Search results comprising of unstructured documents are traditionally displayed as plain lists, whereas the formulation of complex queries can be aided by comprehensive visualizations that highlight relevant attributes of the search results. We propose a visualization concept that incorporates a sentiment analysis of aspects mentioned in examined documents. Our concept provides a means of iteratively refining the query based upon preliminary search results. After an abstract description of the concept, we elaborate on its usage in a practical example of filtering customer reviews in order to choose a restaurant based on user-defined preferences.

Several algorithms, approaches, and implementations have been developed to support comparison of scan paths and finding of interesting scan path structures. In this work we contribute a visual approach to support scan path comparison. A key feature of this approach is the combination of a clustering algorithm using Levenshtein distance with the parallel scan path visualization technique. The combination of computational methods with an interactive visualization allows us to use both the power of pattern finding algorithms and the human ability to visually recognize patterns. To use the concept in practice we implemented the approach in a prototype and show its application in two scan path analysis scenarios from automobile usability testing and visualization research.

Data visualizations evaluated in an eye tracking experiment can be analyzed by using areas of interest (AOIs) on the data visualization. Usually, AOIs are defined manually and have to be adjusted if the layout of the stimulus is changed. Since this manual adjustment is time-consuming, we have developed a concept to automatically annotate graphical elements of visualizations using information from an ontology. This automatic annotation allows us to keep the information about AOIs when the layout of a visualization is changed. To evaluate our concept, we have implemented a prototype with the visualization framework D3. The paper concludes with a discussion of the concept's limitations, its application on graphical user interfaces, and a future perspective on this approach.

Eye tracking studies have become one means to evaluate user behavior. For example, eye tracking is used in marketing research, psychology, human-computer interaction, or visualization. Analyzing eye movement data can help to find where on a stimulus and at what areas of a stimulus a participant focused on. Eye tracking can be used besides classical benchmark metrics such as completion times and accuracy rates of correctly given answers. However, evaluating eye movement data is a time consuming task, as a large amount of data has to be analyzed. Typically, multiple software systems have to be used, each having a different format of the data. This leads to tedious work, as the analyst has to reformat the data and learn how to use different software systems. Therefore, we suggest to analyze eye movement data using workflow technology. This allows to automatically analyze the data, and have a reproducible result. The analyst is not concerned with the technicalities and can rather focus on the interpretation of the analyzed data. Allowing an automatic evaluation using the workflow technology, requires that the analysis functionality is available via web services. In this paper, we contribute a workflow system based on web service operations. The web service offers functionality of an eye tracking analysis framework for the automatic analysis of eye movement data. The workflow system can be used to model and execute different types of eye tracking evaluations.

Geospatial analysis of location-enabled social media networks can be utilized to generate vital insights in areas where situational awareness is important, such as disaster prevention and crisis response. However, several recent approaches struggle under the challenge that only a small fraction of the data is actually provided with precise geo-tags or even GPS information of their origin. In this work we introduce two strategies that are suitable to assign probable locations of origin to social media messages of unknown locations. They are based on aggregated knowledge about the author and/or the textual content of the message. Using our prototype implementation and a collected dataset comprising more than one year of geolocated Twitter data, we evaluate the effectiveness of our strategies. Our results show that we can locate up to 74% of all messages that were written in specific cities and about 20% of messages written in specific districts.

The VAST Challenge 2014 MC3 featured a dataset of roughly 4000 microblog messages and 200 emergency callcenter reports produced in the fictitious city of Abila. The task was to identify relevant events and outliers in the data and highlight observations that are connected to an earlier kidnapping of employees from a company called GASTECH. In contrast to earlier challenges, the focus was on real-time data processing. The microblog messages were hosted on a web-server that simulated real-time streaming of the data during a 4.5 hour period and the challenge participants had to monitor and analyze them as they were transmitted. To tackle the challenge we developed ScatterScopes, a real-time enabled visual analytics system that fosters understanding of ongoing events by means of spatiotemporal overview and hierarchical drilldown. Trends and anomalies in space, time and content can be quickly identified with the system using interactive maps, sentiment timelines and textual search. Once interesting or suspicious subsets of elements are selected, their inherent topic structure can be further dissected based on a highly interactive treemap of message clusters. Subset selection and recombination is furthermore supported by a filter-and-flow mechanism that can also be used to formulate and test hypotheses based on Boolean logic. ScatterScopes has been used by our team to successfully identify and describe all events hidden in the MC3 data streams.

Visual analytics aims to be scalable in several aspects, one of which is being able to handle large data volumes in an interactive system. This can be achieved by designing efficient analysis and visualization algorithms that ensure short response times to user interactions or by providing appropriate hardware. With increasing data sizes, however, an analyst will eventually have to wait for the completion of computations or renderings. For these cases, we present a framework which remains responsive and keeps the analyst informed on and in control of pending operations. Our implementation builds on performing complex analysis and rendering tasks in the background, providing progress indications, displaying preliminary results, and allowing changes to task elements while continuing to evaluate others. We demonstrate the advantages of our approach for huge data sets by analyzing a real-world public transportation vehicle data set.

Word clouds have emerged as a straightforward and visually appealing visualization method for text. They are used in various contexts as a means to provide an overview by distilling text down to those words that appear with highest frequency. Typically, this is done in a static way as pure text summarization. We think, however, that there is a larger potential to this simple yet powerful visualization paradigm in text analytics. In this work, we explore the usefulness of word clouds for general text analysis tasks. We developed a prototypical system called the Word Cloud Explorer that relies entirely on word clouds as a visualization method. It equips them with advanced natural language processing, sophisticated interaction techniques, and context information. We show how this approach can be effectively used to solve text analysis tasks and evaluate it in a qualitative user study.

Free-hand interaction with large displays is getting more common, for example in public settings and exertion games. Adding haptic feedback offers the potential for more realistic and immersive experiences. While vibrotactile feedback is well known, electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) has not yet been explored in free-hand interaction with large displays. EMS offers a wide range of different strengths and qualities of haptic feedback. In this paper we first systematically investigate the design space for haptic feedback. Second, we experimentally explore differences between strengths of EMS and vibrotactile feedback. Third, based on the results, we evaluate EMS and vibrotactile feedback with regard to different virtual objects (soft, hard) and interaction with different gestures (touch, grasp, punch) in front of a large display. The results provide a basis for the design of haptic feedback that is appropriate for the given type of interaction and the material.
