The gradient of a scalar function is frequently used in various areas of mathematics. In informatics it can be used, for example, in the process of learning procedure of many control systems. The key observation is that gradient, if it is a non-zero vector, is a vector in the direction of greatest rate of the scalar function. In this contribution we show a method how to determine the direction(s) even if the gradient is zero vector. We show that this can be done with the knowledge which students have it their stage of study.

This work addresses the solution to the problem of active vibration suppression of a cantilever beam using piezoelectric actuation. For this purpose, we are taking advantage of the effectiveness of the positive position feedback control strategy (PPF) in order to control first mode vibrations of the analyzed beam. This control technique is well-known in the literature as a modal control method for vibration attenuation. The PPF controller accomplishes its best performance if tuned properly to the characteristics of the structure to be controlled. According to this we are going to realize the modal analysis of the cantilever beam utilizing the finite element method in Ansys to determine the structural frequency corresponding to the first mode, which is used as PPF controller frequency. On the other hand, we shall obtain the state-space representation of the cantilever beam using the subspace identification method in frequency domain applying the fast fourier transformation (FFT). Furthermore, we will simulate the discrete-time PPF controller using Matlab/Simulink. Lastly, the simulink designed discrete-time PPF controller will be tested using an xPC Target real-time system.

The spread of Web 2.0 has caused user-generated content explosion. Users can tag resources in order to describe and organize them. Tag clouds are visually depicted tags in order to facilitate browsing among numerous tags and resources. The goal of our paper is to improve tag clouds with vocabulary refinement and enhanced reference counts. Namely, three novel algorithms have been proposed to correct spelling and clerical errors, contract tags, and improve reference counts. The provided algorithms have been validated and verified on real-world tag clouds of a thesis portal.

This paper considers the estimation of states and parameters of a Single-Degree-of-Freedom (SDOF) vibration model in nanopositioning system based on a nonlinear Moving Horizon Observer (MHO). The MHO is experimentally tested and verified on measured data. The information about the displacement and speed together with the system parameters and unmodeled force disturbance is estimated through the Sequential Quadratic Programming (SQP) optimization procedure. The MHO provided superior performance in comparison with the benchmark method Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) in terms of faster convergence.

The increasing demands on quality of power, emissions and overall performance of combustion engines lay new goals for the hardware and the software development of control systems. High-performance embedded controllers open the possibilities for application of numerical methods to solve the problems of modeling and control of combustion engines. Algorithms for estimation of state and parameters are essential components of many advanced control, monitoring and signal processing engine applications. A widely applicable estimator is given by the Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) which defines a finite memory recursive algorithm suited for real-time implementation, where only the last measurement is used to update the state estimate, based on the past history being approximately summarized by the a priori estimate of the state and the error covariance matrix estimate. The proposed EKF uses an augmented air-path state-space model to estimate unmeasurable mass flow quantities. The EKF algorithm based on the augmented state-space model considerably reduces the modeling errors compared to the open loop estimator simulation and compared to the EKF without the augmentation which is demonstrated on a standard production Diesel engine data. The experimental validation of the observed state quantities is performed against the measured pressures and turbocharger speed data. The estimated mass flow quantities are indirectly validated through the air compressor flow that is directly validated against air mass flow sensor data. Two two-sensor setups are considered in this study. In the first experiment the intake manifold pressure and the turbocharger speed is used. The second experiment uses the intake manifold pressure and the exhaust manifold pressure as the measurement information for the EKF. The second experiment gives more precise mass flow estimate in term of less bias on the estimates, but more variance due to the high frequency exhaust manifold pressure variations caused by the

The development of a Hardware-in-the-Loop (HiL) simulation platform for precision induction motor (IM) servo drive development, evaluation and testing of various control architectures is described in this paper. The platform uses industrial graded hardware components, i.e. Mitsubishi IGBT inverter, 3-phase induction motor and incremental optical encoder as well as various measurement sensors. Its main computational core is implemented using an xPC Target platform which enables rapid validation, prototyping and deployment of various control algorithms via Matlab & Simulink.

This paper presents human-robot communication for a monitoring support system in an Intelligent Space. An Intelligent Space (iSpace) is a space in which many intelligent devices are installed to observe the user's environment. In this paper, we apply the iSpace observation function to a monitoring system used for maintaining the safety of elderly persons receiving home-care support. In addition, we use a mobile robot as a tool to deliver monitoring results to care assistants. We focus on an ethological approach for designing robot behaviors for human-robot communication. The implementation of these robot behaviors based on an ethological approach, and the results of an experiment conducted to evaluate these behaviors, are then presented.
