Multi-object detection and tracking is one of the most significant tasks in computer vision, which has been widely applied in various fields, such as biomedicine, automatic driving, and video surveillance. In our project, we aim to investigate the flight behavior of different small refuse-derived fuel particles (e.g., plastic, wood, paper, etc.) with sizes around 5 to 30 mm, which are blown into a combustion chamber (rotary kiln) via a lance, by detecting and tracking the particles. By utilizing a calibrated light-field camera, both 2D gray value images and 3D information, including the depth of the scene, are available for investigation. To obtain particle trajectories, accurate temporal localization of the particles is necessary. Thus, we perform an approach combining a 2D detection method and a 3D clustering method for precise detection of the particles at first. Subsequently, the temporal 2D particle localizations are associated into tracklets based on the Kalman filter state estimator and the global nearest neighbor algorithm. Owing to the wrong and incomplete tracklets caused by several inaccurate detections, we present a post-processing method to enhance the tracking performance in the paper. Finally, the optimized 2D particle trajectories are converted into 3D trajectories, and these obtained 3D particle trajectories are analyzed by a polynomial regression for further analysis of the particle flight behavior. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

A Lightweight Framework for Semantic Segmentation of Biomedical Images

We introduce a lightweight framework for semantic segmentation that utilizes structured classifiers as an alternative to deep learning methods. Biomedical data is known for being scarce and difficult to label. However, this framework provides a lightweight, easy-to-apply, and fast-to-train approach that can be adapted to changes in image material though efficient retraining. Moreover, the framework is able to adapt to various input sizes making it robust against changes in resolution and is not tied to specialized hardware, which allows efficient application on standard laptops or desktops without GPUs. We benchmark two distinct models, a single structured classifier and an ensemble of structured classifiers, against a U-Net, evaluating overall performance and training speed. The framework is versatile and can be applied to multi-class semantic segmentation. Our study shows that the proposed framework can effectively compete with established deep learning methods on diverse datasets in terms of performance while reducing training time immensely. © 2023 the author(s), published by Walter de Gruyter Berlin/Boston.

The future of power systems belongs to renewables. And to integrate them, the expansion of the electricity grids is undoubtedly necessary. Furthermore, power systems cannot operate without reserves and flexibilities. For these to be efficient, system-serving, and economical, holistic concepts are needed. This paper describes the grid booster concept and presents the major barriers to a large-scale implementation in electric power systems. A proposal for enhancing economic viability and multi-applicability is presented through the discussion of a hybrid grid booster concept. © 2024 IEEE.

Differential flatness has been defined in the literature for continuous time dynamical systems and for discrete time systems. We define flatness of automata from the perspective of behavioral systems theory, and synthesize a flatness definition for hybrid automata. These new definitions allow for feedforward trajectory generation for flat hybrid automata. Additionally, we provide necessary and sufficient conditions of hybrid automaton flatness for different types of continuous state constraints and switching conditions, and how to compute whether a hybrid automaton is flat. We illustrate feedforward trajectory generation based on our findings for a robotic manipulator example. © 2024 IEEE.

Bridge monitoring using displacement, strain, acceleration or rotation measurements during normal operation can be a good supplement to conventional manual bridge inspections. In order to detect damage from the measured signal, features must be extracted from the signal that are primarily damage-sensitive. In recent years, features based on the influence lines have been increasingly investigated. The influence line represents the simplified signal that can be measured with a sensor at a fixed position when a single vehicle crosses the bridge. In this paper, we present the new feature normalised integrated influence lines (niil). We show that niil is sensitive to damage, independent of vehicle geometry, velocity, sampling rate, deviation from ideal lane and robust against noise using the analytical bending beam and strain data from a real bridge that has been successively damaged. niil can be calculated based on the curvature, rotation or displacement influence lines. © 2024 The Author(s).

Today, we are experiencing exponential growth in distributed energy sources and storage systems, such as Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), which participate in the day-ahead energy market. Moreover, the need for energy market coupling to ensure social welfare maximization and grid security makes the Security-Constrained Unit Commitment (SCUC) problem more challenging due to the increasing problem size. This work proposes a novel approach for solving the SCUC problem in a distributed manner by decomposing the grid into multiple areas connected by tie-lines. The solution leverages the Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM) to solve the problem efficiently. The proposed Spatially Decomposed SCUC method significantly reduces the computational burden arising from the combinatorial nature of the problem. The speed-up and optimality of the proposed method is validated on the IEEE 118-bus and RTE 6468-bus systems. © 2024 IEEE.

Laser-scanning confocal microscopy of the human cornea acquires in vivo images of corneal tissues with cellular resolution, which offers diagnostic potential for a variety of diseases. However, involuntary fixational eye movements induce motion artefacts that pose a challenge for accurate morphometric analysis and particularly for preceding image data fusion steps. Different image registration algorithms promise to eliminate such artefacts, but objective, quantitative evaluation of the registration results is difficult because of the lack of ground truth data. Simulation approaches offer a possibility to close this gap. Existing open-source software for the simulation of fixational eye movements is currently limited to creating drift movement. The present contribution proposes complementary models for microsaccade and tremor components to provide complete simulated fixational eye movement paths. In addition, it reports results from an extensive examination of different model parameter combinations. It is shown that the microsaccade model is capable of reproducing intermicrosaccade intervals that closely resemble experimental data. A software implementation is provided as open-source Python modules. © 2024 The Author(s), published by De Gruyter.

Dissolved ozone sensing in water is crucial for a variety of applications, including water treatment, food processing, and medical therapies, as ozone is widely used as an oxidising agent in these processes. Furthermore, dissolved ozone sensing in blood is important for medical therapies. We present a novel dissolved ozone sensor for measurement in water, based on commercially available screen-printed electrodes covered with different porous membranes made of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and non porous membranes made of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). With PTFE, a root mean squared error (RMSE), which is the difference between the novel sensor and the reference spectrometer, of 3.62 mg l-1 can be achieved, while with PDMS a RMSE of 6.34 mg l-1 is obtained. Also, we investigated the measurement of dissolved ozone in blood with membrane-free and electrolyte-free boron-doped diamond (BDD) electrodes. The proposed dissolved ozone sensors offer a promising solution for inexpensive monitoring of dissolved ozone concentrations in water and blood with a compact design. © 2023 IEEE.

An important point for the widespread dissemination of FAIR-data is the lowest possible entry barrier for preparing and providing data to other scientists according to the FAIR criteria. If scientists have to manually extract, transform and annotate the data according to the FAIR criteria and then export it to make it available to the public, this requires a significant investment of time that does not primarily reward the scientist who prepares and provides the data. The Energy Lab at KIT is running a large cluster of an Influx database management system with energy related time series data being stored in a variety of individual databases over periods of up to 15 years. In order to increase the willingness to make data available to the scientific public, we develop a tool that greatly supports and automates the publication and annotation process of time series data stored in Influx databases. This paper introduces a multiobjective optimization strategy for minimizing both energy pulsation and power dissipation in modular multilevel converters (MMCs). The occurrence of energy pulsation and power dissipation in MMCs has the negative potential to lead to a reduction in efficiency, to an increase in thermal stress, and to reliability issues. A Pareto front analysis shows that simultaneous improvement of both objectives is not possible. Analytical function optimization provides an exact solution for the case where only energy dissipation is considered. By optimizing the tradeoffs between minimizing energy pulsation and reducing power losses, this work offers a comprehensive solution to enhance the performance of MMCs. © 2024 IEEE.
