers of HSC heterogeneity and identifies reconstitution kinetics as a common underlying denominator.

The real-time implementation of control and estimation algorithms on microcontrollers with limited memory and computational power requires a model that describes the dynamics of the vibrating system in sufficient detail, yet makes real-time deployment on sampled systems feasible. While extracting a model from finite element analysis is always possible, this approach yields models that are too complex to be evaluated in sample timing that is typical for vibration phenomena. In case of nonlinear vibrations, this is even more critical as state-of-the-art optimal control and estimation algorithms will have to evaluate a non-convex objective function. This paper introduces the modeling and system identification procedure of a nonlinear vibrating beam that results a real-time feasible mathematical model. Position and velocity measurements are made on a slender vibrating beam mounted equipped with a tip mass on a linear excitation stage using non-contact laser Doppler vibrometry. The measurement results are then fitted to two model candidates by using genetic algorithms to identify unknown parameters.
