For the observation of ultra high-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) by the detection of their coherent radio emission an FPGA based trigger and radio frequency interference (RFI) filter was developed. Using radio detection, the electromagnetic part of an air shower in the atmosphere may be studied in detail, thus providing information complementary to that obtained by water Cherenkov detectors which are predominantly sensitive to the muonic content of an air shower at ground. For an extensive radio detector array, due to the limited communication data rate, a sophisticated self trigger is necessary. However, radio signals in the frequency range of 30-80 MHz are significantly contaminated by RFI and human made distortions. The digitized signals are converted from the time to frequency domain by a FFT procedure, then a deconvolution and RFI-filters are applied to correct the frequency response and to suppress the RFI. Finally the filtered data is transformed back into the time domain by an iFFT, also generating an envelope as a base for the final self-trigger. To avoid leakage effect and to create an overlap of successive data blocks, trapezoidal windowing is applied with internal overclocking. The algorithms for two polarization channels have been successfully implemented in a single FPGA and tested in a prototype board with 180 MHz sampling rate, 16-bit dynamic range, and 12-bit resolution. © 2006 IEEE.

Cost and scalability benefits of Cloud storage services are apparent. However, selecting a single storage service provider limits availability and scalability to the selected provider and may further cause a vendor lock-in effect. In this paper, we present MetaStorage, a federated Cloud storage system that can integrate diverse Cloud storage providers. MetaStorage is a highly available and scalable distributed hash table that replicates data on top of diverse storage services. MetaStorage reuses mechanisms from Amazon's Dynamo for cross-provider replication and hence introduces a novel approach to manage consistency-latency tradeoffs by extending the traditional quorum (N,R,W) configurations to an (N_P,R,W) scheme that includes different providers as an additional dimension. With MetaStorage, new means to control consistency-latency tradeoffs are introduced.

Consumption of business processes provided in form of Web sites have become a part of our daily life for attending our personal and business needs. In order to obtain the best solution for a particular task, users often combine several Web sites. However, currently the composition of Web sites, coordination of the execution of such Web sites compositions is done completely manually. In this paper, we present an approach that allows users to automatically compose generic solutions by combining appropriate Web sites and invoke the generic solutions with appropriate parameters whenever required, thus relieving them from a lot of manual coordination effort. We show how Web sites and their compositions can be formalized as processes, how the formal descriptions of Web sites can be automatically composed to obtain generic solutions and how such generic solution can be executed inside a common Web browser with automatic flow of data among different parties despite heterogeneous data.

Mobile information systems (MIS) are finding their way into private and business every-day activities. There are also increased attempts to establish MIS for on-site activities in industrial facilities. Industrial environments, however, place significantly higher demands on mobile user interfaces than office or home environments. Common interaction styles are often unsuitable for this domain. MIS comprising specialized configurations like wearable systems might overcome current limitations. Wearable systems make it possible to arrange system components in the immediate environment of the user's body in order to create an ergonomic and intuitive user interface. However, the use of distributed, body-worn user interfaces, and in particular separation of input and output devices, might increase the workload for the user. This study examines the extent to which the separation of input and output devices affects the workload for wearable MIS. Three interaction styles in two different configurations are investigated with four different measures to determine the workload covering both objective and subjective indicators. This investigation shows that there is no significant increase of workload in general. However, the measurement of the heart rate variability revealed subtle but significant differences between the two configurations, particularly for one interaction style. These findings indicate that physiological measures can provide more detailed and subtle information about additional workload and its source than other measures. © 2011 ACM.

Initiatives of making government data open are continuously gaining interest recently. While this presents immense benefits for increasing transparency, the problem is that the data are frequently offered in heterogeneous formats, missing clear semantics that clarify what the data describe. The data are displayed in ways, which are not always clearly understandable to a broad range of user communities that need to make informed decisions. We address these problems and propose an overall approach, in which raw statistical data independently gathered from the different government institutions are formally and semantically represented, based on an ontology that we present in this paper. We further introduce the approach deployed in publishing these data in alignment with Linked Data principles, as well as present the methods implemented to query single or combined dataset and visualize the results in understandable ways. The introduced approach enables data integration, leading to vast opportunities for information exchange, analysis on combined datasets, simplicity to create mashups, and exploration of innovative ways to use these data creatively.

Code search in an industrial environment is driven by the programmers wish to scan huge source code repositories with high precision in a very short time. Given a challenging scenario of a huge software repository, the question for an efficient code search backend is relevant. This paper discusses the question of an appropriate data storage model for a structured code search engine applied in an industrial development scenario, where a search on large software repositories is common. To investigate this, a search engine approach with integrated Abstract Syntax Trees is adapted. Using the capabilities of a hybrid in-memory database, we stored a big amount of structured data obtained from the source code repository into column-, row-, and a hybrid store layout and performed a set of typical queries using an SQL interface on them. The results have shown the superiority of the column-oriented approach for the investigated scenario. © 2011 IEEE.

The simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness and advantages of the identified model.
