The today's determination of residual power of nuclear fuel in containers bases on differential equations, which describe the creation and the destruction of nuclides in the fuel. The Nuclear Regulatory of Slovak Republic requires the verification of present methodology alternatively. The new methodology and achieved results in determination of residual power of spent nuclear fuel by temperature measuring of the container are described in this article. The solution bases on modeling and simulation: The container without fuel was heated by electrical resistant spirals with known electrical power, which simulates the residual power of the transported nuclear fuel. The temperature of defined points of the container's surface and in environment was measured. The measured data were used for the design of the thermic mathematical model of the container. This model can be backwards used for the determination of the power of transported fuel in real container's operation. © 2010 IEEE.

This study presents the experience of the Department of applied Medical Sciences (AMS) - Riyadh Community College - King Saud University in its way to achieve the international accreditation standards to ensure quality. The study is based on a three years experience (2008-2010). The following will be clarified, the list of criteria adopted by AMS to ensure quality and the procedures adopted by AMS to apply accreditation standards to ensure quality of *** study followed the iterative descriptive approach in analyzing the topics. The results show the procedures how the standards were applied to ensure the quality of outputs by meeting the requirements in all aspects, national and international, especially of the internationally recognized organization Council on Occupational Education COE, by which the AMS was then accredited in June 2010. A four year development strategic plan is set for the department to ensure consistent quality and improvement standards. By reviewing the literature of former experiences of Arab and international bodies for accreditation and quality assurance, the study concluded a list of accreditation criteria and indicators of quality assurance, as well as indicators to ensure the quality of the university environment. The achieved number of accreditation and quality assurance standards are presented from both national and international organizations and were found to be: 25 accreditation standards leading to 245 indicators, and 41 indicators for QA, and 29 indicators for the QA of the university *** study recommended the need to activate the academic accreditation and assessment of academic programs periodically internally and externally. Furthermore, similar departments of applied medical sciences should adopt the presented accreditation and quality assurance principles. In addition those departments are asked to put a strategic plan that meets their needs and goals. © 2010 IEEE.

The article provides the general overview and base proposal of solution in the area of controlling the IT resources within the company. It points out some common deficits of integrating systems and running data transfers. Lack of functionality in some large systems is supplemented by using interim database and proposed SQL processing prior to data loads. Interim database is also used for storing the import result status and log functionality.

Main goal of this paper is the proposal of modified university ontology as a part of University data warehouse. The existing ontology does not include all the required concepts and information that are necessary in the evaluation process. In a first step, university ontology is needed to define the base classes that become entities and their associations. After design phase and verification of class diagrams that present our proposed ontology, the mapping into the Data Warehouse multidimensional Star Schema is presented. The most valuable contribution (after implementation phase) will be the possibility to online evaluate the study achievements of students either individually or globally for a departments and faculties according to various parameters, which will undoubtedly increase the quality of pedagogical process. And it should decrease student failure rates. © 2010 IEEE.

Damped One-Mode Vibration Model State and Parameter Estimation via Pre-Filtered Moving Horizon Observer

The estimation of parameters and states is one of the core data-processing algorithms used for the monitoring and control of continuum or structured mechatronical systems (e.g., flexible robotic arms and cantilevers). The measurements taken from the sensors combined with an appropriate model can filter the states and extract information about vibration dynamics parameters such as damping and spring constants. This paper presents a method based on the application of a Moving Horizon Observer (MHO) for state and parameter estimation of a lightly-damped vibrating system. A numerical experiment on a single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) system is performed to demonstrate the method on noisy measurements and to compare the MHO with the benchmark Extended Kalman Filter (EKF). Test scenarios show that the MHO appears to be more robust with respect to modeling errors.

The classical approaches in the adaptive control of Classical Mechanical Systems as the “Adaptive Inverse Dynamics Controller (AIDC)” or the “Adaptive Slotine-Li Controller (ASLC)”, as well as several implementations of the idea of the “Model Reference Adaptive Control (MRAC)” have the common feature that they are designed by the use of Lyapunov's 2 nd (“direct”) method that normally applies a quadratic Lyapunov function constructed of the tracking error and further additional terms. Though in the lack of unknown external disturbances this approach normally guarantees global asymptotic stability, it requires the use of complicated, slow, non-optimal tuning process with high computational burden. Furthermore, unknown external perturbations or the presence of not modeled, dynamically coupled subsystems can completely fob this sophisticated tuning. Recently an alternative problem tackling, the application of “Robust Fixed Point Transformations (RFPT)” were recommended for fully driven Classical Mechanical systems. This approach applies strongly saturated, multiplicative nonlinear terms causing a kind of “deformation” of the input of the available imprecise system model. Instead parameter tuning it operates with Cauchy sequences that are convergent only within a local basin of attraction. This technique can well compensate the simultaneous effects of modeling errors and unknown external disturbances. At first time, in this paper, as a completion, a convergence stabilizing tuning process is recommended and applied for underactuated Classical Mechanical systems. The conclusions of the paper are illustrated by simulation results.

The objective of the discrete-time modeling tools is twofold. First, they give an insight into the basic ideas of discrete-time modeling of dc-dc converters for university students and interested power electronics specialists. Second, as it is being presented below, the interactive calculation tools facilitate the fast and simple model-development in WEB browser after entering the basic circuit and load parameters. This feature can especially be useful for the practicing design engineers, since without long calculations with matrix functions the linearized discrete-time system model is immediately and automatically developed in both mathematical form (state-space equations and transfer functions in the Z domain) and also in graphical form (pole-zero map and bode plot). © 2010 IEEE.

In this paper, the authors propose and investigate a FEM assisted position and speed observer for brushless d.c. PM motor drive sensorless control, based on the line-to-line PM flux linkage estimation. The line-to-line PM flux may be estimated using measured currents and line-toline voltages. The zero-crossing of the line-to-line PM flux linkage occurs right in the middle of two commutation points. The time period from one commutation point to zero-crossing is equal with the time period from zero-crossing to the next commutation point, at constant or slowly varying speed. This is used as a basis for the position and speed observer. For performance applications, in the present paper, the position between commutation points is obtained by comparing the estimated line-to-line PM flux with a look-up table, which contains the position versus FEM calculated line-to-line PM flux. A simulation model and experimental results are shown, demonstrating the reliability of FEM assisted position and speed observer for BLDC PM motor. © 2010 IEEE.
