Local versus global stability in dynamical systems with consecutive Hopf bifurcations

Quantifying the stability of an equilibrium is central in the theory of dynamical systems as well as in engineering and control. A comprehensive picture must include the response to both small and large perturbations, leading to the concepts of local (linear) and global stability. Here, we show how systems displaying Hopf bifurcations show contrarian results for these two aspects of stability: Global stability is large close to the point where the system loses its stability altogether. We demonstrate this effect for an elementary model system, an anharmonic oscillator, and a realistic model of power system dynamics with delayed control. Detailed investigations of the bifurcation explain the seeming paradox in terms of the location of the attractors relative to the equilibrium.

This paper covers the initial research and analysis of the EEG signal for the purpose of designing a neural interface for identification of the mental state. Such neural interface can be beneficial in various fields of automation and industry and can also potentially serve as a safety feature for safety critical processes. In the first section of this paper we discuss the performed experiment and also the technical means for the EEG data acquisition. In following chapter, we are describing the data itself and we are also performing the basic data analysis as well as the correlation identification. In modern industrial enterprises, safety always comes first. Regardless of whether it is safety against weather conditions such as fires, floods, or it is securing the building from the intrusion of unwanted person. With these sensors, these services can also provide IoT smart security devices. In the connected world of Industry 4.0, there are way too many opportunities to take control of such devices, and so with a help of a cyber attack, computer attackers would be able, in two ways, to make the device impossible to operate. The first way is to manipulate the device, disable alarm sensors, and steal the data. The second way is to misuse the device for attacking another in a reflected way. The article illustrates the possibility of how the safety sensors can be disabled, and how this safety device can be used to attack another IoT device - the thermostat. Finally, the case study demonstrates inability of IoT-based automation and control device to send alarm notifications when a threat is detected by its sensors during the DDoS attacks. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2020.

Distributed AC Optimal Power Flow: A Scalable Solution for Large-Scale Problems

This paper introduces a novel distributed optimization framework for large-scale AC Optimal Power Flow (OPF) problems, offering both theoretical convergence guarantees and rapid convergence in practice. By integrating smoothing techniques and the Schur complement, the proposed approach addresses the scalability challenges and reduces communication overhead in distributed AC OPF. Additionally, optimal network decomposition enables efficient parallel processing under the single program multiple data (SPMD) paradigm. Extensive simulations on large-scale benchmarks across various operating scenarios indicate that the proposed framework is 2 to 5 times faster than the state-of-the-art centralized solver IPOPT on modest hardware. This paves the way for more scalable and efficient distributed optimization in future power system applications. Copyright © 2025, The Authors. All rights reserved.

In this paper we present a novel rule-based, language independent method for determining lexical entailment relations using semantic representations built from Wiktionary definitions. Combined with a simple WordNet-based method our system achieves top scores on the English and Italian datasets of the Semeval-2020 task "Predicting Multilingual and Cross-lingual (graded) Lexical Entailment" (Glavaš et al., 2020). ALADIN-α - An open-source MATLAB toolbox for distributed non-convex optimization

This paper introduces an open-source software for distributed and decentralized non-convex optimization named ALADIN-α. ALADIN-α is a MATLAB implementation of tailored variants of the Augmented Lagrangian Alternating Direction Inexact Newton (ALADIN) algorithm. Its user interface is convenient for rapid prototyping of non-convex distributed optimization algorithms. An improved version of the recently proposed bi-level variant of ALADIN is included enabling decentralized non-convex optimization with reduced information exchange. A collection of examples from different applications fields including chemical engineering, robotics, and power systems underpins the potential of ALADIN-α. Copyright © 2020, The Authors. HighlightsIntroducing the Concept of Grades of automation for Shunting OperationsIn Europe political decisions have been made to shift freight traffic from roads to railways, triggering substantial efforts to digitize and automate processes in the rail freight domain. As currently, only automation taxonomies for driving in rail networks exist, this paper provides a taxonomy for operations in so-called marshaling yards. Marshaling yards are critical nodes in the rail freight network, where the wagons of arriving trains are separated and are distributed to outgoing trains. Using the Design Science Research Cycles of Hevner to ensure a transparent procedure, this work develops Grades of automation for Shunting Operations. The key outcome is a systematic classification together with a pictorial representation of these Grades of automation, providing an overview of basic Shunting Operations and their functional realizations. This taxonomy facilitates a comparison of automation levels across different marshaling yards, aiding rail freight undertakings in planning efficient transport routes within the rail freight network. © 2024, The Authors. This paper introduces tools for the automatic detection of "hidden" behind-the-meter solar generation in case where there is no monitoring or connection agreement contract with the system operator. The objective is to reach the highest precision while discriminating the nodes with and without solar generation. The proposed methods are based on exogeneous information (smart meter and temperature data) and artificial intelligence techniques consisting of neural networks as well as analytical classification algorithms. A wide range of models differing in size, architecture and number of parameters has been investigated, and the best performing ones are presented in the article. The first method involves time series classification (TSC), and the second involves time series forecasting (TSF). Open-access consumption data were used for the training of the neural networks. The implemented solutions were tested across all the nodes of the simulated electrical grid and the sensitivity of the tools was analyzed with regard to the level of PV penetration. One of the proposed tools is able to detect up to 100% of new PV installation, depending on the exogenous conditions.

An understanding of how input parameter uncertainty in the numerical simulation of physical models leads to simulation output uncertainty is a challenging task. Common methods for quantifying output uncertainty, such as performing a grid or random search over the model input space, are computationally intractable for a large number of input parameters represented by a high-dimensional input space. It is, therefore, generally unclear as to whether a numerical simulation can reproduce a particular outcome (e.g., a set of experimental results) with a plausible set of model input parameters. Here, we present a method for efficiently searching the input space using Bayesian optimization to minimize the difference between the simulation output and a set of experimental results. Our method allows explicit evaluation of the probability that the simulation can reproduce the measured experimental results in the region of input space defined by the uncertainty in each input parameter. We apply this method to the simulation of charge-carrier dynamics in the perovskite semiconductor methyl-ammonium lead iodide (MAPbI3), which has attracted attention as a light harvesting material in solar cells. From our analysis, we conclude that the formation of large polarons, quasiparticles created by the coupling of excess electrons or holes with ionic vibrations, cannot explain the experimentally observed temperature dependence of electron mobility.

In this paper, a complete design of discrete low-pass, high-pass, band-pass, band-stop filters based on an analog model is performed. This approach combines the advantages of designing continuous-time filters, which are real electrical circuits, whit digital filters in the form of a program running in an infinite loop. Unlike the standard approach of a filter design directly in the discrete-time, in this case, the filter is designed as an analog and subsequently is transformed into a digital form while maintaining all the properties.
