In terahertz (THz) time-domain spectroscopy, the excitation of THz waves by fiber optic transmission of femtosecond pulsed lasers can provide great convenience for nondestructive testing of large and medium-sized aircraft. However, due to the high peak power characteristics of the femtosecond laser, the pulse spreading and distortion caused by fiber dispersion and nonlinearity can seriously affect the output laser pulse quality and the excitation of THz waves. In this paper, a three-segment femtosecond laser transmission scheme using asymmetric dual-core fiber (ADCF)-single-mode fiber (SMF)-dispersion-compensated fiber (DCF) is proposed. The simulation study results show that the strong dispersion using a 2.8-cm-long ADCF can reduce the 1 kW peak power to 8.03 W and extend the 50 fs pulse width to 3.74 ps, respectively. The spreading pulse can be restored to the peak power of 987.20 W and pulse width of 51.80 fs after the 10m-long SMF and then transmitted by the 66.9 cm-long DCF. This shows that the proposed femtosecond laser transmission scheme can achieve good pulse recompression and simultaneous recovery of pulse waveform and power, which lays the foundation for the construction of further THz time-domain spectroscopy systems using longer fibers for femtosecond laser transmission. © 2023 SPIE.

Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) is an accurate method used to study the internal properties of lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery cells. It is important to accurately estimate the State of Charge (SoC) of Li-ion battery cells for safety and longevity considerations. There are several methods to estimate the SoC;however, accurate methods require a lot of computational resources and increase the system complexity. This paper proposes an EIS-based experimental method for SoC estimation based on calculating the area under the EIS magnitude vs. frequency curve and correlating the result with SoC. The results demonstrate a relationship between the EIS magnitude and the SoCs within a certain range and under specific conditions. Furthermore, the suggested method reduces the errors and eliminates the need for fitting the EIS impedance spectrum for SoC estimation. © 2024 IEEE.

In this paper a novel cooling strategy is presented using a sub-zero metalworking fluid when milling Ti-6Al-4V. The metalworking fluid, composed of water and ethane-1,2-diol, was applied to the process at varied supply temperatures. An analysis of the occurring forces and temperatures, as well as the resulting surface integrity, is carried out. The surface integrity is characterized by microhardness measurements in the surface layer of the workpiece. Additionally, the surface topography is characterized using optical measuring techniques. The results are compared to those obtained using dry milling and when using a conventional cryogenic CO2 cooling strategy. © 2022 The Authors.

In industrial digitization, data-driven analysis like condition monitoring and predictive maintenance relies on extensive measurement data. However, there’s often a lack of data on machine or system states. sensor-integrating machine elements (SiME) can address this gap due to their widespread use, standardization, and in-situ measurement capability. Yet, integrating sensors typically compromises mechanical function. To ensure broad usability and retrofitting, maintaining mechanical functions to a defined degree is crucial. General procedures for systematically finding optimal design space solutions are lacking. In prior work, a procedure was developed for multi-axial force sensor integration into M20 bolts. This contribution demonstrates the procedure’s applicability to (1) M12 bolts for uni-axial force measurements using strain gauges, and (2) jaw couplings for torque measurement using capacitive sensors. Results indicate the procedure’s efficacy in both cases, yielding viable design space parameters. However, constructing an optimization function for jaw couplings in the final step was not feasible, as both mechanical and sensory function fulfillment indices pointed in the same direction. © 2024 by ASME.

Model of rough surfaces with Gaussian processes

Surface roughness plays a critical role and has effects in, e.g. fluid dynamics or contact mechanics. For example, to evaluate fluid behavior at different roughness properties, real-world or numerical experiments are performed. Numerical simulations of rough surfaces can speed up these studies because they can help collect more relevant information. However, it is hard to simulate rough surfaces with deterministic or structured components in current methods. In this work, we present a novel approach to simulate rough surfaces with a Gaussian process (GP) and a noise model because GPs can model structured and periodic elements. GPs generalize traditional methods and are not restricted to stationarity so they can simulate a wider range of rough surfaces. In this paper, we summarize the theoretical similarities of GPs with auto-regressive moving-average processes and introduce a linear process view of GPs. We also show examples of ground and honed surfaces simulated by a predefined model. The proposed method can also be used to fit a model to measurement data of a rough surface. In particular, we demonstrate this to model turned profiles and surfaces that are inherently periodic. © 2022, CC BY.

Lattice vibrations and energy landscape of the isoelectronic semiconductor series CuBr, ZnSe, GaAs, and Ge: The special case of CuBr and its d-level chemistry

We have examined the lattice vibrations and the energy landscape of the isoelectronic diamond and zincblende semiconductor series CuBr, ZnSe, GaAs, and Ge. Vibrations are found to be an increasing function of ionicity, with the cation sublattice always vibrating more strongly than the anion sublattice. These findings are consistent with density functional theory (DFT) calculations of the energy landscape and temperature-dependent molecular dynamics simulations of the atomic-position fluctuations. For CuBr, inclusion of the Cu 3d Hubbard U term is found necessary to stabilize the zincblende structure and to bring its vibrational amplitudes into agreement with experiment. In addition, vibrations are found to strongly affect the CuBr near-edge x-ray absorption fine structure that we have successfully modeled by including displacements in our theoretical Bethe-Salpeter equation calculations. Reverse Monte Carlo structural refinements using large atomic configurations to simultaneously fit x-ray absorption and x-ray total-scattering data support these conclusions, and they reveal strong Cu-Br first-neighbor correlations and asymmetric distributions of interatomic distances in the temperature ranges of both negative and positive thermal expansion. Delineation of the CuBr valence band photoelectron spectrum into its Cu 3d and Br 4p states uniquely reveals their covalent mixing and further supports the DFT results.

This paper introduces the automation measurement software Flexsensor for capturing resonant spectra, an innovative and extensible software program developed explicitly for measuring and evaluating Silicon Photonic (SiPh) circuits. Wafer-level Wafer-level Silicon Photonics allows the integration of numerous optical components and structures on a single wafer. However, researchers and engineers need precise and repeatable measurements to characterize them and face significant challenges when dealing with large numbers of complex systems on a single wafer. A toolchain gap hampers the measuring of such highly integrated photonic structures: While the setup necessitates the integration of an optimized hardware and software toolchain, there is neither software nor a standardized way to implement a reproducible measurement routine for a massive set of measurements. Flexsensor allows integration and control of external hardware (tunable lasers, analog-digital converters) and supports measurement data storage and evaluation. The software enables researchers and engineers to efficiently analyze the spectral response of photonic structures and facilitate rapid measuring. © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Secret keys play a critical role in secure data transmission, and an efficient secret key generation scheme will enhance the secure transmission rate. However, the secret key is a scarce resource for classical encryption schemes like the Rivest-Shamir-Adleman (RSA) cryptosystem and its counterpart in quantum applications, and we should extract it from all possible random sources to maximize the key rate. In this paper, we investigate the achievable rate of the secret key generation (SKG)-channel-model based on an actual measured multi-mode fiber (MMF) channel, where there is an additional public discussion channel between the legitimate parties, which the adversary can perfectly overhear. In particular, we measure the fiber transmission matrix by digital holography. Based on the real measurements, we show that for 55-mode MMF, we can achieve a positive secret key rate at 51.3 bit/channel use with mode-dependent loss (MDL) at 1 dB and transmit power at 20 dBm. This demonstrates the feasibility of SKG in MMF.
