Dynamic properties of a hybrid system are analyzed that has been developed to generate electric energy by utilizing alternative, renewable and waste energies. The solution is based on a system that consists of a high-speed turbine, coupled to a three-phase permanent magnet synchronous generator, an AC/AC converter and a supervisory control unit. The function of the system is to utilize the energy content of some working medium by a special turbine that converts the energy content of the working medium into electric energy by the generator and the AC/AC converter. The alternative renewable energy sources may include solar energy (direct solar steam system or solar energy with heat exchanger), geothermal energy (with or without heat exchanger) and energy obtained from biomass. Various waste energy sources can also be utilized by applying the system such as the energy that can be obtained during the process of pressure reduction in steam, gas and fluid networks. The electric power generated by the system can be fed back to the utility mains or it can be used in stand-alone mode to supply a selected group of loads. The paper analyses a novel control strategy and principle of the system to ensure optimum performance and economy by using a special solution for ensuring the power equilibrium in the combined mechanical-electric drive.

The analysis, design aspects and numerical results of a current controlled three-phase space vector modulated (SVM) voltage source converter (VSC) are presented. The aim of the current controller of VSC is to track the balanced three-phase sinusoidal reference currents. The current controller includes a complex saturation function in order to avoid overmodulation in the SVM. Due to this strong nonlinearity the study leads to rather unexpected system states. An approximate Poincare" map is derived using stroboscopic sampling with the modulation period of the SVM. Selecting eigenvalues of the system linearized around the desired fixed point is not sufficient to the proper operation. Other stable fixed points or limit cycles can appear. Chaotic states also can develop in the unstable region of the desired fixed point. The main objectives arc to develop the tools for describing the nonlinear behavior, for designing the digital PI controller and to present numerical results.

The analysis and numerical results of a current controlled three-phase Space Vector Modulated (SVM) Voltage Source Converter (VSC) are presented. The aim of the current controller of VSC is to track the sinusoidal reference currents in each phase. The current controller includes a saturation function in order to avoid overmodulation in the SVM. Due to this strong nonlinearity the study leads to rather unexpected system states. An approximate Poincare map is derived using stroboscopic sampling with the modulation period of the SVM. The paper reports that saddle-nodes and coexisting chaotic and spiral attractors appear at some parameter settings.

The current paper offers insight into the asymmetrical operation and control of dual channel resonant DC-DC power converters. The common feature of the configurations presented here is that all of them have two channels. Asymmetrical control can often be necessary if energy exchange is required between the two channels (e.g. maintaining symmetrical output voltages in spite of the asymmetrical input voltages and/or loads). Three independent control variables offer adequate possibilities for the control to intervene in both continuous (CCM) and discontinuous (DCM) conduction modes.

The stability analysis of the buck member of a dual channel resonant DC-DC converter family is reported. The study is confined to the symmetrical continuous current mode. The output voltage of the converter is controlled by a feedback loop applying constant frequency PWM. The dynamic analysis applies to stability criterion the positions of the characteristic multipliers of the Jacobian matrix belonging to the Poincare map function defined around the fixed point located in the Poincare plane where the trajectory of the variable structure, piecewise linear, nonlinear system pierces through the plane. The study reveals that the process loses its stability as a result of varying the loop gain.

The paper describes and compares two output voltage feedback control methods of a buck type, special, resonant DC-DC converter. The first control method make the output voltage change either by varying the switching frequency or the amount of energy delivered by one current pulse to the output circuitry or both. The second method applies PWM for controlling the output voltage. The results of simulation study illustrate the dynamic properties of the two feedback control loops and reveal the inherent nonlinearity of the control object. © 2000 IEEE.

The paper reports first time subharmonic, quasiperiodic and chaotic operation in one member of a double channel resonant DC-DC power converter family. The converters of this family can operate both in symmetrical and in asymmetrical mode. The study presented in the paper is restricted to the buck configuration in symmetrical operation. A brief summary of the configuration and basic operation of the converter is followed by the study of some nonlinear phenomena of the output voltage control loop of the resonant buck converter. The nonlinearity is caused by the dependence of the turn-on time of the controlled switches on a system state variable. The rather strange behavior exhibited by the feedback controlled converter is studied by simulation. Two kinds of route lead to the chaotic operation: a period doubling scenario and a quasiperiodic one, caused by a Hopf bifurcation. The paper presents a number of simulations results of this behavior in form of time functions, bifurcation diagrams, Poincare/spl acute/ maps and state-space trajectories.
