Field-programmable gate arrays provide a very flexible implementation platform that supports the development of tamper-proof networked embedded systems. In order to achieve a secure mode of operation, many of these systems employ keyed-hash message authentication code, to provide security against intentional tampering. Since this algorithm is of high computational complexity, this paper utilizes various hardware-software co-design techniques for its implementation, and compares the results to standard software. The considered techniques vary in the degree of required design expertise and of how (software) functionalities are implemented in hardware logic.

Localization of sensor nodes is one of the key issues in wireless sensor networks. Next to the ability, to assign a phenomenon to a position, localization is a precondition for sensor network algorithms like geographic clustering and routing. A simple approach for coarse grained localization is centroid localization (CL), which was firstly presented by Bulusu et al. and assumes regularly arranged beacons. The localization accuracy was improved by various centroid-based algorithms, which use approximate distances to improve location estimation through weighting beacons in range, e.g. weighted centroid localization (WCL). Nevertheless, all these approaches have in common an increased localization error near network borders. In this work, we investigate this error and present two strategies to reduce the localization error of border area nodes.

Service-oriented architectures (SOA) are nowadays a wide-spread software building approach. The fields of application ranges from embedded devices up to enterprise and business solutions. For distributed services and devices it makes sense to have a mechanism for remote administration to manage their life cycle. Technological standards like OSGi (see section 3) provide such a life cycle management, but device-oriented Web service technologies like the devices profile for Web services (DPWS) do not specifies such a mechanism as a standard. In this paper we present a service-based life cycle manager for an implementation of DPWS to manage the services of a device during runtime through remote reconfiguration. The advantage of the presented solution is the ability to be platform and language independent by using a script-based interaction between the life- cycle-manager and the individual services.

During the last years, recent technological advances enabled the development of tiny devices equipped with radio, micro controller and sensors, called sensor nodes. Collaborating networks of such devices, known as wireless sensor networks (WSNs), are subject of many researches. A couple of network centric tasks like data transmission and aggregation, self-organisation, localization and energy awareness have been focused in various publications. Researches, e.g. IPv6 over low power WPAN (6LoWPAN), are going to standardize the connection of sensor nodes with common Internet protocols. Nevertheless, until now proprietary techniques are used within most networks, especially for the coupling towards the outside world as well as the data management. Depending on WSN hardware and software, the gateway software as well as storage and presentation of data differs for most sensor networks. In this work we present an infrastructure which bases upon a generic gateway. Standardized dataset will be stored by this device using sensor Web enablement (SWE) and standard protocols. By use of devices profile for Web services (DPWS) plug and play abilities as well as a comfortable query interface for presentation is realized.

Device centric service-oriented architectures have shown to be applicable in the automation industry for interconnecting manufacturing devices and enterprise systems, thus, establishing comprehensive heterogeneous service architectures. A similar scenario can also be found in the domain of integrated circuits where a growing number of components is being interconnected by a network inside a single chip. Thus, service-oriented concepts seem promising to be used for the abstract composition of on-chip components. However, tight constraints on power consumption and performance have to be considered when a compound service shall be executed. In this paper, it will be described that the consideration of such constraints is profoundly beneficial. From this starting point, we argue that such an approach can also be useful in the context of wireless sensor networks with its large number of distributed, heterogeneous sensor nodes and limited energy sources.

Home healthcare can be divided into monitoring and assistance scenarios. In both scenarios, miscellaneous devices are applied for dedicated sensor or actuator functionalities. The requirements and assumptions for the different nodes split the devices in three different classes with particular characteristics concerning energy consumption, power supply, memory, computing power, and bandwidth. Nevertheless, the number of nodes and complexity of setups require new concepts like Service-oriented Architectures to solve arising problems. In this paper, the Devices Profile for Web Services is suggested as comprehensive middleware for all three device classes. Hence, Web services technologies, which are already applied in the internet and in automation industry, can avoid interoperability problems of sensors and actors in the domain of home healthcare also.

In this paper, the microwave performance of coplanar waveguides (CPWs) fabricated on high-resistivity silicon (HRS) substrates with various polysilicon film thicknesses was investigated. CPWs were fabricated on p-type silicon substrates with resistivities of 6000-8000 ¿-cm. Polysilicon films with thicknesses ranging from 100 to 900 nm were deposited by LPCVD, in which a 300 nm-deposited polysilicon was generally used as surface passication layer on the HRS substrates. Subsequently, the oxide layer was deposited on the polysilicon layer by PECVD, and a pure aluminum film was evaporated and patterned to form the 50-¿-CPW test structures. The CPWs were characterized through S-parameter measurements for up to 40 GHz by using an HP-8510 network analyzer. Experimental results show that the microwave attenuation loss can be influenced by a small variation of polysilicon layer thickness, especially when the thickness is smaller. Thicker polysilicon layers lead to higher grain boundary density, hence, free carriers can be rapidly trapped within grain boundary interfaces of the polysilicon, and the surface recombination velocity can be enhanced, thus, reducing the conductivity and bias-dependence of the surface layers. Furthermore, the bias effect on the HRS with various polysilicon thicknesses was taken into account as well.

In this paper conceptions and architectural considerations of the OSAMI project and their specializations towards the requirements of the e-health domain by the German subproject (OSAMI-D) are described. Along with the expected shift of healthcare service between stationary towards ambulatory care, a standardized way of integrating medical data acquired at home into the IT infrastructure of hospitals and the synchronization with medical workflows have to be implemented. Therefore, the OSAMI-D project will provide open source components that implement the required interfaces. Preliminary results of the requirements analysis and the implementation of first domain-specific services are presented. These services are used to realize two home care scenarios, which support ambulant cardiologic rehabilitation (indoor and outdoor). Special emphasis is placed on standards and formats for the communication and storage of patient data.

This paper investigates the possibility of assessing the die attach quality by the spectral analysis of the recorded device time response. The conducted analyses of the measured and the simulated time constant spectra of the thermal response allowed the explanation of the anomalous electrical oscillations observed during the operation of a power converter.© EDA Publishing/THERMINIC 2008.
