Eddy current displacement sensors (ECDS) have been suggested as a suitable technique to measure small displacements. To model the interaction between a sensing coil and a metallic plate, a transformer based equivalent circuit model (ECM) is used. However, in harsh environment like continuous casting, large displacements and high temperatures need to be separately addressed in a standard ECM. In this paper we present an analysis of the sensor effects of an ECDS in harsh environments. We analyse the impact of cross sensitivities (CS), i.e. displacement and temperature variations, on the input impedance of an ECM and present a finite element model (FEM) that represents these CS. A special expression for the input impedance allows a better interpretation of the sensor behavior. The paper addressed a first approach to analyse sensor effects of ECDS based on an ECM in harsh environments.

Argon purging is a process in steel production where liquid metal is flushed with argon gas to remove impurities. It is an essential processing part for high quality steel production. For process control, reliable flow measurements of the amount of purging gas are required. However, due to the situation in the steelworks, the measurement of the flow must be done directly at the injection. At this position an energy autarkic measurement system is required, which puts energy constraints to the application of flow metering techniques. The harsh operating conditions at this position make this measurement even more challenging. Currently, no off-the-shelf measurement system exists. In this work, we investigate the feasibility of lower power thermal anemometry for flow metering in the present application. Different sensing elements and operational modes for thermal anemometry are studied and analysed by means of test rig measurements. Finally, an uncertainty evaluation is presented, which provides an approach for the setting of the operational conditions of such a sensor.

The majority of nanopositioning and nanomeasuring machines (NPMMs) are based on three independent linear movements in a Cartesian coordinate system. This in combination with the specific nature of sensors and tools limits the addressable part geometries. An enhancement of a NPMM is introduced by the implementation of rotational movements while keeping the precision untouched. For this purpose, a parameter based dynamic evaluation system with quantifiable technological parameters has been set up and employed to identify and assess general solution concepts and adequate substructures. Evaluations taken, show high potential for three linear movements of the object in combination with two angular movements of the tool. The influence of the additional rotation systems on the existing structure of NPMMs has been investigated further on. Test series on the repeatability of an NPMM enhanced by a chosen combination of a rotary stage and a goniometer setup are realized. As a result of these test series, the necessity of in situ position determination of the tool became very clear. The tool position is measured in situ in relation to a hemispherical reference mirror by three Fabry Pérot interferometers. FEA optimization has been used to enhance the overall system structure with regard to reproducibility and long term stability. Residual deviations to the ideal moving pathes have been experimentally investigated by replacing the tool by a retroreflector and utelization of the various laser interferometers of the NPMM. The knowledge gained has been formed into general rules for the verification and optimization of design solutions for multiaxial nanopositioning machines. © 2021 Proceedings of the 21st International Conference of the European Society for Precision Engineering and Nanotechnology, EUSPEN 2021. In this study, we implemented the simulation software Comsol Multiphysics to search for a proper proportion of carbon-filled thermoplastic polyurethane (CTPU) and neat thermoplastic polyurethane (STPU) in melt-extruded filaments, and we proposed practical 3D-printed shape for its use in wearables. A comparative study was performed to investigate the impact of 3D-printing temperature and diverse sensor structures via electrical testing. The optimal shape was found to be the ‘space grid’ structure, printing processing temperature of 210°C and the proper proportion of CTPU 60%/ STPU 40%.

This papers presents a measurement setup which combines three different methods indicating the moisture fraction of a sample. This is managed by measuring the weight, the absolute electrical impedance with a harmonic excitation between 10 Hz to 1000 Hz and the surface reflectance of the sample with a spectroscope between 160 nm to 1100 nm. The measurements are carried out over 50 h every 5 min using a piece of porcine meat. The results show clear evidences that the dehydration occurs on the surface until the water inside is diffused to the surface completely. This can be seen on significant wavelengths of absorption bands in the reflected spectrum like 540 nm, 575 nm and 970 nm (oxyhaemobglobin and water) and in the impedance measurement that are both set into ratio with the weight loss of the sample. © 2021 De Gruyter Oldenbourg. Acoustic condition monitoring is a cost-effective approach to maintain proper machine operation. Defective machines often generate knocking sounds, e.g., due to loose metal parts, which can be modelled as an approximately periodic sequence of acoustic pulses. Based on a signal model for these sequential pulses, we derive a z-transform-based maximum a posteriori ratio test (MAPRT) detector that reliably detects such knocking noises. The proposed detector is tested with measurement data showing that it is more robust than the commonly used generalized likelihood ratio test (GLRT) pitch detector. Furthermore, the proposed MAPRT detector can be implemented efficiently using the chirp z-transform.

LiDAR sensors are crucial sensors for highly automated vehicles. Relevant information about the vehicle's sur-roundings can be obtained from 3D point clouds, which serves as a basis for decision-making for further control of the vehicle. For this purpose, information about the type and position of objects in the vehicle's environment and their velocity and movement direction is essential. In this paper, we present VelObPoints, a neural network architecture that estimates the longitudinal and lateral velocity and performs object detection on a single LiDAR point cloud. Compared to existing tracking methods, the neural network allows this information to be extracted from a single LiDAR frame. We propose a simulated dataset for training and testing, containing motion distortion effects. The neural network achieves a mean Intersection over Union of 0.863 and a mean average velocity error of 0.332 m s −l . Based on a single point cloud, this information, consisting of the object's scaling, position, and rotation, as well as its velocities in the longitudinal and lateral directions, is immediately available for the driving function. For subsequent motion prediction, and object tracking, leading to more quickly available velocity and motion direction information and higher redundancy in sensor data fusion.

Low-cost electromyograph combined with markerless pose detection

This papers presents a low-cost electromyograph combined with marker-less pose detection using computer vision. The developed and build three channel electromyograph is tested by measuring the muscle activity of one leg, while the subject is performing squats. Simultaneously, a camera records the exercise and subsequently the image data is evaluated by OpenPose. We could show that this simple setup enables the user to evaluate the muscle activity of three independent muscles as function of the knee angle. These results are in good agreement to the expected muscle activity. The sample-rate of the EMG device is 2 kHz. The overall cost of the developed device is under 100 €. To our knowledge, this is the first work combining these two methods for dynamic exercises. The method is well customizable for other sports due to the battery powered device and its handy size. © 2021 De Gruyter Oldenbourg. All rights reserved.
