Electron–core hole interactions are critical for proper interpretation of core-level spectroscopies commonly used as analytical tools in materials science. Here we utilize resonant Auger-electron spectroscopy to uniquely identify exciton, shake, and charge-transfer processes that result from the sudden creation of the core hole in both x-ray-absorption and photoemission spectra. These effects are captured for the transition-metal compounds SrTiO3 and MoS2 by fully ab initio, combined real-time cumulant, and Bethe-Salpeter equation approaches to account for core hole dynamics and screening. Atomic charges and excited-state electron-density fluctuations reflect materials’ solid-state electronic structure, loss of translational symmetry around the core hole, and breakdown of the sudden approximation. They also demonstrate competition between long- and short-range screening in a solid.

Vibrational triboelectric nanogenerators (V-TENG) can be used to harvest broadband vibration energy due to the nonlinear impact force induced by a stopper. However, V-TENGs with a single stopper have limited bandwidth and surface charge density, which has limited their application in wideband vibration energy harvesting. Herein, a V-TENG with two stoppers is proposed for frequency band broadening and charge density enhancement. The theoretical analysis and experimental validation have indicated the V-TENG with two stoppers could improve the bandwidth by 75% compared with one stopper at a gap distance of 0.5 mm. Moreover, a charge pump can be constructed with two output channels, which has improved surface charge density by about 14 times. With the frequency varying from 18 to 38 Hz, the V-TENG can continually power 400 LEDs and charge a commercial capacitor quickly. This work has shown an encouraging method for enhancing the performance of V-TENGs, which also has great prospects in harvesting wideband vibration energy from machines, cars, ships, and human motions for self-powered electronics. © 2022, The Authors. The constitutive mechanical behavior of the individual components in Lithium-ion cells has a fundamental influence on the development of internal electrical short-circuits in crash-relevant load scenarios. These short circuits can result in explosive, thermally unstable states (so called thermal runaways). The experimental characterization of mechanical properties of single components but also of entire cells is therefore a central aspect in the safety-related assessment of battery systems. This paper presents and compares experimental results of the mechanical characterization of individual cell components as well as whole pouch-cells under different loading patterns. Especially, the different mechanical behavior of the active materials NMC and graphite was investigated in dry and wet conditions. In compression tests, the presence of the electrolyte reduced the stress levels by about 100 % for the graphite layered anode (Cu) and by about 20 % for the NMC layered cathode (Al) compared to dry conditions. The separator displayed an anisotropy with tensile strengths differing by a factor of three between the longitudinal and transversal orientations. For investigating the failure of a whole pouch-cell, interrupted flat-punch and hemispherical-punch indentation tests were performed. Post-mortem CT analysis revealed that crack development is rather gradual than abrupt. The initiation and propagation of the failing cell structure were examined and related to the characteristics of the individual cell components. It could be concluded that for a physical based modeling of the deformation and fracture processes within the cell, understanding the mechanical behavior on component and on cell level is crucial.

The growth in measuring objects and the demand for measurement precision in the sub-nanometer range are the challenges for future nano positioning and nano measuring machines (NPMMs). However, the usual moving stage principle will reach its limits due to the larger moving masses it entails for large measuring volumes. Therefore, an inverse kinematic concept for NPMMs is proposed, which permits to reduce the moving masses to a few kilogram. In this concept, the interferometers and the probe are moved, while the measuring object and the interferometer mirrors are fixed. The probe position is measured and controlled in 6 DOF. © 2018 institute of Physics Publishing. All rights reserved.

Reference tracking of dynamic system using prefilter and integral extension

In this paper, a control approach for reference tracking in state-space that combines two existing methods for designing two degrees-of-freedom controllers for reference tracking is presented. One of these methods is the use of a prefilter V to scale the reference input in order to compensate the existing DC-Gain of the closed-loop behavior. The second approach incorporates an integral extension in the state-space model by integrating the measured output and embedding it in the dynamic of the system to be controlled. Each of these approaches has advantages as well as disadvantages. By merging these two methods, the goal is to use the advantages of each method to overcome their drawbacks simultaneously.

This paper investigates opportunities to rapidly detect defects in photovoltaic (PV) panels. It is worth noting that a defect in a single PV cell can significantly reduce the output power of a PV panel and, thereby, of an entire PV array. Hence, it is crucial to detect faults in PV panels and replace them within PV power plants. In this paper, we utilise synchronized thermography (ST) to obtain infrared (IR) images under outdoor environmental conditions. We illustrate how IR-images obtained under changing irradiation and different angles can be analysed to rapidly detect defects in PV panels. Our technique allows maintenance staff to quickly identify PV panels with defects on the site of a PV power plant.

To keep up with Moore's law in future, the critical dimensions of device features must further decrease in size. Thus, the nano-electronics and nano-optics manufacturing is based on the ongoing development of the lithography and encompasses also some unconventional methods. In this context, we use the Nanopositioning and Nanomeasuring Machine (NPMM) to generate features in resist layers by means of Direct Laser Writing (DLW),1 Field Emission Scanning Probe Lithography (FE-SPL)2 and Soft UV-Nanoimprint Lithography (Soft UV-NIL)3 with highest accuracy. The NPMM was collaboratively developed by TU Ilmenau and SIOS Meßtechnik GmbH.4 The tool provides a large positioning volume of 25 mm × 25 mm × 5 mm with a positioning resolution of 0.1 nm and a repeatability of less than 0.3 nm over the full range. Previously a single electron transistor (SET) working at room temperature generated by FE-SPL has been demonstrated.5 However, the throughput is limited because of the serial writing scheme making Tennant's law (At ∼R5) valid.6 Here, At is the areal throughput and R the lithographic resolution. Thus, patterning of the whole NPMM positioning area by FE-SPL is very time consuming. In order to address this problem, different strategies and/or combinations are conceivable. In this work a so-called Mix-and-Match lithography is conducted. A fast generation of structures in the sub-micron range is possible by means of DLW. By this, features such as electrical wires, contact patches for bonding or labels are generated in resist. Subsequently, we use FE-SPL in order to define the actual nano-scaled features for quantum or single electron devices. In combination, DLW and FE-SPL are maskless lithography strategies, hence, offering completely novel opportunities for rapid nanoscale prototyping of largescale resist patterns. Dimethoate (DMT) pesticides concentration is increasing in the environment due to the uncontrolled use in agriculture. This affects directly the environment and is of high risk for public health. For in-situ monitoring, a needle electrode based sensor has been developed for direct use in environmental and food security applications. Needle can easily penetrate fruits and vegetables. We demonstrated the feasibility of using silver needle/poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDAC)/ reduced graphene oxide (Ag/PDAC/rGO) for detection of DMT pesticide. The functionalization of the silver needle was carried out by dip coating in PDAC and an electrochemical deposition method was employed to deposit and reduce graphene oxide on the needle tip surface. The modified needle electrode has been characterized at different levels of modification by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showing a successful functionalization. Furthermore, electrochemical characterizations by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) show a good sensitivity.
