Estuary areas are characterized optically by high concentrations of water constituents. A comparison of river total suspended solid (TSS) concentration determined using different bandwidth sensors, ALI and Hyperion, which is based on inverse modelling of in situ sampling and water surface spectra, enables us to estimate TSS at a free selection between the ALI and Hyperion sensors. We employed a semi-empirical method in a comparative analysis of river TSS concentration estimated from ALI and Hyperion data in the Pearl River estuary, as a case study demonstrating the usefulness and the differences in ALI and Hyperion data for suspended solids concentration estimation. The validation snowed there is a good correlation between ALI and Hyperion inverse TSS and the estimation of the concentration of TSS was accurate. However, the ALI-based inversion result underestimates TSS, with larger error values from real values of TSS within the shorter band range. Copyright © 2008 IAHS Press.

In this paper, it has been shown that computational jobs, such as encoding of input data and AND, OR operation, can work on the computers (by using computer databases and algorithms for the purpose of speeding up and enhancing biological research). By combining more complex functions, more complex molecular programs for gene analysis can be constructed. It is expected an in vivo (i.e. inside cellular life forms) computer will be realized from this technology, which detects the cell state through gene expression patterns, and controls the cell conditions with output RNA (ribose nucleic acid). The replication of biomolecular techniques based upon DNA (deoxyribose nucleic acid) architecture has been proposed. It may provide a powerful tool for both research and clinical applications. To develop functional supra-molecular systems, where sequence-programmable and evolvable molecular systems have been constructed as cell-free chemical systems using biomolecules such as DNA and proteins based on the integration of electronics, computer science, IT (information technology), mathematical and statistical tools. This paper is organised into four parts: part I describes the functioning and encoding processes of DNA computers, which are implemented using a traveling salesman problem (as in artificial intelligent systems) and single shortest path routing approach (as in computer networks) using object-oriented approach of software development, part II presents database integration with DNA using client-server technologies of Web design, part III discusses the implications of DNA for computer and network security, and part IV investigates and shows the results with the use of above mentioned approaches.

The main idea in this paper is using combinatorial Web service market based mechanism (CWSMBM) to allow service demanders bid for more than one service at the same time. It takes quality of service into consideration in the design of market allocation mechanisms. We define the cost-benefit threshold for service providers to decide whether to accept or reject service tasks. We found that the cost-benefit threshold improves the global benefit value effectively but would sometimes cause a starvation problem. But the starvation can be a trade-off in sacrificing some service demanders to enhance the global benefit.

Adverse drug reaction (ADR) is big challenge in drug development process. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) collects a lot of ADR report cases. We develop a tool which integrates drug and drug target knowledge bases and builds up drug target networks whose topological analysis can reveal drug interaction complexity for every ADR report in FDA. We classify drugs using anatomical therapeutic chemical classification (ATC) code and drug targets using drug target ontology (DTO). This tool can help not only the analysis and prediction on ADRs cases but also the drug target assessment in the early drug discovery process.

This paper has been designed to identify the Web metrics for evaluating the reliability and maintainability of hypermedia applications. In the age of information and communication technology (ICT), Web and the Internet, have brought significant changes in information technology (IT) and their related scenarios. Therefore in this paper an attempt has been made to trace out the Web-based measurements towards the creation of efficient Web centric applications. The dramatic increase in Web site development and their relative usage has led to the need of Web-based metrics. These metrics will accurately assess the efforts in the Web-based applications. Here we promote the simple, but elegant approaches to estimate the efforts needed for designing Web-based applications with the help of user behavior model graph (UBMG), Web page replacement algorithms, and RS Web Application Effort Assessment (RSWAEA) method. Effort assessment of hyperdocuments is crucial for Web-based systems, where outages can result in loss of revenue and dissatisfied customers. Here we advocate a simple, but elegant approach for effort estimation for Web applications from an empirical point of view. The proposed methods and models have been designed after carrying out an empirical study with the students of an advanced university class and Web designers that used various client-server based Web technologies. Our first aim was to compare the relative importance of each Web-based metric and method. Second, we also implemented the quality of the designs obtained based by constructing the User Behavior Model Graphs (UBMGs) to capture the reliability of Web-based applications. Thirdly, we use Web page replacement algorithms for increasing the Web site usability index, maintainability, reliability, and ranking. The saline water color component characteristic (chlorophyll-a and chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM)) and their spatial change tendency in the Pearl River Estuary from the In-situ data in December of 2006 was studied. Based on the experimental results, the mixing behavior of CDOM in the Shawan-Humen Watercourse was analyzed. The mixing behavior was controlled by topography, hydrological and biological factors, and the relationships among absorption characteristics of CDOM (at 400 nm, ag400). Contained is a discussion of chlorophyll-a concentration and salinity. The chlorophyll-a concentration decreases with increasing CDOM absorption under a salinity of 10, while the chlorophyll-a concentration decreases with increasing salinity. The salinity is becomes less aggressive towards the Lingding Bay in the saltwater intrusion reach of Shawan-Humen, and a low chlorophyll-a concentration area occurs in the Shiziyang riverway where the salinity is greater than 20. The highest chlorophyll-a concentration of surface water was observed in the Dadaoshawei site of the Shawan tributary reach- where the saltwater and freshwater interface. The slope distribution of the CDOM spectral absorption curve in the Shawan-Humen watercourse was increased towards the Lingding Bay direction. The spectral slope S value of CDOM varied from 0.0107 to 0.0121 nm-1 with an average value of 0.0116 nm-1. This was an indication that the terrestrial river input was the main resource of CDOM in the Shawan-Humen watercourse. The high correlation (R2=0.9458) of surface water and bottom water (-7.5m) salinity showed that salinity can be monitored by remote sensing. The ag400 in the saltwater intrusion reach showed conservative behavior, indicating strong characteristics of the CDOM it reflected. There was a correlative relationship between ag400, chlorophyll-a concentration and the salinity, showing that a water color analysis technique can be used to study the distribution and behavior of salinit

Diabetes is a chronic illness that food intake affects the bodypsilas needs and insulinpsilas ability to lower blood sugar. This paper proposes an intelligent agent, called the personal food recommendation agent, based on the ontology model for diabetic food recommendation. The agent can create a meal plan according to a personpsilas lifestyle and particular health needs. The required knowledge is stored in the ontology model predefined by domain experts. It contains the Taiwanese food ontology and a set of personal food ontology. The personal food recommendation agent includes the ontology creating mechanism, the personal ontology filter, the food fuzzy number creating mechanism, the fuzzy inference mechanism, and the real-time recommendation mechanism. It retrieves the personal ontology and meal records to recommend a personal meal plan based on the fuzzy inference mechanism. An experimental platform has been constructed to test the performance of the agent. The results indicate that the proposed method can work effectively and alleviate the effort of a registered dietician.

IEEE 802.11e standard is developed for QoS provisioning in WLANs. Admission Control is a mechanism that controls stations to be served in WLANs. In practice, evaluation of admission control plays an important role for QoS support. The goal of this paper is to calculate the WLAN delays with ACs. The delay calculation can be used to guarantee the QoS of the VoIP and video streams, which is divided into three parts. One is the propagation delay. Another is that packets queue up in stations or APs. Lastly, the delay is taken due to collisions. For VoIP and video streams, the second delay is more important than other two delays. Consequently, we will focus on the calculation of the second delay. Some simulations and numerical results are provided and discussed in detail. Experimental results show that the proposed method is more accurate in calculating the delay of packets in WLANs.

Demosaicking interpolation and digital zooming are two significant techniques for the quality of enlarged full-color image in resource-constrained single chip devices. This paper proposes an effective demosaicking and zooming algorithm by referencing to the neighboring information. In addition to considering one direction neighboring information to estimate the missing value, the EDZ algorithm develops expressions to join the horizontal, vertical, and diagonal neighboring information to improve the accuracy of the estimated value. Experiments performed on the EDZ algorithm and previous schemes show that the EDZ algorithm achieves better visual perception and the PSNR measurement in average.

Globalization is making both developed and developing countries think about effective and efficient strategies that will advance their economies and social development. Throughout the history of civilization, engineering has played a critical role in economic development. Engineers are key not only in solving local problems but also in knowledge creation and knowledge transfer. Thus, it is imperative that technical know-how be supplemented with professional skills to develop an 'adaptive leader' who is capable of addressing the multiple challenges of an ever changing world. The key-question posed by the 21st century global economy to engineering educators and stake-holders is this: "How can education in science and technology help to reduce poverty, boost socio-economic development, and take the right decisions for sustainable and environmental compatible development?" To answer these questions, a global approach is needed: and this can only be accomplished by a "team" which has its roots in all regions of the world, i.e. which is enabled to think globally and then act locally. There's a need to establish effective engineering education processes of high quality around the world to assure a global supply of well-prepared engineering graduates. This paper describes the reasons for the creation in October 2006 of IFEES - the International Federation of engineering Education Societies. It will describe the vision, mission, and key strategies of IFEES. It will also describe some of the initiatives currently underway and how the various engineering education stakeholders can leverage and benefit from engaging with IFEES, thus strengthening the organizational capacity of engineering education societies throughout the world.
