Accurate prediction of agent motion trajectories is crucial for autonomous driving, contributing to the reduction of collision risks in human-vehicle interactions and ensuring ample response time for other traffic participants. Current research predominantly focuses on traditional deep learning methods, including convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and recurrent neural networks (RNNs). These methods leverage relative distances to forecast the motion trajectories of a single class of agents. However, in complex traffic scenarios, the motion patterns of various types of traffic participants exhibit inherent randomness and uncertainty. Relying solely on relative distances may not adequately capture the nuanced interaction patterns between different classes of road users. In this paper, we propose a novel multi-class trajectory prediction method named the social force embedded mixed graph convolutional network (SFEM-GCN). The primary goal is to extract social interactions among agents more accurately. SFEM-GCN comprises three graph topologies: the semantic graph (SG), position graph (PG), and velocity graph (VG). These graphs encode various of social force relationships among different classes of agents in complex scenes. Specifically, SG utilizes one-hot encoding of agent-class information to guide the construction of graph adjacency matrices based on semantic information. PG and VG create adjacency matrices to capture motion interaction relationships between different classes agents. These graph structures are then integrated into a mixed graph, where learning is conducted using a spatio-temporal graph convolutional neural network (ST-GCNN). To further enhance prediction performance, we adopt temporal convolutional networks (TCNs) to generate the predicted trajectory with fewer parameters. Experimental results on publicly available datasets demonstrate that SFEM-GCN surpasses state-of-the-art methods in terms of accuracy and robustness. Copyright © 2024, The Authors.

Quantitative benefits of the digital product passport and data sharing in remanufacturing

As a part of the circular economy – which aims at closing the loop of materials – remanufacturing is getting more and more attention in recent years. With remanufacturing, companies are carrying out a recovery operation of used products with the aim of rebuilding a like-new condition. As various members of the supply chain are involved in this process, and product data needed for optimal operation is often missing, remanufacturing processes can become uncertain and hard to optimize. The goal of a new European Commission initiative, the digital product passport (DPP), is to facilitate information exchange between stakeholders, in order to reduce uncertainties. DPP, assigned to a product, could contain information about e.g., its origin, composition, repair and dismantling possibilities. In the paper, the essence of DPP is introduced, and a case study is presented to show the qualitative benefits of the increased amount of information about the product. A discrete event-based simulation model of three real production lines that are (re)manufacturing cylinder heads is presented. Experiments are also conducted, where quantitative benefits of using DPP are highlighted, such as decreasing unnecessary production time, increasing ratio of remanufactured parts and increasing output.

E-business offers to economic agents the opportunity to increase the efficiency of their activity, promote and offer their products and services on a large and diversified market. Often a single service, separately, does not meet all the needs of various categories and groups of customers. In such a situation, service composition can provide more technical, commercial, informational facilities than each separate component service can offer. There are many web-based frameworks used for e-business, but still with limitations. The paper presents a Services Composition Framework and a wise algorithm for e-business models, based on REST and SOAP web services. It is intended to be used for the development of e-business models, comprising stock market exchange, e-commerce, e-banking, etc. The customers can access the framework services, through Smartphones, on mobile and wireless communication channels. Within a Quality-of-Service performance analysis of the e-business Service Composition Framework, the response time and throughput for multiuser access simultaneous requests were evaluated. A stock market exchange service is considered, as an e-business service example, while Bucharest Stock Exchange information is the digital content source for data transactions.

Cancer-associated biomarker genes play an indispensable role in the intricate tapestry of cancer development and manifestation. The expression of biomarkers in different types of tumor cells has beneficial implications for shedding light on the development of various cancers, guiding clinical diagnosis, and treatment. Microarray technology enables the expression levels of thousands of genes in samples to be sequenced simultaneously. However, sparse and high-dimensional microarray data present a formidable challenge in identifying biomarker genes. This study presents EREF-NSGA2, a novel method for cancer biomarker selection from microarray data, employing a hybrid gene selection approach. Firstly, the combination of the wrapper and embedded gene selection methods is proposed to filter the microarray data, which efficiently decreases the search space of the algorithm. After that, the improved NSGA-II algorithm is used to search the genes subset obtained from the previous step to reach the optimal subset of cancer biomarker genes. The proposed EREF-NSGA2 is compared with other reported methods on six cancer benchmark gene expression datasets. A detailed biological analysis is performed to analyze the relationship between the selected genes and the cancer data sets they belong to. To summarize, EREF-NSGA2 proves its effectiveness in selecting a feature subset comprising the fewest genes while maintaining the highest classification accuracy.

In the mining process of coal, oil, and natural gas, there are often a large number of toxic, hazardous and explosive gases, which pose a greater safety hazard. These gases usually exist in the form of mixtures. Accurately identifying the composition of the mixed gas is of great significance to the prevention of safety accidents. In order to improve the accuracy of the component recognition of the mixed gas, this paper proposes a mixed gas component recognition algorithm based on the combination of principal component analysis (PCA) and k-nearest neighbor algorithm (KNN). PCA is used to extract the characteristics of the sensor array signal to obtain the characteristic value of the gas, and then KNN is used to realize the recognition of the gas type. The results show that the recognition rate of the feature quantity after dimensionality reduction as input is higher than that before dimensionality reduction. Finally, PCA and KNN algorithm and PCA and support vector machine (SVM) algorithm are compared for the recognition rate of mixed gas. Experimental results show that the proposed method has a recognition rate of 96.88% for mixed gas components. © 2021 IEEE.

This paper presents an experimental study that compares the performance of four selected metaheuristic algorithms for optimizing a time delay system model. Time delay system models are complex and challenging to optimize due to their inherent characteristics, such as non-linearity, multi-modality, and constraints. The study includes an explanation of the choice and core functionality of the selected algorithms, which are both baseline and state-of-the-art variants of self-organizing migrating algorithm (SOMA), state-of-the-art variant from the Success-History-based Adaptive Differential Evolution family of algorithms, with emphasis on diverse search (DISH algorithm), and Covariance Matrix Adaptation Evolution Strategy (CMA-ES) algorithm. The hyperparameters of the metaheuristic algorithms were set using the iRace automatic algorithm configuration framework. The paper emphasizes the importance of metaheuristic algorithms in control engineering for time-delay systems to develop more effective and efficient control strategies and precise model identifications. The experimental results highlight the effectiveness of the state-of-the-art algorithms with specific adaptive mechanisms like population organization process, diverse search and adaptation mechanisms ensuring a gradual transition from exploration to exploitation. Overall, this study contributes to understanding the challenges and advantages of using metaheuristic algorithms in control engineering for time delay systems. The results provide valuable insights into the performance of modern metaheuristic algorithms and can help guide the selection of appropriate adaptive mechanisms of metaheuristics.

Gases in the real environment always exist in the form of mixtures, and effective identification of gas types to reduce the occurrence of safety incidents has become an important direction in the field of gas analysis research. This paper proposes a mixed gas identification method based on PCA and PSO-LSSVM. This method uses principal component analysis (PCA) to reduce the dimensionality of the sensor array output signal, and uses the Relief algorithm to select data. The particle swarm algorithm is used to iteratively optimize the relevant parameters in the least squares support vector machine model, and the PSO-LSSVM model is constructed to qualitatively analyze the composition of the mixed gas. This article uses a public data set of mixed gases of ethylene, methane and carbon monoxide to conduct experiments. The experimental results show that the method used in this paper can effectively identify the type of mixed gas, and the recognition accuracy rate reaches 91.67%. The method proposed in this paper can provide a research foundation for the follow-up analysis of the mixed gas concentration. © 2021 IEEE.

Research in mobile robotics is growing into applications for difficult-to-access environments, such as in rescue and transport missions. Furthermore, autonomous vehicles can perform data collection in complex approach areas. Therefore, the study of hybrid unmanned vehicles is relevant for several areas, since these vehicles can act in different domains. The developed vehicle, called Hydrone, is designed in a quadrotor-type structure and equipped with a set of aerial and underwater propellers, which are fixed and independent between them. In this sense, this work presents the mathematical modeling of an unmanned hybrid vehicle, which can navigate underwater and aerial environments. Furthermore, the modeling considers the ground effect due to the influence on the vehicle’s trajectory change and the dynamics of the transition zone between water-air and air-water. These dynamics are important to evaluate the controller’s performance. Numerical simulations consider both transitions (water-air and air-water) and they are performed to discuss the influence of acting forces on the vehicle stability and position-tracking performance using a classical control system. © 2024, The Authors. Exploring Token-Level Augmentation in Vision Transformer for Semi-Supervised Semantic Segmentation

Semi-supervised semantic segmentation has witnessed remarkable advancements in recent years. However, existing algorithms are based on convolutional neural networks and directly applying them to Vision Transformers poses certain limitations due to conceptual disparities. To this end, we propose TokenMix, a data augmentation technique specifically designed for semi-supervised semantic segmentation with Vision Transformers. TokenMix aligns well with the global attention mechanism by mixing images at the token level, enhancing learning capability for contextual information among image patches. We further incorporate image augmentation and feature augmentation to promote the diversity of augmentation. Moreover, to enhance consistency regularization, we propose a dual-branch framework where each branch applies image and feature augmentation to the input image. We conduct extensive experiments across multiple benchmark datasets, including Pascal VOC 2012, Cityscapes, and COCO. Results suggest that the proposed method outperforms state-of-the-art algorithms with notably observed accuracy improvement, especially under limited fine annotations. Copyright © 2025, The Authors.
