A novel variation of modified KNESER-NEY model using monomial discounting is presented and integrated into the MOSES statistical machine translation toolkit. The language model is trained on a large training set as usual, but its new discount parameters are tuned to the small development set. An in-domain and cross-domain evaluation of the language model is performed based on perplexity, in which sizable improvements are obtained. Additionally, the performance of the language model is also evaluated in several major machine translation tasks including Chinese-to-English. In those tests, the test data is from a (slightly) different domain than the training data. The experimental results indicate that the new model significantly outperforms a baseline model using SRILM in those domain adaptation scenarios. The new language model is thus ideally suited for domain adaptation without sacrificing performance on in-domain experiments. © The Authors.

Over the past years, a number of sensors have emerged, that enable gesture-based interaction with public display applications, including Microsoft Kinect, Asus Xtion, and Leap Motion. In this way, interaction with displays can be made more attractive, particularly if deployed across displays hence involving many users. However, interactive applications are still scarce, which can be attributed to the fact that developers usually need to implement a low-level connection to the sensor. In this work, we tackle this issue by presenting a toolkit, called SenScreen, consisting of (a) easy-to-install adapters that handle the low-level connection to sensors and provides the data via (b) an API that allows developers to write their applications in *** evaluate our approach by letting two groups of developers create an interactive game each using our toolkit. Observation, interviews, and questionnaire indicate that our toolkit simplifies the implementation of interactive applications and may, hence, serve as a first step towards a more widespread use of interactive public displays.

Over the last years diferent wearable electronic devices, technically similar to smart phones, have become available in the form factor of watches and glasses. However, including wearable sensing, actuation, and communication technologies directly into garments is still a great challenge. Cloths ofer the chance to unobtrusively integrate new functionalities. Nevertheless, it is essential to take into account that garments and cloths are fundamentally diferent from electronic devices. Manufacturing processes for fabrics and cloths, drivers for fashion, and user expectation with regard to comfort and durability are not comparable to classical electronic devices. In smart watches and glasses applications resemble common smart phone functionality (e.g., picture taking, (instant) messaging, voice communication, presentation of reminders) with new input and output channels. In contrast to this, new possibilities for sensing, actuation, and interaction are opening entirely new applications on garments. These new applications are needed to be identified and will then again drive the advances in smart garments. In this workshop, we focus on novel applications for garments. We discuss underlying abstraction layers that allow developers to create applications that are independent from a specific garment and that can be used with diferent garments. Furthermore, we invite research contributions and position statements on sensing and actuation as the basic mechanisms for smart garments. Overall the workshop aims at improving our understanding of the fundamental challenges when wearable computing moves beyond accessories into garments.

The success of visualization techniques depends on their support of perceptual and cognitive processes to perceive the graphically represented information. Apart from measuring accuracy rates of correctly given answers and completion times in user studies, eye tracking experiments provide an additional technique to analyze perceptual and cognitive processes of visual tasks. This paper presents an interdisciplinary approach for studying structures of scan paths by visual means. We propose to annotate graphical elements with semantic information. This annotation allows us to analyze the fixation sequences on these annotated graphical elements with respect to reading processes, visual search strategies, and visual reasoning.

With increasing use of GPS devices more and more location-based information is accessible. Thus not only more movements of people are tracked but also POI (point of interest) information becomes available in increasing geo-spatial density. To enable analysis of movement behavior, we present an approach to enrich trajectory data with semantic POI information and show how additional insights can be gained. Using a density-based clustering technique we extract 1.215 frequent destinations of ~150.000 user movements from a large e-mobility database. We query available context information from Foursquare, a popular location-based social network, to enrich the destinations with semantic background. As GPS measurements can be noisy, often more then one possible destination is found and movement patterns vary over time. Therefore we present highly interactive visualizations that enable an analyst to cope with the inherent geospatial and behavioral uncertainties.

In this position paper we outline a technology concept for making new situations and encounters more familiar and less threatening. Going to new places, interacting with new people and carrying out new tasks is part of everyday life. New situations create a sense of excitement but in many cases also anxiety based on a fear of the unknown. Our concept uses the metaphor of a pin board as peripheral display to automatically provide advance information about potential future experiences. By providing references to and information about future events and situations we aim at creating a "feeling of having already experienced the present situation" (term Déjà vu as defined in the Oxford Dictionary) once people are in a new situation. This draws on the positive definition of the concept of déjà vu. In this paper we outline our idea and use scenarios illustrate its potential. We assess different ways the concept can be realized and chart potential technology for content creation and for presentation. We also present a discussion of the impact on human memory and how this changes experiences. Copyright 2014 ACM.

In this paper, we investigate the concept of gaze-based interaction with 3D user interfaces. We currently see stereo vision displays becoming ubiquitous, particularly as autostereoscopy enables the perception of 3D content without the use of glasses. As a result, application areas for 3D beyond entertainment in cinema or at home emerge, including work settings, mobile phones, public displays, and cars. At the same time, eye tracking is hitting the consumer market with low-cost devices. We envision eye trackers in the future to be integrated with consumer devices (laptops, mobile phones, displays), hence allowing the user's gaze to be analyzed and used as input for interactive applications. A particular challenge when applying this concept to 3D displays is that current eye trackers provide the gaze point in 2D only (x and y coordinates). In this paper, we compare the performance of two methods that use the eye's physiology for calculating the gaze point in 3D space, hence enabling gaze-based interaction with stereoscopic content. Furthermore, we provide a comparison of gaze interaction in 2D and 3D with regard to user experience and performance. Our results show that with current technology, eye tracking on stereoscopic displays is possible with similar performance as on standard 2D screens. © 2014 ACM.

People spend a considerable time per day driving a car. Navigation technology helps the driver to find a location, to see traffic details, or to estimate the arrival time. Selecting a certain route influences the driving experience (i.e., the user experience while driving) through factors such as traffic density, landscape, or road type. However, current navigation systems mainly optimize routes regarding time, distance, or fuel efficiency-neglecting important driving experience factors: The fastest route might still be packed with traffic which stresses drivers or negatively influence their mood. In contrast, a slightly slower route could for instance offer a better driving experience with less traffic and scenic views. In this paper, we propose a concept that allows for experience-optimized routing to make driving more joyful and pleasurable. We also present the results of a web survey with 114 participants that we conducted to explore the users' preferences and opinions regarding taking the experience into account for route guidance. © 2014 ACM.

Due to advances in technology, displays could replace literally any surface in the future, including walls, windows, and ceilings. At the same time, midair remains a relatively unexplored domain for the use of displays as of today, particularly in public spaces. Nevertheless, we see large potential in the ability to make displays appear at any possible point in space, both indoors and outdoors. Such displays, that we call midair displays, could control large crowds in emergency situations, they could be used during sports for navigation and feedback on performance, or they could be used as group displays which enable information to be brought to the user anytime and anywhere. We explore the concept of midair displays and show that with current technology, for example copter drones, such displays can be easily built.

In order to better explore the opportunities for tangible interaction in new areas such as the home or cultural heritage sites, we used multiple rapidly-developed prototypes that take advantage of existing technology. Physical prototypes allow us to give form to ideas and to evaluate the integration of form and function, two core components of tangible interaction. We discuss potentials and pitfalls when using off-the-shelf digital devices (by embedding a device, cracking it open and building on it, or collating board and parts) through six prototypes developed in two studies. Hacking devices to materialize our ideas proved excellent for fast prototyping. Technology imposed constraints and prompted different design solutions than initially intended offering unexpected ways to engage. On the basis of this experience we outline a process and offer guidelines for the fast prototyping of tangible interactions. Copyright © 2014 ACM.
