Full life-cycle cost model for practical application of solar energy system

In pursuit of carbon neutrality, a swift transformation is underway in the global energy structure, marked by a consistent rise in the installed capacity of solar energy systems. Meanwhile, the substantial reduction of government subsidies in the solar industry intensifies focus on the economic viability of solar energy installations. In this study, we propose a full life-cycle cost model, named the F-LCC model, for calculating the cost of the solar energy system on the long term, e.g., 20–30 years. This model integrates replacement costs, residual value calculation, interest rate, and inflation impacts while supporting market price estimation for individual components, thereby aiding feasibility analysis in the early project phase. We design an investment cost recovery algorithm based on the F-LCC model to calculate the break-even electricity price for solar energy system. Moreover, we analyze component cost distributions, Net Present Value (NPV), and Discounted Payback Period (DPP) for grid-connected and off-grid solar energy systems with capacities of 10 kWp and 100 kWp in the Chinese market. The results show that the proposed model, compared to other models, captures the fact that payback times are longer. In a solar energy system without storage, solar panels have the highest component cost share at 28.8%. With battery storage, batteries dominate the total cost, reaching up to 74.6%. And the the grid-connected systems DPP ranging from a minimum of 5.5 to a maximum of 7.0 years by grid-connected electricity price, while off-grid systems require at least 19.9 years. The 10 kWp off-grid fixed mounting system’s break-even price being 137.1% higher than its grid-connected counterpart. In addition, tracking-mount systems offer greater cost-reduction potential than fixed installations, with the payback period reduced by 20% for 100 kWp grid-connected systems and 15% for off-grid systems. Context-Aware Human Behavior Prediction Using Multimodal Large Language Models: Challenges and Insights

Predicting human behavior in shared environments is crucial for safe and efficient human-robot interaction. Traditional data-driven methods to that end are pre-trained on domain-specific datasets, activity types, and prediction horizons. In contrast, the recent breakthroughs in Large Language Models (LLMs) promise open-ended cross-domain generalization to describe various human activities and make predictions in any context. In particular, Multimodal LLMs (MLLMs) are able to integrate information from various sources, achieving more contextual awareness and improved scene understanding. The difficulty in applying general-purpose MLLMs directly for prediction stems from their limited capacity for processing large input sequences, sensitivity to prompt design, and expensive fine-tuning. In this paper, we present a systematic analysis of applying pre-trained MLLMs for context-aware human behavior prediction. To this end, we introduce a modular multimodal human activity prediction framework that allows us to benchmark various MLLMs, input variations, In-Context Learning (ICL), and autoregressive techniques. Our evaluation indicates that the best-performing framework configuration is able to reach 92.8% semantic similarity and 66.1% exact label accuracy in predicting human behaviors in the target frame. © 2025, CC BY.

Federated learning (FL) emerges as a potential solution for enabling multiple terminal devices to collaboratively accomplish computational tasks within an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) swarm. However, traditional FL approaches, predicated on synchronous data aggregation, are not feasible for a UAV swarm owing to the inherently variable and dynamic nature of their communication networks compared with terrestrial systems. Furthermore, the data procured by UAVs is often highly heterogeneous, attributable to disparities in deployment environments and device attributes. Considering the distinct flight paths and unique operational conditions encountered by different UAVs, a considerable amount of data remains unlabeled. To tackle the challenges associated with asynchronous operations and the prevalence of unlabeled data, we introduce a novel framework termed Semi-synchronous FL with Cross-Sharpness and Layer-Freezing (SFedXL), tailored for a UAV swarm. In particular, we devise a cross-sharpness model training strategy aimed at optimizing the utilization of both labeled and unlabeled datasets. Additionally, we propose an innovative semi-synchronous model aggregation protocol, complemented by client-specific layer-freezing and client cluster scheduling, designed to expedite the training process. Our simulation results indicate that the proposed algorithm surpasses current FL methods in terms of object recognition accuracy and communication efficiency, albeit with a trade-off of increased local computation latency. © 2014 IEEE.

Actual real-world domains are characterised by uncertain situations in which acting and use of resources require embracing risk. Performing actions in such domains always entails costs of consuming some resource, such as time, money, or energy, where the knowledge about these costs can range from totally known to totally unknown and even unknowable probabilities of costs. Think of robotic and marine domains, where actions and their costs are nondeterministic due to the uncertainty of factors, such as obstacles and weather conditions. Choosing which action to perform considering its cost on the available resource requires taking a stance on risk. Thus, these domains call for not only planning under uncertainty but also planning while embracing risk. Taking Hierarchical Task Network (HTN) planning as a widely used planning technique in real-world applications, one can observe that existing approaches do not account for risk. That is, computing most probable or optimal plans using actions with single-valued costs is only enough to express risk neutrality. In this work, we postulate that HTN planning can become risk aware by considering expected utility theory, a representative concept of decision theory that enables choosing actions considering a probability distribution of their costs and a given risk attitude expressed using a utility function. In particular, we introduce a general framework for HTN planning that allows modelling risk and uncertainty using a probability distribution of action costs upon which we define risk-aware HTN planning as an approach that accounts for the different risk attitudes and allows computing plans that go beyond risk neutrality. In fact, we lay out that computing risk-aware plans requires finding plans with the highest expected utility. Finally, we argue that it is possible for HTN planning agents to solve specialised risk-aware HTN planning problems by adapting some existing HTN planning approaches. Copyright © 2022, The Authors. Software architecture for next-generation AI planning systems

Artificial Intelligence (AI) planning is a flourishing research and development discipline that provides powerful tools for searching a course of action that achieves some user goal. While these planning tools show excellent performance on benchmark planning problems, they represent challenging software systems when it comes to their use and integration in real-world applications. In fact, even in-depth understanding of their internal mechanisms does not guarantee that one can successfully set up, use and manipulate existing planning tools. We contribute toward alleviating this situation by proposing a service-oriented planning architecture to be at the core of the ability to design, develop and use next-generation AI planning systems. We collect and classify common planning capabilities to form the building blocks of the planning architecture. We incorporate software design principles and patterns into the architecture to allow for usability, interoperability and reusability of the planning capabilities. Our prototype planning system demonstrates the potential of our approach for rapid prototyping and flexibility of system composition. The key goals in learning Bayesian networks (BNs) from data are to identify significant statistical relationships between variables and to build a Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG) that represents these relationships through Joint Probability Distributions. Most research relies on score-based or conditional test methods for model selection. However, when using real-world data, it can be challenging to identify whether the learned DAG represents the underlying relations inherent in the limited datasets, particularly when evaluating data obtained from multiple independent sources. This study presents a methodology to assess the credible interval for both the existence and direction of each edge within Bayesian networks derived from data. Furthermore, it explores the fusion of models acquired from distinct and independent datasets. This approach enables the Bayesian learning of Bayesian Networks (BNs) from data by treating the uncertainty associated with the existence and orientation of each edge as a random variable. By evaluating the probability of the orientation of each edge, it is possible to suggest the existence of a potential latent variable within the dataset. If an edge exhibits equiprobable directions and is verified to exist, it becomes a plausible hypothesis for a latent variable. The Fast Causal Algorithm, originally introduced by [1], is the foundation of this approach. Finally, by employing a maximum a posteriori estimation, the most prominent edges and their respective orientations are identified and employed to create the leading DAG. We present our findings in simulated datasets with different length sizes. By comparing the structure of the learned DAGs with existing structures and evaluating the inference capabilities of the final BN, we establish that our approach achieves results comparable to the most recent studies in the field, while offering insights into the model’s reliability and improving the use of the data.

Within the paradigm of Evolving and Adaptive Intelligent systems, the Electrical Power System (EPS) represents a Critical Infrastructure demanding robust reliability metrics. This study pioneers the application of Variable Neighborhood Search (VNS) heuristic to the Optimal Switch Allocation (OSA) problem in the EPS. Adapting neighborhood structures and local search methods, we consider the joint allocation of Manual Switches and Remote-Controlled switches, addressing interdependencies. Results highlight VNS efficacy in navigating OSA challenges, showcasing its adaptability in an evolving system. Comparative analyses endorse VNS as a valuable tool for addressing EPS reliability within the dynamic landscape of evolving and adaptive intelligent systems.

The world of spatial data is split into individual data source islands that have different thematic or spatial focuses. When attempting to integrate those data sources, severe challenges arise, since for most GIS application domains a spatial integration schema does not exist. This is also true for the newly emerging domain of mobile, context-aware applications. Since the users of these systems are mobile, transborder access to spatial data or context models is crucial for global deployment. The basis for this work is the Nexus Augmented World Schema, a conceptual schema that serves as an integration standard for autonomous spatial context servers. This paper analyzes some major spatial data standards, especially with respect to the requirements of a spatial integration schema for context-aware applications and illustrates the Nexus approach.

DELTA: Decomposed Efficient Long-Term Robot Task Planning using Large Language Models

Recent advancements in Large Language Models (LLMs) have sparked a revolution across many research fields. In robotics, the integration of common-sense knowledge from LLMs into task and motion planning has drastically advanced the field by unlocking unprecedented levels of context awareness. Despite their vast collection of knowledge, large language models may generate infeasible plans due to hallucinations or missing domain information. To address these challenges and improve plan feasibility and computational efficiency, we introduce DELTA, a novel LLM-informed task planning approach. By using scene graphs as environment representations within LLMs, DELTA achieves rapid generation of precise planning problem descriptions. To enhance planning performance, DELTA decomposes long-term task goals with LLMs into an autoregressive sequence of sub-goals, enabling automated task planners to efficiently solve complex problems. In our extensive evaluation, we show that DELTA enables an efficient and fully automatic task planning pipeline, achieving higher planning success rates and significantly shorter planning times compared to the state of the art. © 2024, CC BY.
