Word clouds provide a simple and effective means to visually communicate the most frequent words of text documents. However, only few word cloud visualizations support the contrastive analysis of multiple texts. This paper introduces Concentri Cloud, a layered word cloud layout that merges the words from several text documents into a single visualization. The weighted words are arranged in a concentric layout, with those representing the individual documents on the outer circle and the merged ones on inner circles. Interaction techniques allow to analyze the word cloud composition and to provide details on demand. The approach has been implemented and tested on several examples. A qualitative evaluation indicates the general value of Concentri Cloud and reveals benefits and limitations.

This paper presents preliminary results on a framework for the representation and visualization of text as OWL ontologies under an open-domain paradigm, where no a priori schema for the facts to be extracted is available. The extracted ontology is visually represented as a specifically tailored node-link diagram. The applicability of the approach is demonstrated on a use case from the patent domain.

With the advent of linked data sources, transportation information systems are no longer limited to indicating how to get from one location to another. They can suggest where to go shopping on the way or plan several synchronized itineraries for groups of travelers. Along with these developments, information about stopovers evolves from mere additional data to a crucial part of the itinerary. However, current time-based visualizations of itineraries cannot adequately convey the stopovers contained in an itinerary. We propose a time-location-based itinerary visualization that can be used when planning trips, which allows for the easy comparison of itineraries with different routes, and for aligning itineraries of several travelers in collaborative scenarios. We describe the visualization concept and report on a user study that confirms the basic ideas and provides a number of insights on how the visualization can be developed further.

The number of networked “smart devices” available in everyday environments is rapidly increasing; however, most adopt mutually incompatible networks, protocols, and application programming interfaces. In previous work, we introduced a variety of adaptive middleware techniques that enables a user's commodity mobile device (e.g., a smartphone) to serve as an adaptive gateway between mutually incompatible devices - providing service adaptation and protocol translation services through plug-ins that can be installed on-the-fly. In this paper, we present a complementary set of novel smart space design tools, which enable non-programmers to visually “remix” their ambient environments in new, playful and potentially unforeseen ways using an intuitive flow-graph model. Visual designs can be sent over the network to the user's mobile device, which instantiates them during runtime. This paper presents a detailed overview of the approach, introduces our fully functional prototype, and presents a user study that provides encouraging first results.

Massive amounts of data for data mining consist of natural language data. A challenge in natural language is to translate the data into a particular language. Machine translation can do the translation automatically. However, the models trained on data from a domain tend to perform poorly for different domains. One way to resolve this issue is to train domain adaptation translation and language models. In this work, we use visualizations to analyze the similarities of domains and explore domain detection methods by using text clustering and domain language models to discover the domain of the test data. Furthermore, we present domain adaptation language models based on tunable discounting mechanism and domain interpolation. A cross-domain evaluation of the language models is performed based on perplexity, in which considerable improvements are obtained. The performance of the domain adaptation models are also evaluated in Chinese-to-English machine translation tasks. The experimental BLEU scores indicate that the domain adaptation system significantly outperforms the baseline especially in domain adaptation scenarios. © 2015 - IOS Press and the authors. Many recent methods for perspective shape from shading (SfS) are based on formulations in terms of partial differential equations (PDEs). However, while the quality of such methods steadily improves, their lacking robustness is still an open issue. In this context, variational methods seem to be a promising alternative, since they allow to incorporate smoothness assumptions that have proven to be useful formany other tasks in computer vision. Surprisingly, however, suchmethods have hardly been considered for perspective SfS so far. In our article we address this problem and develop a novel variational model for this task. By combining building blocks of recent PDE-based methods such as a Lambertian reflectance model and camera-centred illumination with a discontinuitypreserving second-order smoothness term, we obtain a variational method for perspective SfS that offers by construction an improved degree of robustness compared to existing PDE-based approaches. Our experiments confirm the success of our strategy. They show that embedding the assumptions of PDE-based approaches into a variational model with a suitable smoothness term can be very beneficial – in particular in scenarios with noise or partially missing information. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2015.

Recording of eye movement data can help to understand where and at what participants look. However, analyzing eye movement data is a time consuming task. Using visualization techniques in the analysis process can help to uncover concealed relationships within the data and can therefore be seen as one means in the analysis of eye movement data. The most well known visualization techniques in eye tracking are heat maps or scanpaths. In recent years more visualization techniques have been developed, as for example scaled traces [Goldberg and Helfman 2010], eyePatterns [West et al. 2006], or eSeeTrack [Tsang et al. 2010].

Eye tracking technology is becoming easier and cheaper to use, resulting in its increasing application to numerous fields of research. The data collected during an eye tracking experiment can be analyzed by statistical methods and/or with visualization techniques. visualizations can reveal characteristics of fixations, saccades, and scanpath structures. In this survey, we present an overview of visualization techniques for eye tracking data and describe their functionality. We classify the visualization techniques using nine categories. The categories are based on properties of eye tracking data, including aspects of the stimuli and the viewer, and on properties of the visualization techniques. The classification of about 90 publications including technical as well as application papers with modifications of common visualization techniques are described in more detail. One major element in Concurrent Design is the central data model. It allows the various disciplines to share the latest information and to make immediate use of them within their domain specific tools and models. As a successor of the Integrated Design Model, in 2014 the European Space Agency (ESA) released the Open Concurrent Design Tool (OCDT), which aims to be the reference and standard model for European entities performing space system studies during early as well as later phases. This tool, including its web-based server and user interface supporting elements (such as MS Excel Add-ins), is developed in a way that it is not only limited to space system and mission design, but can be used also in other fields such as System-of-systems (SoS) architecture definition and evaluation, which is becoming an emerging topic for European and international collaborations. Instead of just looking at the technical aspects of a system, SoS-studies provide an opportunity to analyze how to share resources and assets amongst institutions, organizations or nations more efficiently and how to provide integrated and more advanced services. However, due to the different nature and rules of SoS, the OCDT requires certain adaptations regarding domain specific tool interfaces, dedicated data libraries, as well as a SoS-specific data flow and representations to the users. Several studies were performed on ESA’s side in advance, to prepare an initial set of requirements for such an evolution of the tools and processes which eventually led to a project called "Development and Validation of a Generic systems‐of‐systems Concurrent Engineering Model (CESoS)". It has been established by ESA and awarded to a consortium which has experience in Concurrent Design, software development and system architecture definitions. © 2015, American institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Inc, AIAA. A key factor to assure success of a visualization technique is how efficiently users perceive information using this visualization technique. This efficiency is strongly correlated with visualization parameters which we will summarize in the following with the term cognitive ergonomics. In this chapter we will motivate the reader to study cognitive ergonomics in visualization using an interdisciplinary approach. This interdisciplinary approach is based on eye tracking data visualization, ontology based visualization models, and cognitive simulations. Figure 1 shows the chapter structure, and the interdisciplinary approach we suggest. © 2014 IFIP International Federation for Information Processing.
