In realistic distributed optimization scenarios, individual nodes possess only partial information and communicate over bandwidth constrained channels. For this reason, the development of efficient distributed algorithms is essential. In our paper we addresses the challenge of unconstrained distributed optimization. In our scenario each node’s local function exhibits strong convexity with Lipschitz continuous gradients. The exchange of information between nodes occurs through 3-bit bandwidth-limited channels (i.e., nodes exchange messages represented by a only 3-bits). Our proposed algorithm respects the network’s bandwidth constraints by leveraging zoom-in and zoom-out operations to adjust quantizer parameters dynamically. We show that during our algorithm’s operation nodes are able to converge to the exact optimal solution. Furthermore, we show that our algorithm achieves a linear convergence rate to the optimal solution. Accurate nuclei segmentation in histopathological images is crucial for cancer diagnosis. Automating this process offers valuable support to clinical experts, as manual annotation is time-consuming and prone to human errors. However, automating nuclei segmentation presents challenges due to uncertain cell boundaries, intricate staining, and diverse structures. In this paper, we present a segmentation approach that combines the U-Net architecture with a DenseNet-121 backbone, harnessing the strengths of both to capture comprehensive contextual and spatial information. Our model introduces the Wavelet-guided channel attention module to enhance cell boundary delineation, along with a learnable weighted global attention module for channel-specific attention. The decoder module, composed of an upsample block and convolution block, further refines segmentation in handling staining patterns. The experimental results conducted on two publicly accessible histopathology datasets, namely Monuseg and TNBC, underscore the superiority of our proposed model, demonstrating its potential to advance histopathological image analysis and cancer diagnosis. With the installation and use of large-scale photovoltaic systems around the world, the detection of photovoltaic system operation and maintenance has become increasingly important. This research uses a convolutional neural network training model to detect and classify the infrared near-field images of photovoltaic modules from small-scale photovoltaic plants in the laboratory. This model classifies the images into two categories: with and without hot spots, with a classification accuracy of 96.58%. The experimental results show that the convolutional neural network training model has a good classification result. © 2022 institute of Physics Publishing. All rights reserved.

This paper considers the problem of monitoring and adaptively estimating an environmental field, such as temperature or salinity, using an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV). The AUV moves in the field and persistently measures environmental scalars and its position in its local coordinate frame. The environmental scalars are approximately linearly distributed over the region of interest, and an adaptive estimator is designed to estimate the gradient. By orthogonal decomposition of the velocity of the AUV, a linear time-varying system is equivalently constructed, and the sufficient conditions on the motion of the AUV are established, under which the global exponential stability of the estimation error system is rigorously proved. Furthermore, an estimate of the exponential convergence rate is given, and a reference trajectory that maximizes the estimate of the convergence rate is obtained for the AUV to track. Numerical examples verify the stability and efficiency of the system.

Given the difficulty of recognizing ambiguous emotions in facial expression recognition tasks, we propose a visual-language model named CAER-CLIP to address this challenge. The proposed CAER-CLIP standed for Context-Aware Emotion Recognition (CAER), and were incorporated structure of the Contrastive Language–Image Pre-training (CLIP) model as promising alternative to classifier. There are two parts in CAER-CLIP model. In the visual part, facial expressions and contextual information of the image are simultaneously extracted to obtain the final feature embeddings, which are then used as a learnable “class” token for text-image pairing with desired module. In the textual part, we use text labels for emotion recognition classes as input. The outputs were merged to participate the comparative study to generated parameters of the model. The experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method and show that our CAER-CLIP outperforms the state-of-the-art results on the CAER benchmark. The ablation experiment verified the effectiveness of both the classifier-based and text-based (ours without classifier) models, demonstrating that our method with the CAER-CLIP structure performed better, and the incorporation of a text encoder in the deep network model architecture effectively enhancing recognition accuracy.

This paper develops an iterative learning control law for a class of nonlinear systems. The approach used to represent the nonlinear system dynamics is a Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy repetitive process that considers the two directions of information propagation. Then, the control action investigated is a state feedback control law combined with a PD-type feed-forward learning control law. Consequently, linear matrix inequality techniques can be used for control design. Furthermore, this approach allows the design of control action to satisfy the requirements on both the error convergence and the transient dynamics. Finally, an example demonstrates the properties of the new design.

Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) envisages a sustainable, safe, convenient, and affordable air transport system. In socio-technical transition of AAM, there are a number of trade-offs in ecosystem that need to be studied. Three perspectives on economic feasibility are explored: first, based on history of VTOL services and value of time estimates, we discuss whether AAM can provide customers with competitive mobility services; second, what are the stakeholders’ insights on the deployment of AAM; last, the experience in the development of autonomous driving technology, such as parallel intelligence, can inform future AAM research.

HabiCrowd: A High Performance Simulator for Crowd-Aware Visual Navigation

Visual navigation, a foundational aspect of Embodied AI (E-AI) and robotics has been extensively studied in the past few years. While many 3D simulators have been introduced for the visual navigation tasks, scarcely works have combined human dynamics, creating the gap between simulation and real-world applications. Furthermore, current 3D simulators incorporating human dynamics have several limitations, particularly in terms of computational efficiency, which is a promise of modern simulators. To overcome these issues, we introduce HabiCrowd, the new standard benchmark for crowd-aware visual navigation that includes a crowd dynamics model with diverse human settings into photorealistic environments. Empirical evaluations demonstrate that our proposed human dynamics model achieves state-of-the-art performance in collision avoidance while exhibiting superior computational efficiency compared to its counterparts. We leverage HabiCrowd to conduct several comprehensive studies on crowd-aware visual navigation tasks and human-robot interactions. Open-Vocabulary Affordance Detection using Knowledge Distillation and Text-Point Correlation

Affordance detection presents intricate challenges and has a wide range of robotic applications. Previous works have faced limitations such as the complexities of 3D object shapes, the wide range of potential affordances on real-world objects, and the lack of open-vocabulary support for affordance understanding. In this paper, we introduce a new open-vocabulary affordance detection method in 3D point clouds, leveraging knowledge distillation and text-point correlation. Our approach employs pre-trained 3D models through knowledge distillation to enhance feature extraction and semantic understanding in 3D point clouds. We further introduce a new text-point correlation method to learn the semantic links between point cloud features and open-vocabulary labels. The intensive experiments show that our approach outperforms previous works and adapts to new affordance labels and unseen objects. Notably, our method achieves the improvement of 7.96% mIOU score compared to the baselines.
