We presented Scatterblogs, a system for microblog analysis that seamlessly integrates search backend and visual frontend. It provides powerful, automatic algorithms for detecting spatio-temporal 'anomalies' within blog entries as well as corresponding visual representations and interaction facilities for inspecting anomalies or exploiting them in further analytic steps. Apart from that, we consider the system's combinatoric facilities for building complex hypotheses from temporal, spatial, and content-related aspects an important feature. This was the key for creating a cross-checked analysis for MC1. © 2011 IEEE.

The annotation of documents with linguistic information requires time-consuming and therefore expensive manual annotation. Especially, a complex task, like coreference resolution, needs large data sets for the training of supervised machine learning methods. We present a tool which combines visualization techniques and unsupervised machine learning to support the annotation of documents with coreference information. Self-organizing Maps are used to cluster similar data and visualize the feature space. For link visualization, precise annotation, and error correction a matrix-based coreference visualization is used which exploits the transitive property of the coreference relation.

In order to allow blind people independent navigation in unknown areas, we have developed a navigation system that seamlessly integrates both static maps and dynamic location-based textual information from a variety of sources. Each information source requires a different kind of acquisition technique. The acquired information is integrated by a context management platform and then presented to the user on a tactile-acoustical map depending on the sources available for his current position. Positioning is achieved by a combination of an inertial tracking system, RFID technology and GPS and the user is guided to a desired destination by speech output and a hap tic cane. The resulting system is the first of its kind to integrate a variety of maps and other accumulated location-based information on a unified interface for blind people. © 2011 IEEE.

While driving many tasks compete for the attention of the user, mainly via the audio and visual channel. When designing systems depending upon providing feedback to users (e.g., navigation systems), it is a crucial prerequisite to minimize influence on and distraction from the driving task. This becomes even more important when designing systems for the use on motorbikes;space for output devices is scarce, as people are wearing helmets visual feedback is often difficult due to lighting conditions, and audio feedback is limited. In a first step we aimed at creating an understanding as to how information could be communicated in a meaningful way using vibrotactile signals. Therefore, we investigated suitable positions of actuators on the hand, appropriate length of the vibration stimulus, and different vibration patterns. We built a first prototype with 4 vibration actuators attached to the fingertips and asked 4 participants to test our prototype while driving. With this work we envision to lay the foundations for vibrotactile support in navigation systems.

Traditional public notice areas (PNAs) are nowadays a popular means to publicly exchange information and reach people of a local community. The high usability led to a wide-spread use in stores, cafes, supermarkets, and public institutions. With public displays permeating public spaces and with display providers and owners being willing to share parts of their display space we envision traditional PNAs to be complemented or even replaced by their digital counterparts in the future, hence contributing to making public displays a novel communication medium. In this paper we report on the design and development of Digifieds (derived from digital classified), a digital public notice area. We deployed and evaluated Digifieds in an urban environment in the context of the UbiChallenge 2011 in Oulu, Finland over the course of 6 months. The deployment allowed the users' view to be studied with regard to the envisioned content, preferred interaction techniques, as well as privacy concerns, and to compare them against traditional PNAs. © 2011 ACM.

Molecular Dynamics simulations are an essential tool for many applications. The simulation of large molecules - like proteins - over long trajectories is of high importance e. g. for pharmaceutical, biochemical and medical research. For analyzing these data sets interactive visualization plays a crucial role as details of the interactions of molecules are often affected by the spatial relations between these molecules. From the large range of visual representations for such data, molecule surface representations are of high importance as they clearly depict geometric interactions, such as docking or substrate channel accessibility. However, these surface visualizations are computationally demanding and thus pose a challenge for interactive visualization of time-dependent data sets. We propose an optimization of the Contour-Buildup algorithm for the Solvent Excluded Surface (SES) to remedy this issue. An optimized subdivision of calculation tasks of the original algorithm allows for full utilization of massive parallel processing hardware. Our approach is especially well suited for modern graphics hardware employing the CUDA programming language. As we do not rely on any pre-computations our method is intrinsically applicable to time-dependent data with arbitrarily long trajectories. We are able to visualize the SES for molecules with up to ten thousand atoms interactively on standard consumer graphics cards.

New interaction techniques beyond mouse and keyboard were established during the last five years allowing different and multiple modalities. The aim of our work was to study how users work with a touch device, which can be used as a basis for designing natural user interfaces optimized for touch. We developed an evaluation concept for a single-versus multitouch scenario. Applying this concept we studied users' strategies, accuracy and completion times in performing the three evaluation tasks: moving virtual objects by touching, typing with a virtual keyboard and using touch menus to select options. The user tests were performed on a Microsoft Surface during the open day at our university. Results of the evaluation showed that our two user groups "beginners" and "professionals" directly profit from the natural interaction concepts of a touch interface, like for example direct manipulation, except for scenarios where a haptic feedback is helpful to minimize input errors. Both groups only differ in using a virtual keyboard due to training effects. Additional, the intuitive usage and novelty of a touch device seemed to motivate the participants in accomplishing the tasks. © 2011 IADIS.

We propose a novel interactive user interface for the efficient, one-dimensional navigation in massive, ordered datasets. Applying a multi-layered, distorted visualization we provide both context and detail information about the investigated data and allow for both large scale and precise navigation. Adjacent layers display the data at gradually varying scales. This creates a visual relation between data points at different levels of detail and enables the user to browse through the data at varying speeds. Thereby, a sense of global context is retained, while at the same time detail information about the current focus position is kept in view. We believe that this approach is suitable for the investigation of massive, ordered datasets such as time-based data series, lists, or tables and discuss its possible applications in an example scenario.
