The real-life customer servicing databases share a useful characteristic which can be properly exploited to solve a common problem with the data-bases themselves. This useful characteristic is that either remark or memo fields are always included in the databases;customer service representatives can use these fields to write down specific things about the service records. This design helps alleviate the following common difficulty with the categorization of customer-service-related problems: customer requested service records are often misclassified owing to human ignorance or bad design of problem categorization. In this paper we propose an ontology-supported technique to preprocess the remark fields, trying to discover meaningful information to help recategorize misclassified service records. This process restores the database into one with more meaningful data in each record, which facilitates the mining of better association rules. The technique was applied to a real-life trouble shooting database obtained from a telecommunication company. The results show a substantial improvement in the quality of mined trouble shooting rules can be obtained. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.

An arbitrary pattern exposure system has been developed by employing a liquid crystal display (LCD) with 1600 × 1200 pixels for the formation of projection images in place of a conventional reticle. The minimum pattern size becomes 11.5 μm, which corresponds to the aperture size of each pixel on the LCD. For the purpose of quick turnaround time (TAT), the exposure system was directly connected to the circuit design system with the transmission control protocol/internet protocol network. From the experimental results on patterning of a typical electronic circuit data with the area of 46 × 46 mm, it was confirmed that the TAT from the output of design data to the finish of the exposure becomes less than 28 min. By using this system, reduction of the production cost in the printed wiring boards fabrication is expected. © 2005 IEEE.

The development of wireless communication technology creates a mobile hospital that provides "e-link" between patients and medical personnel 24 hours a day and seven days a week. In this way, mobile hospital can provide a continuous and comprehensive healthcare for anybody, in any time and anywhere. Such communication pathway is capable and reliable not only in handing large amount of medical data such as vital signs or cardiac rhythm but also in transmitting voice, picture, and video in real time. Based on the information received, medical personnel could make necessary medical decisions and provide care instructions to the patient or the on-site care providers remotely and cost effectively.

In DNA clone classification, a key step is the cluster analysis of fingerprint data. A good algorithm - GCP (greedy clique partition) is presented, recently. In this paper, a high efficient implementation of GCP is presented, and a little defect of GCP is advanced. Our experimental result on simulated demonstrates that the GCP is more efficient and more accurate than other algorithms such as UPGMA, CLUSTER and CLICK.

Low frequency fluctuations in light intensity of 340 nm and 280 nm GaN-based light emitting diodes (LEDs) are compared with noise properties of other commercially available UV and visible wavelength LEDs and halogen lamps. At low frequencies, LEDs can exhibit lower levels of noise than halogen lamps. An LED noise quality factor β is estimated for the UV LEDs. © World Scientific Publishing Company.

The general objective of EXOCET/D is to develop, implement and test specific instruments aimed at exploring, describing, quantifying and monitoring biodiversity in deep-sea fragmented habitats as well as at identifying links between community structure and environmental dynamics. Onboard experimental devices will complement the approach, enabling experiments on species physiology. The EXOCET/D working fields include: video and acoustic imagery, in situ analysis of physico-chemical factors, quantitative sampling of macro- and micro-organisms, in vivo experiments, integration of multidisciplinary data, implementation on European deep-submersibles and a final phase of technical and scientific validation. In this paper, we explore the convergence of the caching and streaming technologies for Internet multimedia. The paper describes a design for a streaming and caching architecture to be deployed on broadband networks. The basis of the work is the proposed Internet standard, Real Time Streaming Protocol (RTSP), likely to be the de-facto standard for web-based A/V caching and streaming, in the near future. The proxies are all managed by an `Intelligent Agent' or `Broker' - this has been designed as an enhanced RTSP proxy server that maintains the state information that is so essential in streaming of media data. In addition, all the caching algorithms run on the broker. Having an intelligent agent or broker ensures that the `simple' caching servers can be easily embedded into the network. However, RTSP does nor have the right model for doing broker based streaming/caching architecture. The work reported here is an attempt to contribute towards that end.

A support system construction for multimedia information data acquisition is proposed, where the multimedia means the five senses of a human being. Observed information from outside world is characterized by VAGOT (visual, acoustic, gustatory, olfactory and tactile) time series data. Here, multimedia information centers on image and sound, represented by membership functions. Fuzzy rules based on visual and acoustic information are used to identify the appropriate time interval on multimedia input data. When instruction of the user has temporal vagueness, rule base is updated by the support system based on fuzzy shift. This method is applied to one experiment that is related with the temporal boundary subset of various vehicles and the results show the feasibility of the proposed system.
