The objective of the discrete-time modeling tools is twofold. First, they give an insight into the basic ideas of discrete-time modeling of dc-dc converters for university students and interested power electronics specialists. Second, as it is being presented below, the interactive calculation tools facilitate the fast and simple model development in WEB browser after entering the basic circuit and load parameters. This feature can especially be useful for the practicing design engineers, since without long calculations with matrix functions the linearized discrete-time system model is immediately and automatically developed in both mathematical form (state-space equations and transfer functions in the Z domain) and also in graphical form (pole-zero map and bode plot).

This paper describes a new offline FEM assisted position and speed observer, for brushless dc (BLDC) PM motor drive sensorless control, based on the line-to-line PM flux linkage estimation. The zero-crossing of the line-to-line PM flux linkage occurs right in the middle of two commutation points, which is used as a basis for the position and speed observer. For performance applications, the position between commutation points is obtained by comparing the estimated line-to-line PM flux linkage with the FEM calculated line-to-line PM flux linkage. Even if the proposed observer relies on the fundamental model of the machine, a safe starting strategy under heavy load torque, called I-f control, is used, with seamless transition to the proposed sensorless control. The I-f starting method allows low-speed sensorless control, without knowing the initial position, and without machine parameters identification. Digital simulations and experimental results are shown, demonstrating the reliability of the FEM assisted position and speed observer for BLDC PM motor sensorless control operation.

A novel position and speed estimator for single phase permanent magnet brushless d.c. (PMBLDC) motor drives, based on flux integration and prior knowledge of Ψ PM (θ) is proposed here and an adequate correction algorithm is adopted in order to increase the robustness to noise and to reduce the sensitivity to accuracy of flux linkage estimation. A speed and current close loop control is employed based on the Hall signal and the motor is controlled at different speeds in order to validate the proposed estimation algorithm with satisfying results. The position correction effect is analyzed by examination of improvements in both position error and speed pulsations.

In this paper, the authors propose and investigate a FEM assisted position and speed observer for brushless d.c. PM motor drive sensorless control, based on the line-to-line PM flux linkage estimation. The line-to-line PM flux may be estimated using measured currents and line-to-line voltages. The zero-crossing of the line-to-line PM flux linkage occurs right in the middle of two commutation points. The time period from one commutation point to zero-crossing is equal with the time period from zero-crossing to the next commutation point, at constant or slowly varying speed. This is used as a basis for the position and speed observer. For performance applications, in the present paper, the position between commutation points is obtained by comparing the estimated line-to-line PM flux with a look-up table, which contains the position versus FEM calculated line-to-line PM flux. A simulation model and experimental results are shown, demonstrating the reliability of FEM assisted position and speed observer for BLDC PM motor.

This paper introduces a virtual arthroscopy training simulator as a beneficial tool for partial meniscectomy procedure. The modeling methods of virtual environment, haptic interface establishment, and the system integration are described in detail. With the combination of interactive visual and haptic feedback, the simulator is designed to aid surgeons in getting acquainted with the arthroscopic view of the knee joint anatomy, the handling of basic instruments, and the operating procedures of the partial meniscectomy. ©2009 ACA.

This paper suggests a new stability analysis approach dedicated to a class of fuzzy control systems controlling multi input-multi output (MIMO) nonlinear processes by means of Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy logic controllers. The approach is based on LaSalle's global invariant set theorem, and an original stability theorem offers sufficient stability conditions. The applicability and efficiency of the theoretical results are illustrated by a MIMO case study dealing with the fuzzy control of a spherical three tank system.

This paper reports on AnnieWAY, an autonomous vehicle that is capable of driving through urban scenarios and that has successfully entered the finals of the 2007 DARPA Urban Challenge competition. After describing the main challenges imposed and the major hardware components, we outline the underlying software structure and focus on selected algorithms. Environmental perception mainly relies on a recent laser scanner which delivers both range and reflectivity measurements. While range measurements are used to provide 3D scene geometry, measuring reflectivity allows for robust lane marker detection. Mission and maneuver planning is conducted using a concurrent hierarchical state machine that generates behavior in accordance with California traffic laws. We conclude with a report of the results achieved during the competition. © 2009 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

In the paper, an uncertainty analysis and simulation of a robust control of temperature fields of the casting mould in the benchmark casting plant are presented. Temperature fields are supposed as distributed parameter systems with dynamic models in the form of lumped-input/distributed-output system. For this representation, uncertainty of the controlled system was considered and robust control synthesis with internal model control structure was designed. Simulation of the robust control of the temperature field in the casting mould was carried out using the Distributed Parameter Systems Blockset for MATLAB & Simulink - Third-party MathWorks product. © 2009 IFAC.

The design paradigm service-orientation combines proven design elements from previous approaches with design elements from recent technology evolution. However, little work has investigated so far the complexity associated with service-oriented systems. This paper proposes a simulation-based approach to assess the influence of inherent system properties on overall system complexity. In addition, this work provides results of experiments in a simulated environment to support our approach.
