The Web is an unprecedented enabler for publishing, using and exchanging information at global scale. Virtually any topic is covered by an amazing diversity of opinions, view- points, mind sets and backgrounds. The research project RENDER works on methods and techniques to leverage diversity as a crucial source of innovation and creativity, and designs novel algorithms that exploits diversity for ranking, aggregating and presenting Web content. Essential in this respect is a knowledge model that makes accessible - cognitively to human users as well as computationally to the machine - the diversity in content. In this paper, we present a glossary of relevant terms that serves as baseline to the specification of the Knowledge Diversity Model. Copyright is held by the author/owner(s).

In this paper, nonlinear identification of a Liquid-saturated Steam Heat Exchanger using Wavelet based State Dependent Parameter (WSDP) models is presented. This is a highly nonlinear, non-minimum phase process, and often operated under varying conditions. Here, in order to characterize such dynamics, 2-D WSDP model is used. The simulation results demonstrate the merit of the identified model.

This paper presents the application of Wavelet based State Dependent Parameter (WSDP) models to the identification of a Continuous Stirred-Tank Reactor (CSTR). Here, in order to characterize the process dynamics which is highly nonlinear and multi-variable dependent, 2-D WSDP model is used. The simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness and advantages of the identified model.

Thanks to development of information technology, the so-called virtual software environments offer wide possibilities for the estimation of time-space dynamical characteristics of energy systems, including modeling, control and design of distributed parameter systems. Based on these advances, we present a novel approach to control energy systems as lumped-input and distributed-parameter-output systems. An adaptive-predictive controller is deployed to control temperature fields to ensure optimal conditions for the desulphurization process in a coal-burning fluidized bed furnace, demonstrating the potential of the proposed methodology.

Digital libraries are providing an increasing amount of data, which is normally structured in a classical way by documents and described by metadata as keywords. The data, even in scientific systems such as digital libraries and virtual research environments, will contain a great amount of noise or information unnecessary for our personal interests. Although there has been a lot of progress in the field of information retrieval, search techniques and other content finding methods, there is still much to be done in the field of information retrieval based on user behavior. This paper presents an approach deployed in the Humboldt Digital Library (HDL) to facilitate the retrieval of relevant information to the users of the system, making recommendations of paragraphs based on their profile and the behavior of other users who share similar profiles. The Humboldt digital library represents an innovative system of open access to the legacy of Alexander Von Humboldt in a digital form on the Internet (***). It contributes to the key question, how to present interconnected data in a proper form using information technologies.

Robust and sensitive tools to characterise local structure are essential for investigations of granular or particulate matter. Often local structure metrics derived from the bond network are used for this purpose, in particular Steinhardt's bond-orientational order parameters ql. Here we discuss an alternative method, based on the robust characterisation of the shape of the particles' Voronoi cells, by Minkowski tensors and derived anisotropy measures. We have successfully applied these metrics to quantify structural changes and the onset of crystallisation in random sphere packs. Here we specifically discuss the expectation values of these metrics for simple crystalline unimodal packings of spheres, consisting of single spheres on the points of a Bravais lattice. These data provide an important reference for the discussion of anisotropy values of disordered structures that are typically of relevance in granular systems. This analysis demonstrates that, at least for sufficiently high packing fractions above φ > 0.61, crystalline sphere packs exist whose Voronoi cells are more anisotropic with respect to a volumetric moment tensor than the average value of Voronoi cell anisotropy in random sphere packs.

In service science, the design of services' value propositions is a major concern. A service's value proposition needs to best possibly meet the customers' requirements and preferences. We envision an approach of validating value propositions regarding stakeholder preferences. The approach proposes the modeling of value propositions using Service Feature Modeling. Stakeholder preferences are then collected based on the created model. Finally, the model and the collected preferences are unitedly evaluated and optimizations are identified under consideration of potential adaptation expenses.
