In order to investigate the performance of visual feature extraction method for automatic image annotation, three visual feature extraction methods, namely discrete cosine transform, Gabor transform and discrete wavelet transform, are studied in this paper. These three methods are used to extract low-level visual feature vectors from images in a given database separately, then these feature vectors are mapped to high-level semantic words to annotate images with labels in a given semantic label set. As it is more efficient to depict the visual features of an image by the feature distribution than to resort to image segmentation technology for semantic image blocks, this paper is going to find out which of the three feature extraction methods performs better in image annotation based on the distribution of feature vectors from the image. The performance of three different kinds of feature extraction method is fully analyzed, and it is found that discrete cosine transform method is more suitable for Gaussian mixture model in automatic image annotation.

In this paper, we proposed a visual position calibration method using colored rectangle signboards for a mobile robot which is designed to work in a room environment. The rectangle signboards are placed in several known positions. Using Canny algorithm to detect the edge of color area to calculate the vanishing points in the image of the signboard, it is possible to obtain the relative direction and distance between the signboard and the robot by a single image. Experiments of position calibration were conducted. The results showed this method is effective and the errors between the set up positions and the experimental results were about 1.5 degrees and 3 cm in an array position.

The choice of relevant features is very decisive in handwriting recognition rate. Our aim is to present some useful structural and statistical features and see their degree of variability. In this paper, we start with a description of the variability of the Arabic handwriting and the way how to reduce it. Four kinds of feature sets used by our handwriting systems are then presented evaluated and discussed. The comparison is carried on a database of images from IFN/ENIT databases. The neural network multilayer perceptrons is our method of classification. A contrastive study of these primitives is done according to recognition their time and memory consuming and their variability degree.

Traditional path planning methods are too slow to meet the real-time requirement in practical applications. In order to solve this problem, an idea of path net was proposed in this paper. The path planning procedure is divided into two steps: network segment planning and segment assembling. The first step was done with Fast Marching Method, including port selection of segment and network segment planning. Second step, the A* searching method was chosen to select segments for assembling. Experiments demonstrated that our method can obtain an optimal route in a few of seconds after the start and goal are given while several minutes are needed for traditional methods. © 2009 Copyright SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering.

It is difficult to meet both direction and curvature constraints for traditional Fast Marching (FM) method in path planning. Based on adjusting the cost function in Eiknoal equation-the control equation for FM, a new model for computing the integrated cost function was presented in this paper. A relationship formula about curvature radius was obtained and three kinds of adjusting strategies were given;two of them were used to modify the route to meet with the requires of turning constraint in this paper. Experiments showed that the improved model can be used to plan the path with FMM for agent such as unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) or robot, which is limited to pass through the scene matching areas. And our preliminary experiments demonstrated that the strategies are feasible and efficient to obtain path with certain curvature radius. The model can also be used to represent the problem such as an aircraft flying in a flow field. © 2009 Copyright SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering.

X-ray scatter leads to erroneous calculations of dual-energy digital mammography (DEDM). The existing methods for scatter correction in DEDM are using anti-scatter grids or the pinhole-array interpolation method which is complicated and impractical. In this paper, a scatter correction algorithm for DEDM is developed based on the knowledge that scatter radiation in mammograms varies slowly and most pixels in mammograms are non-microcalcification pixels. The proposed algorithm only uses the information of low-energy (LE) and high-energy (HE) images. And it doesn't need anti-scatter grids, lead sheet and extra exposures. Our results show that the proposed scatter correction algorithm is effective. When using the simple least-squares fit and linear interpolation, the scatter to primary ratio (SPR) can be decreased from ~33.4% to ~2.8% for LE image and from ~26.2% to ~0.8% for HE image. Applying scatter correction to LE and HE images, the resultant background signal in the DE (dual-energy) calcification image an be reduced significantly. ©2009 SPIE.

3D reconstruction of medical image and orthographic views provide useful information for doctors. In this paper, firstly, reconstruction of medical image based on MC (Marching cubes) algorithm is implemented using Microsoft Visual C ++ and the VTK (Visualization ToolKit). Secondly, to solve the problems of huge quantities of triangle meshes and stepping effects, optimizations such as mesh simplification and mesh smoothing are presented. Finally, the method to obtain the orientation of the resliced imaging planes is presented and the orthographic views are obtained based on it. The experimental results show that optimal methods are effective and the method to get the orientation of the resliced imaging planes is practical.

Human matching between different fields of view is a difficult problem in intelligent video surveillance; whereas fusing multiple features has become a strong tool to solve it. In order to guide the fusion scheme, it is necessary to evaluate the matching performance of these features. In this paper, four typical features are chosen for the evaluation. They are the color histogram, UV chromaticity, major color spectrum histogram, and scale-invariant features (SIFT). Quantities of video data are collected to test their general accuracy, robustness, and real-time applicability. The robustness is measured under the conditions of illumination changes, Gaussian and salt noises,foreground errors, resolution changes, and camera angle differences. The experimental results show that the four features bear distinctive performances under the different conditions, which will provide important references for the feature fusion methods.

This paper is about a vision-based system that automatically monitors intermodal freight trains for the quality of how the loads (containers) are placed along the train. An accurate and robust algorithm to segment the foreground of containers in videos of the moving train is indispensable for this purpose. Given a video of a moving train consisting of containers of different types, this paper presents a method exploiting the information in both frequency and spatial domains to segment these containers. This method can accurately segment all types of containers under a variety of background conditions, e.g illumination variations and moving clouds, in the train videos shot by a fixed camera. The accuracy and robustness of the proposed method are substantiated through a large number of experiments on real data of train videos.

Improved algorithm for multiple infrared targets tracking

Based on the mean field Monte Carlo (MFMC) algorithm, an improved one for multiple infrared targets tracking on basis of particle filter was proposed. In this new algorithm, Mean-Shift is integrated in the sampling of particles in MFMC, so before the weighting of particles, Mean-Shift will move them to the place where reaches maximum similarity and then the effectiveness of particles is greatly improved. This algorithm also revises the mechanism for message assessment in MFMC with the consideration of the sizes of targets, and it improves the self-adaptability of the mechanism. The experimental results show that this new algorithm is more robust, accurate and efficient than MFMC. It can effectively solve the issue of multiple infrared targets tracking.
