We propose a novel Markovian segmentation model which takes into account edge information. By construction, the model uses only pairwise interactions and its energy is sub modular. Thus the exact energy minima is obtained via a max-flow/min-cut algorithm. The method has been quantitatively evaluated on synthetic images as well as on fluorescence microscopic images of live cells.

In this paper we consider the limitations of Linear Discriminative Analysis (LDA) when applying it for large-scale problems. Since LDA was originally developed for two-class problems the obtained transformation is sub-optimal if multiple classes are considered. In fact, the separability between the classes is reduced, which decreases the classification power. To overcome this problem several approaches including weighting strategies and mixture models were proposed. But these approaches are complex and computational expensive. Moreover, they were only tested for a small number of classes. In contrast, our approach allows to handle a huge number of classes showing excellent classification performance at low computational costs. The main idea is to split the original data into multiple sub-sets and to compute a single LDA space for each sub-set. Thus, the separability in the obtained subspaces is increased and the overall classification power is improved. Moreover, since smaller matrices have to be handled the computational complexity is reduced for both, training and classification. These benefits are demonstrated on different publicly available datasets. In particular, we consider the task of object recognition, where we can handle up to 1000 classes.

In this paper we present a new cross-platform approach for video game delivery in wired and wireless local networks. The developed 3D streaming and video streaming approaches enable users to access video games on set top boxes and handheld devices that natively are not capable to run PC games. During the development of the distributed gaming system we have faced a number of challenges and problems posed by the hardware and network limitations. In order to solve these problems we have developed a multilevel testing methodology which is based on user assessment and technical measures for the system under development. In this paper we focus on the technical measures and instrumentation that we use for the system's performance measurement and testing. The benefits of our testing methodology are demonstrated through examples from the development and testing work.

This paper presents a semiautomatic method for the identification of immunohistochemical (IHC) staining in digitized samples. The user trains the system by selecting on a sample image some typical positive stained regions that will be used as a reference for the construction of a distance metric. In this learning process, the global optimum is obtained by induction employing higher polynomial terms of the Mahalanobis distance, extracting nonlinear features of the IHC pattern distributions. The results of the proposed method showed a high correlation to a pathologist's manual analysis, which was used as a golden standard, presenting a more robust discrimination between stained and non-stained areas with little bias. © 2009 IEEE.

CAD drawings reuse is of great importance in promoting design efficiency and productivity. The ability to retrieve CAD drawings is the core of drawings reuse task. Most of the existing drawings retrieval systems rely only on text descriptions. Due to complexity of visual feature, a little system is based on content. A simplified topological relationship is proposed to describe visual features for dimension reduction. An effective topological relationship vector is constructed by graph spectra. A novel retrieval system based on visual contents, including topological relationships, shape, and directional relationships, is proposed. The experiments show that the proposed approach and system are superior to the text-based and traditional content-based retrieval systems.

Balloon based aerobots have much to offer ESA's future planetary exploration programmes, e.g. high resolution mapping, landing site selection, rover guidance, data relay, sample site selection, payload delivery, and atmospheric measurement and meteorology. Aerobots could be used in a variety of configurations from uncontrolled free-flying to tethered rover operation, and are able to perform a range of important tasks which other exploration vehicles cannot. In many ways they provide a missing 'piece' of the exploration 'jigsaw', acting as a bridge between the capabilities of in-situ landers and rovers and non-contact orbiters. Technically, a Lighter than Air (LTA) aerobot concept is attractive because it is low risk, low-cost, efficient, and much less complex than Heavier than Air (HTA) vehicles such as fixed wing gliders, and crucially, much of the required technology 'building blocks' currently exist. Smart imaging and localisation is a key enabling technology for remote aerobots. Given the current lack of comprehensive localisation and communications systems, it is important that aerobots are equipped with the ability to determine their location, with respect to a planet's surface. The availability of a variety of terrain feature extraction, point tracking, and image compression algorithms, means that a self-reliant system is now achievable. We have developed a demonstrator imaging and localisation package (ILP) for a Martian balloon. This ILP system incorporates a unique combination of image based relative and absolute localisation techniques. We have demonstrated our ILP using both simulation and a real laboratory based model aerobot. The availability of both simulated and real aerobot data thus providing a comprehensive test and evaluation framework for the ILP functionality. The results from our work are presented in this paper.

Grain size of forged nickel alloy is an important feature for the mechanical properties of the material. For fully automatic grain size evaluation in images of micrographs it is necessary to detect the boundaries of each grain. This grain boundary detection is influenced directly by artifacts like scratches and twins. Twins can be seen as parallel lines inside one grain, whereas a scratch can be identified as a sequence of collinear line segments that can be spread over the whole image. Both kinds of artifacts introduce artificial boundaries inside grains. To avoid wrong grain size evaluation, it is necessary to remove these artifacts prior to the size evaluation process. For the generation of boundary images various algorithms have been tested. The most stable results were achieved by grayscale reconstruction and a subsequent watershed segmentation. A modified line Hough transform with a third dimension in the Hough accumulator space, describing the distance of the parallel lines, is used to directly detect twins. Scratch detection is done by applying the standard line Hough transform followed by a rule based segment detection along the found Hough lines. The results of these operations give a detection rate of more than 90 percent for twins and more than 50 percent for scratches. © 2006 SPIE-IS&T.

Object identification from local information has recently been investigated with respect to its potential for robust recognition, e.g., in case of partial object occlusions, scale variation, noise, and background clutter in detection tasks. This work contributes to this research by a thorough analysis of the discriminative power of local appearance patterns and by proposing to exploit local information content for object representation and recognition. In a first processing stage, we localize discriminative regions in the object views from a posterior entropy measure, and then derive object models from selected discriminative local patterns. Object recognition is then applied to test patterns with associated low entropy using an efficient voting process. The method is evaluated by various degrees of partial occlusion and Gaussian image noise, resulting in highly robust recognition even in the presence of severe occlusion effects.

The draft international standard ITU-T H.263 is closely related to the well known and widely used ITU-T Recommendation H.261. However, H.263 does provide the same subjective image quality at less than half the bit-rate. In this paper we investigate to what extend single enhancements of H.263 contribute to this performance gain, and consider the trade-off quality vs. complexity. Based on typical test sequences, H.263 with its various modes is compared to H.261 on the basis of rate distortion curves at bit-rates up to 128 kbps. At 64 kbps, the performance gain of H.263 in its default mode compared to H.261 is approximately 2 dB. This improvement is achieved with only little increase of complexity, and is mainly due to more accurate motion compensation with half-pel accuracy. Considering the trade-off quality vs. complexity, the combination of the optional coding-modes "Advanced prediction mode" and "PB-frames mode" is a good compromise, resulting in an additional performance gain of 1.5 dB PSNR at 64 kbps. The "Syntax-based arithmetic coding mode" on the other hand, offers only a very small performance gain (0.1 dB at 64 kbps) for its increased computational complexity. Results from profiling an H.263 software codec are presented in order to support complexity considerations of the optional coding-modes.
